Clegg: Long List of 34 Names
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 16:27

Chief executive Simon Clegg says Town already have a long list of potential successors to Paul Jewell 34 names long. Clegg was speaking at a press conference after Jewell’s time at Town was ended by mutual consent earlier today.

Clegg said: “There is a process under way at the moment. I’m not going to go into any details on that. We want to appoint a replacement as quickly as possible.

“In the short-term, particularly given where we are in the table at this moment in time, the most important thing is picking up three points on Saturday, which is why I have asked Chris Hutchings to take on the role of caretaker-manager for that game and beyond if necessary.

“Until such time as we appoint a permanent replacement manager, Chris Hutchings will be in charge.“

Former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is widely believed to be the leading candidate to be Jewell’s replacement, but Clegg wouldn’t be drawn on specific candidates: “There are a lot of people out there who are in the frame.

“We have a long list of about 34 names. We’re in the process of whittling that down to a short list and are hoping to get to a position where we can make a formal announcement as soon as possible.

“When you find yourself in a situation like this, first of all we’ve pulled together a list of names ourselves, in terms of the owner, myself and the owner’s advisors, but a number of people have applied. The phone has been red hot since midday today.”

Ex-Crystal Palace boss Dougie Freedman, whose move to Bolton appears to have hit a stumbling block, is also another manager understood to have been approached by the Blues, but again Clegg wouldn’t be drawn: “There is wild speculation out there and a number of names have been mentioned, but you wouldn’t expect me to comment on any one individual.”

Other bosses likely to be linked are the likes of Alex McLeish, Owen Coyle, Billy Davies, Steve Kean and Mick McCarthy, while Clegg says there has been interest from interested parties both from the UK and abroad.

No to Curbishley as his record barely better than Jewell.

this next appointment will tell us loads about the ambition of ME. Will we get stuck with an old has been like McCarthy or Curbishley or get someone used to having no budget like Karl Robinson. I've been very critical of Clegg and Evans but would love to see an appoinyment that showed real imagination or ambition. Tim Sherwood would fit the bill for me but I'd prefer a gamble on Robinson over McCarthy/Curbishley.

Whoever it is, i just hope they are appointed quickly because we don't want the Hutchings/McCarthy dream team (lol!) in charge for any longer than necessary because whenever PJ left a job, Hutchings has succeeded him, mostly as a caretaker manager and he has been hopeless. In 2/3 matches time we could be adrift at the bottom of the table. Can't see the players responding to him being in charge against Sheff Weds on Saturday anymore than they have been for Jewell recently, they will know that Hutchings is just keeping the seat warm for the new manager, also don't see him doing anything tactically different to Jewell either. Be ready for it to get worse, before it gets better!!

Some may agree, more will probably disagree! however, i think we need a young ambitious manager, with passion, and a footballing brain. Now Gus Poyet would suit alot of peoples needs and he has got brighton playing proper football the way we are used to seeing it played at PR, but were not gonna get Gus so why not go for his number 2. Yep i said it!! Mauricio Tarrico!! had success as poyets no 2 and will want to see if he can make the step up to management.... however this will also require the appointment of a director of football!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK GUYS!!!

Instead of going for someone who's out of work, presumably for a reason, lets poach a good up & coming manager from another club!

Don't think Pj was totally to blame, more incompetence up the ladder in the transfer dealings carries the can as well. Some senior Pros let u down as well Paul, you know the names. Got the tactics wrong tho' 4-5-1 at home when our lives depended on it, will never be understood.

Karl Robinson or Gary Smith fit the bill right now, but doubt we shall get neither..

Needs to be that young MK Dons manager ....or if we could ever be bold enough to try for him (not that I think Evans would ever go for it, or that the man himself would ever consider becoming our manager), Id love us to got for .... Holloway!

In business and in life it is rare to obtain wide agreement.

This appointment has to be down to Evans & Clegg, who I am sure will do their very best for the club. To be frank, for people with little football experience, Keane & Jewell looked fairly ambitious/relaible appointments.

Let's voice our opinions and try to influence, but more importantly, whoever is appointed let's all get right behind the new manager and team. Our solid support will help to resolve this current mess!

Good points raised but I do not see how we can write off our whole season after 12 games!!
I agree that we need to bed in youth and can not understand why players such as Hyam and Carson are not given a fair run. Short term, unfit loanees are not the solution and it has only confirmed the panic and lack of strategy that PJ had.
I for one, want a young, hungry manager with lower league experience so that we can stop shopping at Waitrose and concentrate on our level..... Tesco's and below :)
Let's get some pride back in our club and have players that feel honoured to wear a Town shirt !!

Everyone has their own view who they want/don't want and no doubt not everyone will be happy with whoever it is.

However, its a time for all supporters to unite and get behind the team because if we do we will have a far better chance of climbing the table.

How about Michael Caine? He pulled off a great result as captain/manager of the Allies Team in Escape to Victory and in doing so got the best out of a squad which was packed with Ipswich players.

Billy Davies or Ian Holloway . Billy Davies has a proven record at Forest getting them into the playoffs season after season . Holloway has a soft spot with Ipswich and will give em a kick up the arse if required . Dont think i saw Jewell get up once last nite apart from half time and full time . Thats gona motivate everybody .

Well put WarkyWonderLand...my thoughts exactly. I'm kinda excited who it will be. And whoever it is I will give them a chance. To be judging managers already astounds me!
There may be certain ones I may prefer over others, but at the end of the day its not our decision. Let's just all stick together now shall we to try to get out of this hole we are in.

Apart from the odd one, How come the only comments with a positive rating are only those saying who we don't want? I appreciate the sentimentality over mills, Tarrico and butcher, but I'd much rather have someone who is proven even if its a proven lower league man (as Adkins and lambert were). Mills last management was 15yrs plus ago, Tarrico is untried? Butcher has had no success anywhere of any note. If we are getting sentimental how about getting someone creative like muhren back? If not then mr burley please. Least we will have football worth watching.

Tempting to see how Southampton get on in the next two or three games because Nigel Adkins could be on his way out if results go against them and he would be ideal here.
