Hutchings: Players Let Themselves and Paul Down
Friday, 26th Oct 2012 06:01

Caretaker-boss Chris Hutchings says the players have let themselves down as much as departed manager Paul Jewell. The one-time Chelsea full-back is taking control of the Blues for Saturday’s home game against Sheffield Wednesday and any other matches prior to the appointment of a new boss.

Asked whether the players let Jewell down, Hutchings said: “I think they’ve let themselves down as well.

“Players under-perform. We might get five or six play OK, one or two all right. We haven’t got a consistent seven out of 10 all the way along.

“We’ve got to start being a lot more consistent, people knowing their jobs, not that they didn’t before but it needs to be reinforced.”

Despite this, he believes the club’s new manager will inherit a decent squad at a “fantastic” club: “We’ve got some good players.

“It’s a very, very good job. You look at the facilities, look at what’s around you, look at the ground. Why wouldn’t people want to take it? There will be a lot of big names who want to take this job.”

Hutchings says too many errors have been made which have cost points, something he says he’ll not tolerate during what's likely to be a short tenure as boss: “The players have made individual mistakes and we’ve got punished for them. You can’t make mistakes, it’s as simple as that.

“You make one mistake, you may get away with it. You make two you get punished. That’s what happens at this level. You make one mistake in the Premier League and you get punished.

“It’s about players. They go across the line. What are they going to give you? They’re going to make mistakes. If they keep making mistakes, they don’t stay in the team. That’s the way I work.”

He says he has outlined that approach to the players: “I didn’t lay down the law, I just told them how it’s going to be - what I expect and if you haven’t done it before, this is how it is. There’s going to be no grey areas.

“They’ll all know their job on Saturday. Everyone. And if they don’t do it, they’ll be off. There won’t be any hanging about. My job’s on the line.”

He believes the squad is well capable of being much higher in the table: “Whether it’s me in charge or anyone else in charge, we’ve got a good set of players. We’ve got to get the best out of them.

“We’ve made mistakes, I’m not going to say we haven’t, but we’ll get the best out of them on Saturday. Whether that’ll be good enough to get a result, let’s wait and see. But the effort will be there.”

In terms of the team he’ll field for Saturday’s match against Sheffield Wednesday, he hints that it could differ from the sides Jewell picked: “We have a lot of the same ideas but it might not be the same personnel.

“I’ll pick the team and I’ll pick the team which I think will win the game, simple as that. I’ll get no interference, I’ll speak to my staff, but ultimately it will be my decision.

“All my staff are right behind me at this moment in time as I’m caretaker-manager and they’ll be fighting in the right direction.”

Regarding any further details of his selection, he was remaining tight-lipped: “You’ll have to wait and see.”

I hope for a win on sat, as we all do, but i hope chris leaves the club with appointment of the new man.

He reckons we have 10 men, it always used to be eleven, lol And why this no crap attitude now? Should be there every minute , true to say that jewell had to go, but alot of players should be given the boot also. really looking forward to the new manager kicking the crap out.its another new dawn, bring it on :) ....COYB

I like this attitude. Some of our players really do need a kick up the backside. I'm interested to see how many loan players he puts in the first team on Saturday.

I hope that Hutchings has the bottle to not even name the five that were out late Wednesday night in the squad for tomorrows match, then we will see if his no nonsence approach is more than words in print.

I would love to see Hutchings in the position of temporary boss blow our minds and do something totally different, IE Play 2 up front, give Mohsni (he has been pumped and warmed up every game, has hunger and I bet would give a hell of a show if started) put Edwards in MF Left and really make the team work their bottoms off. He has a game, maybe two to experiment for the sake of it, and hope he doesn't stick to PJ's template.

I'd like to see Chris drop Carlos Edwards or at least move him up the field... that would be a statement for sure

Can't see it as he has been Jewells assistant for 20 years so will have the same mind set as Pj he would have had the same vision as how to play the game.

He is not the man to take us forward in my opinion

I think Hutch has missed the point! Jewell has mismanaged the team with constant changes, poor tactics, namely one up front, playing tallest players out wide etc. Hutch could make his mark with using our resourses to best effect and playing the fittest team. Still he'll be gone when new manager is installed.

He is a man desperatley trying to make his mark and keep his job.
I also think he is trying to make a good impression in his prospective employers when he leave Town.

This reaction might get a few good performances (& i hope it works) but we have seen with RK a long term no-nonsence blame culture doesnt lead to a happy place.

Now I'm really interested to see the players Chris picks on saturday!! Could tell us alot about the players.

I'm sorry but CH is as culpable as PJ is for getting us into this mess. Unless he was at odds with PJ over style, tactics, formations etc, I can't see that there will be any major changes to the way we play on Saturday. If Carlos was correct in saying some of the team had stopped playing for PJ, why woiuld they then start playing for CH? Unless of course it is to impress the new manager.

We have played well at times this season and should be beating the likes of Sheff W whoever is in charge.

Looking forward to 3 points COYB

good point. why will they play for jewells assistant? it was probably good cop bad cop and jewell was the f softy and they didnt work hard enough for him. Players are not only greedy in general , they choose when to "play " aswell. Too much player power. If they get bored with the manager they manouvre him out. Terrible

A chance here to put down a marker at this once proud club, i agree the 5 who where out should not be in Saturdays squad. It also proves that those of us who said Chopra should be treated same as Bullard after last years drinking session where correct he clearly has not learnt his lesson. Its about time he repaid this club for all the support he's getting.

Expel any trouble makers and those who don't care. I am suspicious of several of our layers in this respect.

At least the gate should be up on Saturday, with all the Town 'supporters' who claimed to be staying away until Jewell left back through the turnstiles!

True of most,not all.

Too many players here to pick up their pay cheques and nothing else.

This club needs a bloody good sort out top to bottom.

Chris Hutchings you also to let PJ down you was his right man, it also goes without saying the players have not put in a good performance for months. Lets not worry about PJ he has gone now.
Chris Hutchings you should apologise to the fans for letting them down so badly the sooner you go from the Club the better
