Clegg: Long List of 34 Names
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 16:27

Chief executive Simon Clegg says Town already have a long list of potential successors to Paul Jewell 34 names long. Clegg was speaking at a press conference after Jewell’s time at Town was ended by mutual consent earlier today.

Clegg said: “There is a process under way at the moment. I’m not going to go into any details on that. We want to appoint a replacement as quickly as possible.

“In the short-term, particularly given where we are in the table at this moment in time, the most important thing is picking up three points on Saturday, which is why I have asked Chris Hutchings to take on the role of caretaker-manager for that game and beyond if necessary.

“Until such time as we appoint a permanent replacement manager, Chris Hutchings will be in charge.“

Former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is widely believed to be the leading candidate to be Jewell’s replacement, but Clegg wouldn’t be drawn on specific candidates: “There are a lot of people out there who are in the frame.

“We have a long list of about 34 names. We’re in the process of whittling that down to a short list and are hoping to get to a position where we can make a formal announcement as soon as possible.

“When you find yourself in a situation like this, first of all we’ve pulled together a list of names ourselves, in terms of the owner, myself and the owner’s advisors, but a number of people have applied. The phone has been red hot since midday today.”

Ex-Crystal Palace boss Dougie Freedman, whose move to Bolton appears to have hit a stumbling block, is also another manager understood to have been approached by the Blues, but again Clegg wouldn’t be drawn: “There is wild speculation out there and a number of names have been mentioned, but you wouldn’t expect me to comment on any one individual.”

Other bosses likely to be linked are the likes of Alex McLeish, Owen Coyle, Billy Davies, Steve Kean and Mick McCarthy, while Clegg says there has been interest from interested parties both from the UK and abroad.

the changing man. yet again you, & many others just using this site to slag off clegg. apart from nething else it will be evans who appoints the new manager just as he did the last 2. clegg, as everyone should know by now is just evans front man.bur no1 interested in that as they just wanna use him as a scapegoat for everything that goes wrong. yes, the last 2 appointments havent worked out, but did any of us think they were bad appointments at the time? we may not all have got the man wed have liked but none of us would have expected what has happened, so why would evans or clegg have known either. do think they shouldnt rush this next appointment to make sure they get the right man. but whoever they appoint we should all get behind him. but i dare say that most of you whose posts ive read on this story, if it not who you want will again come on & slag clegg off.

ALL MORONS PLEASE READ - Ok I fully embrace and support the concept of free speech but will you morons ( you know who you are) please understand that Simon Clegg on his own or Simon Clegg and Marcus Evans together WILL NOT be making the decision on who to appoint as our next manager BY THEMSELVES. As for the posters who recommend that they look on here for inspiration - gawd help us!

What's all this talk of clegg needing to sell the club to intice a new manager.
If any prospective manager needs that then he isn't the right man to come and take charge.
We need a manager who wants this club to become a great one again.
I'm not saying that the last two didn't, but if you believe what the players have said, then the character of our new manager should fall between the lone wolf style of Keane and mr nice Jewell.
I still cannot for the life of me understand how with the 21 months he had in charge that he couldn't sort out the defence, or indeed Keane with the time he had either.
Something fundimental must be wrong at this club.
Every great side has a rock solid back line. as a starting point.
We went from Keane, playing what was essentially four centre backs to having only one recognized cb untill just before the season start.
With the new wage structure in place, I just hope that enough funds are available to sort this problem out.
Unfortunatly we can no longer rely on quality youngstesr coming through the ranks in the near future after what has gone on recently, ie downgrading the Academy and disabling the youth /reserves setup.
Whoever it is we get, please just get us back to playing attractive football with the occassional win., as we wnt be able to run untill we learn to walk properly again.
Hopefully that will save us from the dreaded drop down to the third tier of British football.

I will just say two words to the cretins that want Burley back. Finidi and George

Avram Grant for me.......maybe with a Venus or Mills as assistant - someone to coach the useless so and so's to defend for 95 minutes. Surely every club has defensive coaches on the books....except us I guess.

Grant had Portsmouth performing miracles in a worse position than ours...I have become religious and started praying for all sorts already...worked last night. Lol

Two more words , 'Promotion,' and 'Wembley.'
For the record , I struggle to see why Ferguson isn't favoured more .
He alway's plays attractive football , which we all crave , does a sterling job on a shoestring , has great contacts and he'd probably bring George 'goal of the season' Boyd with him .
Also , if the mountain was to prove to big to climb this Season , Ferguson would be perfect to re-build and get us out of Div 1 .
Also Holloway , Hill and Smith are great shouts , but something tells me that Evans's magnificent panel of advisor's will be lining up the vacancy for another one of their mates .
Let's hope they have the 'Gonads' to give us all a lift and ignore the same old list of mediocrity that is always rolled out when there's a job going .
Cannot see them taking a chance on anyone young and refreshing , but it cannot get any worse can it ?

We may have a list of names, but there are other clubs that may be more appealing, looking for a manager. Given a choice, I'd probablt opt for Palace or Blackburn over us right now.

This is the problem. Having sat on the fence for ages I fully agree that we need a new manager but who? I reckon that pretty much all of the 34 names are people who have failed elsewhere. As for Steve Kean, Alex McLeish and Garry effin' Megson, God help us

i think when Clegg said he has a long list of names he probably meant he has a short list of long names .

In our position it's not the time to go for an up and coming guy . we need someone with a deal of experience , good contacts in the game , a "man manager" and not least passion . Who would go on that list ?

A list of 34 names????Thats a list of all our loan players or is it a list of people that came to Portman Road nd Clegg couldnt agree a contract with like Charlie Austin oh no its the list of people whos contracts have been cancelled by mutual consent over the past two years. And clegg says we need strong management at this time, the joke continues

Two more words for way way.
UEFA CUP
or
Premier league
Or
Fifth place
Or
Good football
Or
Full stadium
Or
Satisfied fans
Or
Totally devoted

Yes he made his mistakes... Didn't Alex ferguson sign massimo taibi, Eric djemba djemba
Roberto Mancini signed Owen Hargreaves. Yes finidi George was an error but was Matty holland, Herman h, Marcus Stewart etc etc.

He probably won't end up back at town but he built a side from a base that got mullered in his first season and turned the club round. It was as I think he has recognised, mr sheepshanks and the board, going too far too quickly on developments and believing that we were impregnable that was the ultimate undoing. Not mr burley.

Hell no to Megson, Hoddle or Cotterill
Maybe to Coyle, McCarthy
Probably to Davies
I know a lot of people keep shouting for an ex town player but just cos people like MIlls and Butcher were legends for us as players doesnt mean they would be as a manager and lets face it neither of them have great managerial records. Having said that i wouldnt mind one of them in a role at the club, maybe to work alongside Evans and Clegg.
By the way all you Clegg haters, did you hear Mills's view on that last night ? Interesting.

Curbs please - Some miss the point, "too long out the game..." - for at least 18 months he COULDN'T take a job while his unfair dismissal case against West Ham went through, which he won. We are bottom of the table ppl, this is NO time to gamble on nutters like Di Canio or Hoddle, or sentiment like Mills, Burley-take-two, etc. Norwich appointed Bryan Gunn on sentiment, next step 3rd tier football!) We NEED someone who knows what they're doing. Curbs came into West Ham when bottom of the Prem and facing mission impossible. he kept them up, winning at Old Trafford to clinch it. Next season they were going well in mid-table when he was betrayed by the Icelandic owners. He left, he was not sacked. Before that he took Charlton from 3rd tier football and left them mid table Prem. Proven. Never failed. CURBS PLEASE, with Holland as no. 2.

Solskaer - turned down Villa, not gonna come here is he...??
Harry - get real...
Billy Davies - club hopping failure
Megson/Kean/Cotterill... don't get me started...
Poyet/Taricco - not bad but won't come...
Yallop - interesting - but won't come....
Mogga - I'd back that, but he won't come...
McCarthy - my realistic no. 2 pick to Curbs, got teams to Prem, couldn't keep them there unlike Curbs.

Passion has been running high for a long while on this site, rightly so. We all have our opinions on the past fiasco that has become us and we all have our opinions on who should be the next manager of our beloved ITFC. The one thing I wish for is for all this passion that's posted on here be replicated at our home, Portman rd. We have our part to play on match day and I no there hasn't been much to shout about but let's get behind our team ( loanees or not) and get back to winning ways on Saturday against a Sheffield side who are also in the mire! Ipswich till I die!

Blues1 - Nope. Not using the site to "slag off Clegg".

Just making a comment about a specific quote that he made and questioning whether he has a good track record in the regard of choosing good managers.

There is a HUGE difference between gently suggesting someone has a bad track record and '"slagging them off".

Just thought I ought to clarify...
