Hutchings: Senior Players Let Me Down
Saturday, 27th Oct 2012 18:33

Caretaker-boss Chris Hutchings felt he was let down by his more experienced players as the Blues slumped to a dismal 3-0 home defeat in what’s likely to be the former Chelsea full-back’s only game in charge.

Hutchings admitted that it was very much a below par display: “It wasn’t very good, obviously there was a lot of anxiousness about.

“Any manager or coach will say to start the game brightly or sharply, and we conceded after 46 seconds or whatever it was. That puts you on the back foot straight away.

“Then for 10 minutes we came under the cosh a little bit and as the game wore on we got back into it a little bit, but didn’t create too many clear cut chances and were wasteful with a few freekicks.

“In the second half, it was pretty even. I thought they scored a little bit against the run of play in that particular phase. I’m not saying we were dominating the game in any way shape or form because we weren’t.

“Then we’ve obviously tried to make changes to try and get back into it and it opened up a little bit more.

“The things that we’ve been working on very briefly in the last couple of days, about trying to get down the line, we’ve let their wideman cut inside and score, which is very disappointing.”

He says the more senior players were outshone by the youngsters: “One or two of the older players haven’t performed anywhere near what they can do, but I was pleased for Luke Hyam and Josh Carson, they were the only bright sparks, showing a little bit of effort and commitment.

“I don’t think we got it from one or two of the older players, but we conceded in the opening minute and confidence in sport is a massive thing. Whether that affected one or two remains to be seen, but it was very disappointing.

“I thought Josh and Luke stuck to their task well and showed a little bit of enthusiasm and a little bit of workrate.

“Sometimes when you put younger players in you could ask for a little bit more quality but I thought those two did all right today.”

He says words were had in the dressing room: “I was angry, disappointed, that should go without saying.

“The players are disappointed, one or two things have been said that will remain in the dressing room. It’s not good getting beaten 3-0, I’ve got to come up here and defend that.

“I told them they need to look at themselves in the mirror. I don’t pass it out of play, I don’t pass it to the opposition, and the players that haven’t performed anywhere that they can know that.”

Asked whether the players are waiting for the new manager to come in, he added: “I don’t think they’re waiting for something to happen because they should be professional people and have that desire and drive to perform for anybody. It’s their job, they get well paid for it and that’s what they should do.

“They haven’t [performed] for a while, and that’s why they’re four points adrift at the bottom of the table.”

He says they should be able to cope with the speculation that’s currently surrounding the club, and believes that self-belief is the biggest issue: “I think what it is is a lack of confidence, like in any sport.

“When you’re down you’ve got to show a bit of balls and come back. Some can, some can’t, sometimes it takes longer than others to come through periods like this.”

The Sir Bobby Robson Stand chanted ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at one point in the second half, and in some cases Hutchings found it difficult to disagree based on that performance: “I didn’t hear that, but that’s their opinion. They probably are right for one or two.”

He admits that whoever comes in has a difficult task: “It’s going to be very hard whoever takes over, but you have to grind it out.

“If you can get new players in, I think that’s what’s needed, if I’m totally honest. But that remains to be seen.

“You never want to take over a team at the bottom of the table but it’ll be an opportunity for someone.”

He says he’s yet to decide whether to bring the squad in for training tomorrow, as has often been the case after defeats and is in the dark about where things go in the immediate future: “I don’t know. I was just told to try and prepare for the game. We’re just taking things day by day as all the staff do.

“That’s what happens at football clubs. The manager goes and someone has to take charge of the team and the day to day running of it, the training, and you get on with things. It’s not a nice scenario, but that’s how it is.”

Massimo Luongo played for parent club Tottenham’s U21s this morning, but Hutchings says he’ll be back at the club on Monday: “Being a loanee, they have called him back to play as he wasn’t in the squad and we’ve allowed him to do that, but he’ll be back on Monday morning.”

Wednesday boss Dave Jones believed the result had been coming: “We’ve felt that for the last five or six games. We’ve stuck to what we believed in and kept believing it would turn and unfortunately for Ipswich today, they probably got the full force of us.

“On Wednesday [against Blackburn], the one thing we didn’t do, and the only thing we haven’t done over the last four or five games, is put the ball in the back of the net. We’ve dominated games.”

Love the people that are harping on about Cresswell, Carson and Hyam doing well and being the only players fit to wear the shirt just, when really it's just because they are young. Everyone was poor today, how Carson has suddenly come into the squad and played nearly the whole game is baffling to me, and I think he showed why he hasn't been being picked. Cresswell made far too many mistakes and wasted the free kicks that even the manager is making note of. JET should have started instead of Carson, he was the best player in the Derby game and now is suddenly dropped.

However, what could we expect? Jewell's backroom staff have come in, so we could hardly expect a drastic change of tactics, so it's really no surprise that we were backing in the same areas.

This is the lowest ebb my team has been at since I have been watching them and sadly I see no way out now. Next season in Division One we will have to start all over again as most of these players will not be here and on todays performance that will not matter. I am sure there will be plenty of takers for the Managers job but my goodness he has a mammoth task to turn this sorry state of affairs around.

jas - try looking back and u will find that most of the criticism u got wasnt cos people loved him but more that u turned EVERY news story into an anti PJ rant. Please dont do the same with the new man, whoever he is.

The comments on here tonight are very forthright but true but you still get the head in the sand brigade claiming your all moaners. Hindsight is a wonderful thing as they say but i never wanted Jewell in the fisrt place. The names mentioned so far dont really excite me but if any i would go for McCarthy. Not to sure about his style of football but as a man seems to tell it like it is. All i want is for a new guy to come in and restore some pride im sure the goodtimes will then follow.

As Chopra said no worries about going out on the lash on Wed night! You reap what you sow MR Chopra, when will us loyal fans feel like going out on the lash? I dont think i've ever felt so low about the club i love. Well done Luke Hyam, probley on least cash and making the most effort. For me most of the loans can go back.

Lets be honest we have been complete no hopers in defence for several years and have had nothing prolific up fron either.

i apologise to all you who turn up each week and accept you see things for 90 minutes but I cannot justify £200 plus for getting there to see such utter crap.

Against Cardiff Edwards looked great first half but they addressed that at half time and he was his usual rubbish self trying to defend in the second half. Something he cannot do.
Personnaly I blame Clegg, dont think he could make a footballing deal, probably a clever f*cker but knows nothing of football. He must go otherwise what chance has the new manager got in January.

Please not Megson, the worst dross
Personally I blame Cleg

Burley is a lot different to these other managers being mentioned. He is Ipswich through and through. Dozzells_Bobblehat, he actually left them. With the squad these abroad teams have too, he can't exactly attract amazing players?

If you're all happy with getting Mick, good luck to you. I'll be behind him as I do with every other manager, but it will end in the same failure.

In his ten mins Mohsni showed more passion than the rest of the team. Sorry Carson but you simply aren't good enough.

I agree with Sam that there was nothing special about Carson and Cresswell today - Carson did make a few runs forward but the Wednesday defence always had total control and otherwise he was ineffective. Cresswell really should have made at least one good thing happen (e.g. a header on goal???) from the 3 wasted freekick opportunities. Hyam had some spirit getting into tackles and was fairly composed at times but that was it.

The first goal was ridiculous, how Henderson didn't save that from where I was sitting I do not know. The second goal was to be predicted and the 3rd goal was FARCICAL. Did anyone know what was going on there? It looked as if Henderson was gesturing to the sidelines in wonderment as if he was about to be taken off, and in the confusion SW just took advantage of it.

I was so P'd off about the whole thing though, it felt like Hutchings chose a team that Jewel would have chosen 1 or 2 months ago, but at least with Jewell we would have lost by a lesser margin!

All in all it was just negative and boring DROSS. Hutchings had a chance to do something imaginative, change things around a bit. The crowd loved Mohsni - why not start him up front with Cambell? It would have at least lifted the team. Why wait until well affter 75 mins to but Mohsni and JET on and we conceded 2 goals? What was going through his head? I wouldn't have minded losing 3-0 if at least we TRIED something different, or took some risks. I hope to God this is rock bottom now, it can't get any worse. I'm sorry to say I predicted this result and expected it, but to Sheffield Wednesday? We have lost all dignity.

Time to splash a bit of cash and lure Holloway here, BEFORE the next game.

Samwhite, spot on with your comments.

Full backs were poor today. Martin & Carson were poor but at least Carson should get better. Hyam did ok but should have Drury or Luongo in ther with him. Why don't we play Murphy up front and add some much needed height? He usually wins most balls in the air. DJ had no service. Jet should have been on from the start. Our only quality attacking player who can take a man on, cross or shoot.

Hitchings wants shooting for that team selection today.

Elkcib - I honestly don't know what to say. The club is a complete mess - it clearly needs an experienced manger and frankly I can't see beyond Mick McCarthy - who even 'dealt with' RK when a player ... we currently have the likes of Chopra arguing with fans on Twitter - this has to stop ... PJ clearly didn;t stand up to these players.

His style of football may not be everyone's cup of tea - but lets face it - decent football has not been on offer for a while at PR. We need to get out of this complete mess.

The after match comments from Chris Hutchings are fine, they reflect the desperation felt around the whole club and its supporters throughout the country and Europe. I actually wept when I heard the result this afternoon. The squad of permanent and loanee players is woefully short, and has been for a long time. It was a miracle we stayed up last season, when you consider the situation as it was in January (I see McCarthy is letting in goals for Reading in the Premier League at the moment - they would have got a point at Anfield with a good keeper). We need a 10 times bigger miracle to stay up this season. What worthwhile manager would want to come here? A propos of nothing, the ticket prices stink - and a new manager will know that, but he will want to fill the stadium. The management team of Evans and Clegg sets Ipswich Town behind all our competitors. Oh, and I actually quite liked Paul Jewell's coat. Who will replace the coat? Perhaps Mick McCarthy or Gary Megson wear the sheepskin collar variety. If I go on my TWTD home page I might find my comment about George Burley leaving Cyprus to join Town, but was that on a another site? Getting old, so can't remember. But, far more important, the only people who can save us are the players, and it will take some special players, maybe 1 legend and 2 younger stars who step up. The 2 younger stars can come from the existing squad, as they respond to playing with the legend, but let me tell you who I mean when I talk about a legend. They only come along every 10 years or more, and therefore only two in the last 25 years or so. John Wark (signed by John Duncan) and Tony Mowbray (signed by George Burley). To get a legend to come in like those two, the manager who comes in now will need to already have that special relationship with a legend, to persuade him to join the sinking Ipswich Town. Who the legend is, matters far more than who the manager is. The lower down the pyramid you are, the harder it is to attract a manager who knows a legend and can have a word in his ear to sign him up.

Woeful, riseable stuff from Town today. Terrible, and worse still not even close to the attitudes and dedication and effort required in professional sport.

Agree with all you say abuja, but what amazes me is all the crowd can see it ,but not the idiot in charge. How easy it must be to get these coaching badges these days if Hutchings has got one. -Almost feel sorry for Jewell having a loser like that as an assistant.- Everyones fault , including the fans, but his.

There was me thinking it was free beer for the fans and the players of ITFC had finished the lot before kick -off or so it appeared.
Clearly it is not just PJ that was the problem but the inept coaching staff. Same old formation no hope.
Need to get rid of every defender that played today as not good enough / motivated enough to succeed here.
Cresswell for me is a liability. His free kicks are apalling.
Hats off to Hyam, Wellens and Martin for at least putting a shift in.
Sad to see this at PR . This is possibly the worst team that I have seen in 40 years at PR.

Dozzells_Bobblehat: My apologies if it came across this way - I accept my dislike for PJ (from day one) influenced some of my comments - yet I also praised him when we had the (albeit) occasional result. Sadly many pro-PJ fans didn't bother posting after a loss! However, my worst fears from PJ's Derby days sadly materialized. I still believe he should never have been appointed and won;t make any apology for that. In fact, I still believe we are in this mess because he wasn't sacked sooner - of course that was Evans and Cleggs fault. I just hope we get the next appointment right and although for reasons stated my vote goes to McCarthy - unless it's Megson, I'll certainly give the new manager a chance - BUT must admit I felt very strongly that PJ was not the man. It's with regret that proved to be the case.

jas0999 - fair enough. I too would go for McCarthy. Not my ideal man but i think we need some graft and discipline badly and feel he may bring that. My heart would love Burley and Holland but think they (or any of the old boys) are too much of a gamble.

To me there is only 1 way out of this mess,
1. ME spend another 3 million and buy Mowbray and Venus out of there contracts and compensate Middlesborough.
2. Accept relegation.
3. Let the pair of them build the youth system the way that they have Middlesboroughs.
4. 7 home grown players under 23, played for them today and they are 3rd, smatters of our past?

Can't see why the managers vacancy is attractive. Who would want it. The squad needs to be raised to the ground. Send all loanees back straight away. We're better off taking a random sample of eleven, twenty-something-year-old fans and watching them put up a fight. At least they'd try!
