McCarthy: Everything in Place at Portman Road
Thursday, 1st Nov 2012 13:01

New manager Mick McCarthy says everything is in place at Town, it’s just that things haven’t gone right on the pitch. McCarthy’s appointment as Blues boss was confirmed this morning.

Speaking in a lengthy interview with Ipswich Player, McCarthy said: “This is a good football club first and foremost, and it’s sad to see it languishing where it is.

“I feel for Paul and Hutch and I have spoken to them both. I know how disappointed they are that it didn’t work out for them. When you look around the place, everything is here. It’s just not happened on the pitch.”

He says he will speak to the staff and the squad about why the team has ended up bottom of the Championship: “I’ll take opinions from the coaching staff and the players. Everyone has to analyse their own performance of why the club is where it is.

“I want success here and I’ve got a good feeling about the place, that’s why I’m here. I want to get Ipswich Town going in the right direction, but make no mistake, at the moment the club is in a relegation battle and we’ve got to fight and scrap to get out of it.”

McCarthy says his assistant Terry Connor has a big role to play at Portman Road: “Terry is a fantastic coach.

“He has a good football knowledge and has worked his way up from a community coach at Bristol Rovers to working at the top level.

“He prepares well for games, is good with the players and around the dressing room and he demands high standards. He will be good for Ipswich Town.”

Regarding the number of loan players currently at the club — eight plus short-term signing Nigel Reo-Coker - he admits it’s “not ideal” but understands from talking with the staff that they have “enhanced the team” since they have been here.

Overall, he feels he is inheriting a decent set of players as he begins the task of pushing the Blues up the table and out of danger: “I look at the squad and there’s quality here.”

McCarthy and chief executive Simon Clegg will be holding a press conference at 5pm, which BBC Radio Suffolk is broadcasting live online.

Pleased with this appointment one of my three top choices along with Owen Coyle and Billy Davies, its a well known fact that managers go back to their old clubs for players,is there anyone at Wolves who are not in 1st team that could do a job for us?Come up with a few names Dave Edwards,Richard Stearman, Stephen Hunt,Frank Nouble Ronald Zubar .Thoughts !!!

Which loan players have "enhanced" the team pray tell ?

PLEASE make your own judgement MM - the staff have no clue clearly. Crazy idea, but maybe talk to the odd supporter instead of those within the club with their heads buried in the sand, and who probably think we were a stroke of luck away from turning things around under PJ. Reality is we are lucky to not be further adrift of the pack.

Good luck Mick, fans are right behind ya

does make me laugh, like a lot on here, "talking with the staff that they have “enhanced the team”" just shows how delusional some of the staff are. If they had enhanced things surely things would've been getting better on the pitch not worse?

Know loads of Wolves fans living up here and they all have nothing but praise for "Big Mick" as we have already christened him. They all felt that if Wolves had kept faith with him they would probably have stayed up.
They think we've got a cracker, and I agree!!
SUPER MICKS BARMY ARMY!!

Welcome Mick & Terry. You bring a good, positive feeling to the club. If the fans of your former club are still supporting you, that's a very good sign for me. It's a helluva job you've been left with, but I wish you (us) all the best. I hope any of my future trips over to see your team never reach the depths of the Wednesday match I subjected myself to.

Glad to have him here...feels like we're in a safe pair of hands ala Joe Royle.

Let's not expect miracles though..survival first,then upwards.

Good luck again Mick and welcome to Ipswich.

Well I'm pleased. He certainly comes across as a no nonsense manager. We are going to need one of those with some of our squad. Although with benefit of the doubt and fresh starts the same players might actually perform how they are supposed to.

Up the town. Mighty Mick.

Love most of the very positive posts and some of the song suggestions, especially oh micky you're so fine; need to get Rob Chandler to play it first home game. Wasn't my first choice but I believe the right appointment for the situation we're in. Can't wait to hear press conference..it's taken me 20 months to learn scouse, now I've got to learn Yorkshire Ha!Ha! Mick will tell you how it is...absolutely no B..LSH*T with this fella. COYB

welcome to big mick and t.c.so refreshing to have a wave of optimism from everyone.hope it puts a few more bums on seats next home game.not what many wanted as first chioce but still an appointment that shows intent.on a different subject, quote,"enhanced the the team" no you havent.. you have caused a problem by not having the capability to get the loan signings here before the start of the season instead they are drifting straight into the first team.and you cannot tell me that it wont get players who committed before the season started p~~~~ed off! no you have helped create disharmony in the squad, good luck mick! p.s. mick is the only new appointment who actually looks glad to be here!

Good Luck Mick & Terry!
Saturday might be a little bit too soon to expect a big difference but hopefully we will see the players raise their games to impress the new gaffer. My guess is that MM will start with getting the defence into some kind of order first, so I wouldnt be expecting a big difference instantly from the lazy boys up front. I would be absolutely delighted with a 0-0 on Saturday.

Good luck Mick, i'll be fully behind you! Let's just not be too optimistic yet. I doubt if we will win Saturday as he's only just came in. Not expecting much, but who knows? The way Birmingham have been playing lately, I fancy us but not getting too excited yet.

BIG SLIM MICK'S BLUE AND WHITE ARMY! Nice to see someone from God's own County in the ITFC driver's seat :) I too am optimistic and have a good feeling about this appointment (well, pair of appointments with Terry Connor) and my instinct has only ever been wrong once in my many decades of life! Where we're at it could take a pretty long time for us to start climbing the table however, so my plea to fellow fans is to pleeeaaase be patient, get your asses down to PR and up the land for away performances with a huge surround-sound to get the lads tails up - oh, and *never* boo during the 90+ mins as it'll only damage certain players already low confidence even more. *Please*. Thanks in advance!
