Clegg: Long List of 34 Names
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 16:27

Chief executive Simon Clegg says Town already have a long list of potential successors to Paul Jewell 34 names long. Clegg was speaking at a press conference after Jewell’s time at Town was ended by mutual consent earlier today.

Clegg said: “There is a process under way at the moment. I’m not going to go into any details on that. We want to appoint a replacement as quickly as possible.

“In the short-term, particularly given where we are in the table at this moment in time, the most important thing is picking up three points on Saturday, which is why I have asked Chris Hutchings to take on the role of caretaker-manager for that game and beyond if necessary.

“Until such time as we appoint a permanent replacement manager, Chris Hutchings will be in charge.“

Former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is widely believed to be the leading candidate to be Jewell’s replacement, but Clegg wouldn’t be drawn on specific candidates: “There are a lot of people out there who are in the frame.

“We have a long list of about 34 names. We’re in the process of whittling that down to a short list and are hoping to get to a position where we can make a formal announcement as soon as possible.

“When you find yourself in a situation like this, first of all we’ve pulled together a list of names ourselves, in terms of the owner, myself and the owner’s advisors, but a number of people have applied. The phone has been red hot since midday today.”

Ex-Crystal Palace boss Dougie Freedman, whose move to Bolton appears to have hit a stumbling block, is also another manager understood to have been approached by the Blues, but again Clegg wouldn’t be drawn: “There is wild speculation out there and a number of names have been mentioned, but you wouldn’t expect me to comment on any one individual.”

Other bosses likely to be linked are the likes of Alex McLeish, Owen Coyle, Billy Davies, Steve Kean and Mick McCarthy, while Clegg says there has been interest from interested parties both from the UK and abroad.

Is it me or is this man totally uninspiring?

Imagine him trying to sell the club to a good manager, ain't gonna happen people.

We'll end up with another washout has been on the ME gravy boat.

Though you lot were right and I was wrong - time for him to go. Ah well, win some (there's a thought) lose some...

Cut to the chase there might be 34 names on the list but Alan Curbishley was already chosen some while ago and possibly is already on a retainer.

We have to be realistic. A lot of 'potential' managers out there don't see us as a 'big' or attractive club anymore. When a new man is appointed, I am willing to bet that 90% of ITFC supporters will say ' No! not him'.

Bluetone - AC or not, that means there are 34 who think they couldn't fail to do a better job than RK or PJ

What about Paulo Di Canio? Doing a great job with Swindon and would bring a serious no nonsense attitude to the club along with the style of football we all want to see?

Pity we couldn't have found 34 players who wanted to sign for us instead of all the loanees.

After having survived the twin whammy of Keane followed by Jewel , this appointment has to be the right one , his remit has to be championship survival plus a talent for bringing through young players , preferably without a manic tendency toward the loan market> I have no suggestions as to who this should be but it wont be curbishley and i certainly hope it wont be coyle or steve kean

whoever mentioned Dougie Freedman is a tadge late as I'm sure his deal is done at Bolton.. would have been my choice, but nevermind.. what still concerns me is the donut (Clegg) involved in next appointment.. excuse me, but my view is full of negatives and cannot see us avoiding relegation with this man at my great club

It's like the summer transfer window all over again! Although this time it will be managers linked and not players. Freedman, Karl Robinson, Billy Davies or Alan Curbishley would be on my shorter list.

I know! Line all 34 on the pitch Saturday. Give them 30 seconds on the mike to let the fans know how they will get Town out of this mess, then we can have an X factor type vote. The revenue from the 'phones calls could go towards a pot so the 'winner' can buy a new player in the transfer window.
