Edwards: We're Playing to Keep Boss in Job
Wednesday, 10th Oct 2012 06:00

Ipswich captain Carlos Edwards has laid his cards firmly on the table to own up: “We are playing to keep the manager in his job.”

Successive away draws at Barnsley and Brighton may have ended a depressing run of three defeats on the trot but Town are still second from bottom of the table with Saturday’s defeat to Championship leaders Cardiff continuing speculation regarding Paul Jewell’s future.

Edwards admitted: “It’s all down to the players once we cross the white line and whatever team the manager picks we must go out and give 100 per cent.

“We can only do what we can when we are out on the pitch to help his cause and make the owner and the board of directors give him a bit of extra time. We can only do so much to try to make sure his job is safe.

“He will accept his fate and even if I would love to see him in the job for some time to come I am just one player.”

Edwards said the manager’s position is not proving a distraction and added: “It is not a big topic among the players and they tend to just get on with their jobs.

“We hear the whispers but the last thing we want to do is talk about whether or not the manager is going to be sacked. We don’t want players in a corner of the dressing room speculating about what is going to happen.

“We come into training every day and yes, we do have our concerns, but we just keep them to ourselves. Once the games come round and the manager picks his team we are all in it together.

“We are a good group of lads and when we lost three in a row recently we did not think it was the end of the world. We knew it would get better and we came back with two good away draws.”

Seeing as we've got 7 loanees & I think 9 out of contract next summer, why the hell should they be bothered who's in charge?!

This situation cannot go on..we need a fresh start & a proper "plan"..I only hope that Bolton don't beat us to Billy Davies.

Scotland's body language on Saturday was one that demonstrated all's not well with the striker at the Club now. He looked totally disinterested, and in some ways I can sympathise with him. He has after all just been replaced by a loanee (who is unlikely to stay) DJ .

Gibbs..itfc, sorry cant agree with you when you say we can longer compete financially with other teams and the sooner people accept the better. the facts are we have never been able to compete with the bigger spenders, we tried it once and nearly went out of business. ITFC has been built on a successful youth set up, a successful scouting set up, successful coaching/ tactics and hard work all under the guidance of good managers. Very little itfc success has come about because we had money to spend, historically we have achieved more with less.

What people need to realise, and it pains me to say it, the restoration of itfc is bridge too far for Paul Jewell.I like him and want him to do well, its not happening is it? It has been right to give him time and i have agreed with it. As frank Sinatra and my way blasts out at portman road, " and now, the end is and so i face my final curtain", very appropriate i feel.

I am big enough if wrong to eat lashings of humble pie and will do so gladly. Will You? COYB

Very true Dissboyitfc, much of what we had and much of what we need is missing at present, sadly i dont see it being put right under present regime.

It has been mentioned by a few people on TWTD that Carlos playing in the right back spot is a waste. Must say i agree, very talented footballer, he could have played in the centre or out wide, lots of pace and quick feet, also has a good shot on him. Four years at right back what a waste. It just proves the point we are making which is the last two managers have been a complete and utter waste of everybodys time and money.

If the team is playing to keep the Manager in a job, then start doing it on the pitch.
Carlos as Captain/'Manager on the pitch', time for some verbal lashings to your team mates...now is not the time to be laid back 'I could sleep on water'...Demand Loach to give up Twitter and command the 18 yard area to allow the defence more freedom to attack. Give the Manager a view as a Captain...we can see it as supporters, at the moment the team has no belief that it can give a team a hiding. The Captain can DEMAND an extra 10% from the team as long as he is doing his job. You are doing your job well as right back/winger...as Captain?

Yep why Carlos isn't playing right midfield is beyond me! you could see he was good at taking players on and getting crosses in but to play him as a right back? (THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON NOW 3 SEASONS).
Also why should they be playing for PJ now? How about giving 100% every week whether for the manager, the fans and for yourselves?

Everything said on here tonight is the truth and the facts. A decent right back would release Edwards to where he is most dangerous. Our goals for says it all.

I work with a Bolton season ticket holder who says that tactically Coyle was poor and just could not turn it round when the going got tough.

Billy Davies would do a great job, there is an interesting interview by him on the internet about his analysis of the forest job.

Jewell got found out at Derby and he is just not up to it. This season is no bad patch, this is carrying on from the last 2 months of last season.

And if not Billy Davies, Gary Smith at Stevenage is doing a great job.

We need to get someone who can make us compete again in this league and regenerate the fans interest.

...... honestly I cannot see who would want to come in to try and sort this mess out - so many loan players on varying length of contracts, contracts coming to an end, etc; etc; etc. A real mess to sort !!

Certainly not a task for the faint hearted - therefore I think the only option is to leave Jewell in situ and see if he can turn it around, or not, as the evidence strongly indicates.

Whoever came in would need some assurance in terms of a plan / future intention / or indeed interest, from the Owner and Ceo - but would any of that be forthcoming ????

Weird, absolutely weird, situation this Club has dived progressively into - and now finds itself well and truly embedded.

We are sinking faster than a tonne of bricks. Can't think that many Town fans feel a connection with the club and also don't believe that many (if any) new town fans have been won over in the past 4 years. Really fearing the future of this club.

Can't believe that ME and SC are doing nothing - both must be related to Emperor Nero.

Totally agree pabloc...Davies has got a great track record..been successful at "every" club, not just a couple..took Preston up,Derby up & got Forest into the play-offs twice on virtually no budget...just imagine what he could do with our lot...he's the obvious choice imho, sadly our owner's dithering will continue to set us back years and years unless he pulls his head out of PJ's backside.

I wonder why Carlos has even raised issue of manager's job? If it was to a direct question ok, otherwise does he know something we don't?

Apparently there is a big all-staff meeting at ITFC tomorrow - could be just about which fixtures and fittings to paint next though(?)

PS- no thanks to Coyle (or Butcher, Burley etc)
