Jewell Confident No New Man Lined Up
Monday, 22nd Oct 2012 13:42

Blues boss Paul Jewell says owner Marcus Evans has dismissed claims that owner Marcus Evans is lining up former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley as his replacement. The Town manager spoke to Evans yesterday with the owner continuing to give him his support.

Speaking at this morning’s pre-match press conference, Jewell said: “I spoke with Marcus yesterday and he wants me to stay.

“I’ve got a fantastic and open relationship with him and if he wanted to sound out another manager, he wouldn’t have to do it behind my back, he’d tell me, it’s as simple as that. And having spoken to him yesterday [he isn’t].”

The Town boss says Evans wanted to speak to him after he had said he was considering his position in the wake of the 2-1 defeat at Hull City: “He wanted to talk to me, he’d seen the comments and read them and wanted to know what I was thinking.

“It’s great for me to have the support of the owner. It would be nice if we could get a few results and get a smile on everyone’s face.

“But you’re not going to stop rumours and if read the players or I believed everything everyone told me, I don’t sleep at night anyway, but I definitely wouldn’t sleep if I was worrying about who is going to take my job. If Marcus wants to make a change, he’s going to make a change.”

Jewell, who cut a much more upbeat figure this morning, admits to having made the weekend comments as a reaction to the defeat at Hull which stretched Town’s winless run to 10: “It’s been a tough time lately and I was just so fed up after the game and disappointed with our performance.

“I have to go and do press [after the game] and sometimes you say things in the heat of the moment that when you get home you probably regret.

“I said them, so I’m not going to run away from them, that’s the way I felt at that moment in time. But [since then I have] spoken with Marcus at length and have had a lot of support from football — managers and even players who have played here, I had a lovely text from Lee Bowyer on Saturday night.”

He says he talked to the squad at training yesterday: “I spoke with the staff and the players. You know when you’ve lost the dressing room and I definitely haven’t done that.

“Not every player at this club will want me as manager but not every player at Manchester United would want Sir Alex as manager - there are always people who are not happy.

“The large majority of players have come to me and have said ‘I hope you stay’. I just want to try and ensure that in the short-term we get a few results and hopefully we can move on. I do believe we’re in a false position given the team we’ve got.”

He says he doesn’t want to quit and that the situation is very different to the one at Pride Park when he left tomorrow’s opponents Derby County: “I don’t want to resign. I don’t want to walk out. We’re in a battle at the moment.

“I left Derby County and people think I walked out, but I didn’t really. The owners had told me that if they could afford to sack me they would do, so I said they wouldn’t need to worry about the money, if you’ve lost faith in me, I’ll go.

“That’s not the case here, the owner hasn’t lost faith in me, I’m going to keep going. I know I can’t keep going without winning matches, I understand that.

“But in the last four matches we’ve taken the lead in all of those games and we could be sat here with 10 more points, although it would have been fortuitous on Saturday. But the games against Cardiff, Brighton and Barnsley we could easily have won.”

...... this Club has to be left now to sink to it's deserved and rightful level - no amount of ambition or concern from certain Supporters (myself included) will make one iota of difference to the people in charge of this 'horrendous affair' as it is.

Two wins and we will be on our way up the table - 2 massive games, but I really believe we have good players who if they really believe in their manager can produce what is needed - I predict a dramatic hard fought win tomorrow night - COYB !!!

Im firmly in the camp that Jewell, Clegg etc should not recieve personal abuse, however im judging the current manager on results and how the team and squad have improved since he came in. I think its fair to say nothing has improved at all no core of a team to speak of, no one to build a team around. He is paid a very large salary to produce a team that can compete for promotion from the Championship he has been backed with money last season, the dressing room has got a revolving door he's had s omany in and out and still no improvement. So i conclude hes not the right man. Every ITFC fan wants to see their team succeed. So dont refer to people as cretins just because they dont agree with your veiw theres a fine line between passion boiling over into anger, i can remember Sir Bobby refering to us fans as Zombies perhaps he had a point after all. Fans pay good money to watch Town so they are entitled to voice their discontent. I will add dont stoop to abuse him we are all better than that.

Brilliant. Just heard Adrian Durham on Talksport feature Marcus Evans on his 'Heads Gone' feature for sticking with Paul Jewell.
We are becoming a laughing stock.
Everyone else in football can see Jewell should be sacked so please Mr Evans show some leadership and make some positive decisions for this club.
Enough is indeed enough.

I firmly believe that Paul Jewell will turn things round and as we climb the table some of his fiercest critics will deny that they ever had a bad word to say about him.

There is no denying that we are in a bit of a mess (understatement) but swapping managers is always tricky when in our position during the season. Any new manager will want to bring in his own players, meaning a complete overhaul again. We have been there and done that already!!

Without intending to sit on the fence, I'm also aware that keeping a manager when results have been so poor is also a problem. On the flip side I also firmly believe it is up to the players to take responsibility. After all it is them that try and score one end, and not concede the other - not the manager!

I know we don't always (ever really) see eye-to-eye, but I can understand your frustration. I think all supporters feel the same to varying degrees. All I will say to that, as I've said countless times before and firmly stand by, is that the team needs our support.

If ever there was a time for the fans to show their true colours and get behind their side, it is now. Can we do that........ Very debatable (which is rather sad)

@Truthhurts i agree with your comments but do really believe a noisy Portman road will turn the team around alone. We need good hardworking hungry players and a Manager who lays down a plan and tactics and motivates them. I find it hard to get behind players who seem at best disinterested. Dare i say it keane wasent a good manager but i wouldnt mind having 11 of him on the pitch.

That's about the only confidence PJ has had in the last few months! and it's about a successor to him, I think it's going to take a bit more than the fans to get behind the team it's down to the players too to get us out of this mess and it really makes you think if do these loanee's have the passion and pride of the club in their hearts to do it?
Like to think the crowd can give us an extra man with the support but unfortunately PR hasn't been a noisy upbeat stadium in years, VERY SAD DAYS INDEED.

Who gives a sh1t what the morons on talksport say. Anyone at the bottom of a league is in crisis try would sack managers every week on that basis. They want reactions to make the show work, worry about our own problems not what other people think.

Bobblehat - you're obviously content to see OUR Club the 'laughing stock of Football' - I AM NOT. That's one huge difference between us - and looking at some other posts, you're not alone - constantly condoning FAILURE.
Hope you stay happy with your colleagues.

No I don't think a noisy Portman Road is the one and only solution, but I certainly think it would help. If people seriously think otherwise then we may as well all give up, it simply staggers me...

I appreciate it's a classic cliche. But how many times have we heard people in sport talking about fans as the 12th man. Believe me I want the team and/or management to be as successful as the next person, but I really do struggle with some of the points of view that are voiced (yes we all are entilted to opinions blah blah blah).

I seriously think there is a section of fans that actually WANT us to fail just so they can stand up and say 'I told you so'. How pathetic is that!?

Cue countless negative posts....

h32 - no, im not content with our current situation , but you and others need a reality check. We are not the laughing stock of football. Do you really think other teams fans throughout the country meet up and say "ere, what about Ipswich arent they funny" .
Our football team are in a bad patch We will come out of it hopefully sooner , rather than later, and i will be there throughout it all so please stop suggesting that you are a better supporter than me.
You're not , you just have a different view on things than i do .
Your opinion and fact are NOT the same thing, contrary to your beliefs.

Seasider - good post - problem is not many would want, or indeed could, understand the content, and correctness of your post. A crucial fact that.

Finally, finally............ a sensible post!!

It's blatantly clear that this forum is simply an area is which to slag off everything Town based. Very few posts are actually realistic and sensible.

I can accept critical postings if they have solid background. Most don't.

situation looks very grim but m evans is obviously going to stick with paul jewell and constantly witch hunting pj will not help. i see some are linking us with curbishley again he is old hat hasnt been in football for 5 years we would be worse off than now we need our overpaid players to finally start paying back the fans pj and club. some of chopras performances have been a joke he should get 25 a season no problem as for the rest well i have played against more commited players on a sunday morning. they should all be ashamed no we now need consistent team some luck and to get behind the team on tuesday night even though they dont deserve it i think evans will give pj until xmas whether we like it or not

Bobblehat - time you learnt how to read a post correctly - I have NEVER said I am a 'better supporter' than you. Read correctly first BEFORE sprouting off.

And I gave you credit enough to realise I was referring to 'learned' people within Football - not Supporters - because if they are all like you, and certain others, they wouldn't look beyond their own Club anyway.

BRAVO - 'you will be there'. Whatever ......

Dozzells_Bobblehat Well said. As if other teams' supporters care about what ITFC are doing! Can't imagine any of them actually laughing. They probably laugh if they read what is going on on this website. The 'supporters' on here are a laughing stock. Any supporter 'up the road' would lol at some of the in fighting on here.

Get a grip folks. What will be, will be and nothing on here will change anything.

Let's get behind the team tomorrow, even if there are only 14000 of us.

Keane destroyed our club not PJ who is a good man. When all your players leave or what amounts to the same thing refuse to sign new contracts there's a lot of rebuilding to do. Of course we've had a worse time now than under Keane. He was leaching off all the good work that had been done by better men than him over the years while he took it apart. Who is going to do a better job than PJ?

"not many would want, or indeed could, understand the content" - and thats not in the slightest bit arrogant !!!!

The underlying problem at Ipswich goes far beyond the manager , of course he is tacticly enept and his substitutions are very poor to say the least . But look to the man who appointed him and keeps backing him !!! Marcus Evens never comes out and speaks to the fans , we know he is a private person but if he wants the fans to buy into what he is doing with our club he should show his face instead of hiding behind the useless Clegg who in my opinion has know knowledge of running anything let alone a football club !!! The biggest laugh of the season was whwn a new couch was broughtg in who has nothing to do with football but is a rowing expert !!! Whats that all about ????? Bring back Sheepshanks , i prefer being in debt than having these muppets running my club !!!
