McCarthy: Everything in Place at Portman Road
Thursday, 1st Nov 2012 13:01

New manager Mick McCarthy says everything is in place at Town, it’s just that things haven’t gone right on the pitch. McCarthy’s appointment as Blues boss was confirmed this morning.

Speaking in a lengthy interview with Ipswich Player, McCarthy said: “This is a good football club first and foremost, and it’s sad to see it languishing where it is.

“I feel for Paul and Hutch and I have spoken to them both. I know how disappointed they are that it didn’t work out for them. When you look around the place, everything is here. It’s just not happened on the pitch.”

He says he will speak to the staff and the squad about why the team has ended up bottom of the Championship: “I’ll take opinions from the coaching staff and the players. Everyone has to analyse their own performance of why the club is where it is.

“I want success here and I’ve got a good feeling about the place, that’s why I’m here. I want to get Ipswich Town going in the right direction, but make no mistake, at the moment the club is in a relegation battle and we’ve got to fight and scrap to get out of it.”

McCarthy says his assistant Terry Connor has a big role to play at Portman Road: “Terry is a fantastic coach.

“He has a good football knowledge and has worked his way up from a community coach at Bristol Rovers to working at the top level.

“He prepares well for games, is good with the players and around the dressing room and he demands high standards. He will be good for Ipswich Town.”

Regarding the number of loan players currently at the club — eight plus short-term signing Nigel Reo-Coker - he admits it’s “not ideal” but understands from talking with the staff that they have “enhanced the team” since they have been here.

Overall, he feels he is inheriting a decent set of players as he begins the task of pushing the Blues up the table and out of danger: “I look at the squad and there’s quality here.”

McCarthy and chief executive Simon Clegg will be holding a press conference at 5pm, which BBC Radio Suffolk is broadcasting live online.

This takes me back to 1964. We were bottom of the old 2nd division with hardly a point when the club appointed Bill McGarry in my opinion the best manager this club ever had for what he achieved. By the end of the season we finished 5th, one place above the scum, and he produced the masterstroke of re signing Ray Crawford. In the years we were back in the top flight. What is now needed is for Evans to back him with real money so we can compete on a even playing field. It would be good to see the back of Clegg and a top job for Matt Holland.

Good news that he has spoken to PJ. Obviously he said nothing to put him off coming and has undoubtedly given him the low down on the players, in particular the ones that PJ feel let him down.

I was pleased when Keane took over only to be bitterly disappointed.

I thougt PJ was an OK appointment and to be fair he started well but ultimately disappointed.

With MM I have a really good feeling. Third time lucky! No disappointments here! Shame we are not at home Saturday cos I can't make trip to Brum.

Magilton - I don't agree with players going straight from team to manager's Office at same club.
Keane - could never understand this appointment.
Jewell - think he was too damaged by things at Derby
McCarthy - delighted with appointment - shape up or ship out time

PROGRESS is the key word for me ,which as fans we have not seen for the last few seasons, so thats all we ask- just that we can see movement in the right direction, because despite what chopra thinks, we arent idiots, and i think we are very patient so good luck BIG MICK. we will get right behind you im sure.

Can someone explain this obsession with Matt Holland being part of the group ? With no experience in management or coaching what does he offer in our current plight ?

Welcome aboard MM. I'm sure he will turn us around fairly quickly as discipline is the issue.
First on the list is 4 defenders must include two dominant centre halves.

Hi All - Wolves Fan here.

This is a great appointment for you. Mick WILL keep you up. He might in time get you promoted BUT

1. If he does get you promoted, you must sack him immediately because he is not a premiership manager.

2. Terry Conner is not a good appointment. I'm surprised Mick has taken him. When Mick moves on, whenever that is, DO NOT in any circumstances give TC the job.

Good Luck with the season.

First things first, can't help thinking PJ made a similar assessment when he took over about the quality of the squad but the difference between the two hopefully will be massive when the players don't put a shift in BEWARE: Chopra, JET, Martin etc. you'll all be in the firing line! Nice to see that he'll be assessing the players/staff about what's gone wrong (no doubt some of the players will wholly put the blame on the previous management but MM will soon see through that).
Anybody doubting MM's credentials should look at his win % on wiki - pretty good considering the clubs other he managed (maybe not Sunderland in that catergory). All the best Mick and Terry and hope this is the start of a new dawn. (More upbeat about this then when PJ came that's for sure).

great appointment and actually i agree that the loan signings have improved our squad.... higginbotham - only true hard cb, dj campbell- actual goalscorer, Wellens and reo coker - only real ball winners in squad. henderson - best gk in the squad. However we need a major overhaul and release prima donnas such as martin jet and chops
