Jewell Confident No New Man Lined Up
Monday, 22nd Oct 2012 13:42

Blues boss Paul Jewell says owner Marcus Evans has dismissed claims that owner Marcus Evans is lining up former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley as his replacement. The Town manager spoke to Evans yesterday with the owner continuing to give him his support.

Speaking at this morning’s pre-match press conference, Jewell said: “I spoke with Marcus yesterday and he wants me to stay.

“I’ve got a fantastic and open relationship with him and if he wanted to sound out another manager, he wouldn’t have to do it behind my back, he’d tell me, it’s as simple as that. And having spoken to him yesterday [he isn’t].”

The Town boss says Evans wanted to speak to him after he had said he was considering his position in the wake of the 2-1 defeat at Hull City: “He wanted to talk to me, he’d seen the comments and read them and wanted to know what I was thinking.

“It’s great for me to have the support of the owner. It would be nice if we could get a few results and get a smile on everyone’s face.

“But you’re not going to stop rumours and if read the players or I believed everything everyone told me, I don’t sleep at night anyway, but I definitely wouldn’t sleep if I was worrying about who is going to take my job. If Marcus wants to make a change, he’s going to make a change.”

Jewell, who cut a much more upbeat figure this morning, admits to having made the weekend comments as a reaction to the defeat at Hull which stretched Town’s winless run to 10: “It’s been a tough time lately and I was just so fed up after the game and disappointed with our performance.

“I have to go and do press [after the game] and sometimes you say things in the heat of the moment that when you get home you probably regret.

“I said them, so I’m not going to run away from them, that’s the way I felt at that moment in time. But [since then I have] spoken with Marcus at length and have had a lot of support from football — managers and even players who have played here, I had a lovely text from Lee Bowyer on Saturday night.”

He says he talked to the squad at training yesterday: “I spoke with the staff and the players. You know when you’ve lost the dressing room and I definitely haven’t done that.

“Not every player at this club will want me as manager but not every player at Manchester United would want Sir Alex as manager - there are always people who are not happy.

“The large majority of players have come to me and have said ‘I hope you stay’. I just want to try and ensure that in the short-term we get a few results and hopefully we can move on. I do believe we’re in a false position given the team we’ve got.”

He says he doesn’t want to quit and that the situation is very different to the one at Pride Park when he left tomorrow’s opponents Derby County: “I don’t want to resign. I don’t want to walk out. We’re in a battle at the moment.

“I left Derby County and people think I walked out, but I didn’t really. The owners had told me that if they could afford to sack me they would do, so I said they wouldn’t need to worry about the money, if you’ve lost faith in me, I’ll go.

“That’s not the case here, the owner hasn’t lost faith in me, I’m going to keep going. I know I can’t keep going without winning matches, I understand that.

“But in the last four matches we’ve taken the lead in all of those games and we could be sat here with 10 more points, although it would have been fortuitous on Saturday. But the games against Cardiff, Brighton and Barnsley we could easily have won.”

What gets to me is the longer this downward spiral continues and they dont change the manager the more of a laughing stock we become to the football community.

I'm sorry but we're stuck in a cycle, and I honestly think Curbs would deliver the EXACT same thing all over again. It doesn't make any sense to go from PJ to him, of course they're not the same but it's a too similar appointment imo.

Let's go for someone in League 1 who's young, hungry, carries no expectations, good man-manager, and keeps a cool head.

Keane - too much expectation, worst man-management I've ever seen.
Jim - not cool headed, fits the rest though which is probably why he did better.
PJ - not young, not cool, should be a good man-manager but seems completely incapable of motivating anyone.

Ipswich have always been a stick with their manager club and I say good on us for that... However, if was reading on here that we were playing sublime football and people loved watching it or that we were building from a fabulous base of young players who are going to ignite any minute and take the world by storm then our present situation would be unpleasant but up to a point tolerable.
With some notable exceptions we seem to have a team of Premier league has beens and no set formula. I dont claim to be a tactical genius but with Robson and Burley we always had width and as much as I hated it under RK we were much more direct, looking for Walters who quite frankly in my view has been our best player of the past 5 years (and has now been gone for 3??)
It does seem to me that PJ (and I dont blame him up to a point) is crisis managing, there is no clear philosophy to me about this is my way and we stick to it through thick and thin coming from him. It is for this reason I think he must go. How i really wish that David Sheepshanks hadn't hit the panic button on that Grimsby night and let Mr Burley continued with the footballing philosophy. Had the club not been in the financial 'do-do' then I think he might. We went for a quick fix with BFJ and have never been the same since. Jim did not have the same vision as Burley and RK and PJ, well enough said...
As the user name implies I dont get to millions of games if I lived nearer I would without doubt have a season ticket, so if I am wide of the mark I apologise.... but it seems to me that we need a Southampton and Adkins approach or at the risk of upsetting everyone on here a Budgie/Lambert approach......

Putney Blue and others - he has had lots of time and lots of money ... he still does not know who to pick, cannot coach the players into stopping crosses coming in for fun, does not seemingly know how to change a game.

He HIMSELF said judge me after 10 games. How many have we now had ???? Where are we in the league ??/ how confident are we of this changing any time soon???

He is no Bobby Robson and no Alex Ferguson - maybe he isn't even a Bobby Ferguson but that might be being just a little unfair on PJ

Sometimes i come on here and am thoroughly depressed by the comments , and really do wonder about our fanbase. So it makes a pleasant change to read posts like Sibelius8, karlosfandangal and whoisjimmyjuan's, it has partially restored my faith in common sense.
PJ may well leave the club in the near future and yes that may well be the correct decision but as stated by others some of the personal abuse he receives on here is disgraceful.
As for comments like " he has destroyed our club" , "we are the laughing stock of football" " worst team and manager in our history" then some of you have very short memories or are only about twelve years old. This squad is underachieving undoubtably and may need a new man at the helm but PJ is just a failing football manager and not a criminal so can we have a sense of perspective please.

all you "supporters" calling for protests, banners, staying away etc etc is really going to help the players confidences isn't it. And you talk about Jewells motiovation! God protect us from bar room managers who can write on sheets

"WhoisJimmyJuan": I quite agree that the 60s are totally different from today. You are quite right. I'm also glad that you agree that personal abuse should have no place on this site.

The major problem is that we fans have absolutely no idea what goes on behind the scenes - and why should we know all the details? Do all of us know absolutely everything about even our own place of work?

Thus, for some, frustration over results malingers and festers, resulting in some nasty and odious comments all too often here. These contributions serve their moaning purpose but do not actually help the team win. Better to channel such frustrations as these into cheering the team rather than booing these very lads in blue. If there is nothing to cheer about that is a different matter.....Let us but hope we play well against the Rams. But, for a start, as the teams come onto the pitch and for the first minutes of play, all true fans should be positive and cheer. It may well help us win. (If we lose though - boo - but save it for the end of the match please!)

This is getting repetive now! Its the same story about Evans being behind Jewell under a different headline.

Why is Jewell having to come out and tell us what ME has told him, is Jewell the new press officier as well. No wonder he is struggling to do both jobs. Surely it should be Evans or if not Evans then Clegg who should be telling us whats going on with Jewell. Jewell could be making the whole thing up!

Its whats wrong with our club - no communication from those at board level to the fans. Surely Jewell's time would be better spent preparing the team for tomorrows game than to spend time at an interview telling us second hand news passed down from Evans. Evans that's your job!

I certainly disagree with those being directly abusive to Jewell the person, but to Jewell the manager, I understand why fans question his credibility- and agree. The same applies to the players... if they don't appear to be putting the effort in me expect then I reserve the right to be unhappy.

I appreciate that some supporters don't like to be demonstrative, and they are allowed that right, but please don't dictate how OTHER fans should react. Football is emotive and, provided it is thought through, varying opinions can be valid.

When going to matches we pay a large amount of money hoping to be entertained. If we lose I want to KNOW that the players have put the effort in and that the manager has demonstrated a reasonable technical and tactical aptitude.

If I come away, even after a loss, with ticks in the above boxes I can be rational. unfortunately too often in the last few years I am questioning both instead. I may not see behind the scenes but do pay to see what happens on the pitch and expect a certain level of effort/competence.

An irony above is that 'Greenkingtone' thanks Sibelius (who had coached a more reasoned tone) and then referred to people who he clearly disagrees with as 'cretins'. Common sense doesn't HAVE to mean others agree with your view, but it does require a lower level of personal abuse.

PJ hase'nt got the guts to resign, he is set on draging us into deeper s**t. No matter what happens tomorrow..he is a dead man walking. Do the decent thing RESIGN.

As long as he has had a lovely text from Lee Bowyer thats ok....

Just leave PJ, you were a decent manager about 10 years ago, but absolutely clueless now, no tactical knowledge whatsoever. His comments are just pathetic, just using the same excuses again and again.

airliner added 16:26 - Oct 22
Wake me up from this nightmare. If PJ had any modicum of respect for the club and himself he would walk away now. just shows how some managers beleive their own hype. Obviously marcus Evans really does not care if we are relegated or not.

Michael11 added 16:29 - Oct 22
I think Evans is letting his friendship with Jewell over rule his business judgement which is very dangerous, oh and course the players want you to stay because they can get away with losing every game and blaming it on you!! Just leave now with a bit of dignity before it's too late. P.s don't want Curbishley neither, he only did well at Charlton because he stole all our best players for £5. Terry Butcher please!

RetroBlue added 16:29 - Oct 22
Paul Jewell is an honest individual trying to do his best for this Club. Unfortunately not all of the players can say the same, and certainly not the so called "local" press who will stop at nothing to up the anti against the Club, its owner and its manager.

For PJ's sake , he needs to stay quite now and work with his team to get things right on the pitch.

..and fingers crossed Clegg can also start to do his job more effectively and sign the managers primary targets when he's been given the list of names in future!!
