Jewell Confident No New Man Lined Up
Monday, 22nd Oct 2012 13:42

Blues boss Paul Jewell says owner Marcus Evans has dismissed claims that owner Marcus Evans is lining up former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley as his replacement. The Town manager spoke to Evans yesterday with the owner continuing to give him his support.

Speaking at this morning’s pre-match press conference, Jewell said: “I spoke with Marcus yesterday and he wants me to stay.

“I’ve got a fantastic and open relationship with him and if he wanted to sound out another manager, he wouldn’t have to do it behind my back, he’d tell me, it’s as simple as that. And having spoken to him yesterday [he isn’t].”

The Town boss says Evans wanted to speak to him after he had said he was considering his position in the wake of the 2-1 defeat at Hull City: “He wanted to talk to me, he’d seen the comments and read them and wanted to know what I was thinking.

“It’s great for me to have the support of the owner. It would be nice if we could get a few results and get a smile on everyone’s face.

“But you’re not going to stop rumours and if read the players or I believed everything everyone told me, I don’t sleep at night anyway, but I definitely wouldn’t sleep if I was worrying about who is going to take my job. If Marcus wants to make a change, he’s going to make a change.”

Jewell, who cut a much more upbeat figure this morning, admits to having made the weekend comments as a reaction to the defeat at Hull which stretched Town’s winless run to 10: “It’s been a tough time lately and I was just so fed up after the game and disappointed with our performance.

“I have to go and do press [after the game] and sometimes you say things in the heat of the moment that when you get home you probably regret.

“I said them, so I’m not going to run away from them, that’s the way I felt at that moment in time. But [since then I have] spoken with Marcus at length and have had a lot of support from football — managers and even players who have played here, I had a lovely text from Lee Bowyer on Saturday night.”

He says he talked to the squad at training yesterday: “I spoke with the staff and the players. You know when you’ve lost the dressing room and I definitely haven’t done that.

“Not every player at this club will want me as manager but not every player at Manchester United would want Sir Alex as manager - there are always people who are not happy.

“The large majority of players have come to me and have said ‘I hope you stay’. I just want to try and ensure that in the short-term we get a few results and hopefully we can move on. I do believe we’re in a false position given the team we’ve got.”

He says he doesn’t want to quit and that the situation is very different to the one at Pride Park when he left tomorrow’s opponents Derby County: “I don’t want to resign. I don’t want to walk out. We’re in a battle at the moment.

“I left Derby County and people think I walked out, but I didn’t really. The owners had told me that if they could afford to sack me they would do, so I said they wouldn’t need to worry about the money, if you’ve lost faith in me, I’ll go.

“That’s not the case here, the owner hasn’t lost faith in me, I’m going to keep going. I know I can’t keep going without winning matches, I understand that.

“But in the last four matches we’ve taken the lead in all of those games and we could be sat here with 10 more points, although it would have been fortuitous on Saturday. But the games against Cardiff, Brighton and Barnsley we could easily have won.”

I read an earlier Post referring to Sir bobbys Slow start very correct and fans did call for his head thank god John Cobbold thought different. However is there anyone out there really believes that Paul Jewell will go on to emulate the Late great Sir Bobby, he will always be rembered as one of the great managers in football not only in English football but across Europe and the world always repected where ever he went. Paul Jewell is not or never will be in the same class. Wrong choice to start with and seem to be confirming that by the week. Sir Bobbys first season we finished 18th second season 19th third season 13th Fourth season 4th the rest is history look at the teams he had to clear players out and bring in new and produce players from with in. Jewell is making wholesale changes each week if he requires time, surely so does the players all the Jewell lovers on here can you not see this guy is not taking the team forward.

Jewell im sorry but you have no dignity and no class.
You know youve put this club in its worst position for 50 years and you know you cant turn it around.
You also know us fans have lost faith in you and that we will go down if yoi stay in charge.
By not resigning you are proving all those people wrong who keep saying how much of a good guy you are.
Take a long hard look in the mirror, accept its over and do the decent thing.

I think tomorrow night is going to be horrible whatever the outcome.Three points? Jewell stays. One point? Jewell stays. No points? Jewell stays. See you there!

"I've got a fantastic and open relationship with him"

Am I the only one thinking PJ is up to his old tricks over his car bonnet? At least it explains why he has still got a job......

Isn't life so simple. I hope certain 'well informed and educated' fans on here apply for the top job at Old Trafford once Fergie eventually goes. Your talents are wasted!!

There is a hint of sarcasm in my tone for those too simple to grasp it

I wish i could be there tomorrow, the chants of You don,t know what you are doing, will ring out loud and clear, all aimed at PJ, C,mon mate just go and give our beloved club a fighting chance, you clearly have lost the support of every town fan and the majority of the dressing room, just go with dignity instead of lining your pocket!

As someone who is surrounded by canaries I have had very mixed feelings over the last few years. There have been some very good lessons learnt up here around managerial merry-go-rounds and the reliance on loan players. Nigel Worthington was hounded out by the fans and the club did nothing except spiral downwards through the use of loan players after the appointment of Glenn Roeder (who was admired by many at the start and then upset the fan base by telling them they knew nothing about football) . Roeder left replaced by a fans favourite (and ours after his memorable mis-kick at PR!!) in Bryan Gunn who inherited the loanees brought to the club by Roeder with the consequence that things went from bad to worse and relegation to League 1.
Change the colours to blue and white and the venue to Portman Road but things are much the same, we've had a practice with Roy Keane and now we have all the loanees. Sadly I don't know who the "Paul Lambert" will be. I just hope we don't have to go to League One to find him!

aside from everything else am i the only person who thinks its appalling that pj lives in leeds. i didnt know this and had stuck by him but to me it doesnt set good example to players and wont exactly breed commitment upon hearing this fact that tips me toward town needing a fresh approach b davies or m appleton while still time.

@ righty
I'm more annoyed that you implied I was not 'young' than you calling me an idiot. I'm in my prime.

They want a reaction out of you. I really don't think we are a laughing stock. I actually think Evans surprising backing of PJ is refreshing. I wanted him to go after Sat but only of we had someone to take over. Now I want him to win the next two games and answer his critics.

I would say that peoples views and comments regarding PJ are not personal, the attacks and comments by Leeds fans on Friday night aimed at Dave Jones were personal.

People are expressing their views regarding PJ's managerial ability which as supported by facts and data is woeful. We were minutes from going bottom of the league on Saturday, thats how low he has taken us with "his best ever squad".

All of a sudden today people seem to be giving him the symapthy vote, why? He said that he would do what is best for the future of the club. I think he has been selfish and thinking of himself in his decision to stay on.. If there real signs of recovery I could see that but 3 points from the last 27 and conceding an average of 2 goals a game is not a sign of recovery.

The fans of this club who pay their money were here long before Mr Jewell and will be here long after him to. If people want to air their views about his managerial ability, then they are entitled to do so, they care. Jewell has been given a very fair crack of the whip and at any other club would have been given a torrid time along time ago by fans.

It shouldn't be just about a win tomorrow night, its about the rest of the season and his ability to turn it around.

We need a win tomorrow but I think he has had his time and is devoid of ideas and tactical nouse to create a team that will perform week in, week out and compete in this league and we deserve more than that.

Please save protests till after the game.

We desperately need 3 points.

Look I don't want Jewell here as much as the next person, but I also hate seeing Ipswich lose.

As it is always said no one is bigger than the club.

Are people really saing they want us to lose? The those people stay away from tomorrows game please.

The interesting thing for me is that it is Jewell saying he has the owners backing rather than the club itself!! That might be a coincidence but I doubt it.
This farce is damaging the club and may take years to recover from. The sensible thing is for Jewell to be relieved of his duties now before its too late.
Those mentioning Sir Bobby's early years of struggle forget we were a small club in the top division with less at our disposal.
Now we have had large amounts of money compared to many other championship clubs yet look certain to finish in our lowest position since the 1950's. This is due to mismanagement by messers Evans, Clegg, Jewell and Keane.
Changing the manager will not make everything fine but it will arrest the slide which is in danger of going out of control. Doing nothing in the vain hope of a miracle is no longer an option.

So Marcus9, does he go home every night and travel down again every morning or what? If so, I'm not surprised that he never stands up at home games. It must be the only chance he gets to put his feet up for five minutes. Is this really true?

WarkyWonderland - you're right, the sympathy posts are coming to the fore for PJ today from the same posters (well known) - this Club has become such a soft such in terms of what is acceptable for far too many Supporters.

ME doesn't need to ensure this Club is successful on the Pitch - that is off minor consideration / concern to him.
He will be fully aware of that.

We would get the same people supporting the team in the Blue Square League.

Ambition, directive, esteem, credibility - all down the pan - compared with yesteryear.
Keep flying the flag all you satisfied losers - many of us won't though.

Ok - I'm on my own here but I'd like Jewell to stay. I feel we should show him what true supporters we are and that we don't act like other clubs. Didn't we play some lovely football against Cardiff? Taylor looks a great signing but is out at the moment? jet starting to find form?

Just saying...

You are obsessed with the power of ambition.

Blackpool Bolton Birmingham Leicester Wolves Cardiff Palace Leeds Blackburn just off the top of my head will equally believe they should be fighting for promotion to the prem and they have bigger fan bases and are far better locations than we have here. Look I understand ambition I have it in every aspect of my personal life but I also have realism. I'm not a Jewell sympathiser I want the club to do well (I don't mind Jewell though but that's not relevant), what I don't want is our team to be left without a manager in the free fall position we are in now.

Of course Evans cares what what league we are in and what gates are like. Even if his sole motivation was profit.
