McCarthy Up for Challenge of Unfair Fight
Tuesday, 23rd Apr 2013 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says he’s looking forward to the challenge of competing against relegated former Premier League sides with the “huge advantage” of increased parachute payments next season.

The Premier League plans to raise parachute payments to a total of £59 million - up from the previous figure of £48 million — split over four years: £23million in the season after relegation, £18 million in the second and £9 million in each of the following two years. By contrast, established Championship clubs will receive a £2.3 million annual solidarity payment.

Asked whether he believes those payments put the likes of the Blues at a disadvantage at a time when the division is moving to the Financial Fair Play break-even model, McCarthy was in no doubt: “What, in the Financial Fair Play bollocks league? Financial Fair Play — one team’s got £20-odd million coming down and we’ve got sweet FA.

“Of course it has an effect, it’s a huge advantage to have that. It means they can keep their teams, and Bolton have done it.

And, after whatever happened at the start of the season, they’re now in the play-offs, they kept a huge squad, a huge wage bill and a lot of players there.

“And they should be in the play-offs, they should be with the squad that they’ve got. And Wolves should have been in the play-offs with the squad that they’ve got.

“And Blackburn with the wage bill that they’ve got, they’re spending how many million on about half a dozen players.”

But while many might be discouraged by the disparity, McCarthy views it as a challenge: “It’s not fair, but I kind of like kicking against fair. I like all that, a bit of a scrap between the haves and have-nots.”

It's good to drum up the 'seige mentality'. Having clubs getting 10x the income of other clubs in the same league is crazy, but then I think Mick and Terry are at least 10x as good as some other managers so bring it on!

This bloke is brilliant and I'm so glad we have him, not just for his football genius; but for the fact he's one of us and talks and thinks how we do. He loves football like we do and hates the bollocks of football like we do. I think it's true to say the bollocks of football these days is called the FA. COYB

How come Mick is allowed to use industrial language and I got flagged in a comment for saying Tw*t? Which I don't consider a swear word anyway?

I also echo the sentiments of others that we have a cracking manager and a decent chance of a top six finish next year whatever squad we have.

Brilliant , and the problem those coming down have is the motivation of their players , relegation often means bad attitude , QPR classic example, so I see it as a positive. Yes they can keep their players ,but do their players want to fight for every ball etc etc etc. Look at this season ,how many of those that came down will go up , Possibly only Bolton if they firstly make the play offs and then win them if they do make them.. Cant wait for QPR and hopefully villa next season.COYB

My sentiments exactly Mick, well said this whole FFP is the biggest load of testicles I've ever heard of. Right from the start I said it wasn't fair but then neither are rich owners investing huge amounts of money but in doing so it's taken unfancied clubs up to the top flight who wouldn't have made it. Severe penalties should be in place for those who mismanage their finances. FFP sounds elitist to me.

Anyway, I love how straight talking Mick is and with a few good additions I really think we can be pushing for a play off spot next season.

It is totally unfair, but you have to rise to the challenge, teams like Southampton and one other have done it without premiership money, so there is hope. You need a good Manager and coaching staff, players who are hungry and play good football. We have the first one and are working on the second one, which should lead to the third one. Whilst there is hope, we don't give up!

StuartBrett9. I accept that the word you used is now commonplace but look up the original meaning and maybe the moderated has a point

stuartbrett - tw*t is a naughty word and you would expect to pay in the swear jar.

For future reference, use twunt. It is an amalgamation of the two words which is acceptable and perfectly describes Roy Keane.

Hope this clarifies.

Thank God Mick's on our side..anyhow,it doesn't matter how much money you spend (as has been proved here over the last few years)..it's having a manager who knows how to get the best out of what he has - Mick is proving to be that man and I'd rather have him and no money to spend, than millions and a clueless manager who doesn't know how to spend it.

A little bit of siege mentality can go a long way. He is completely right to be indignant about this.

We bring in FFP and are clobbered by relegated teams with parachure payments. We don't bring it in and we are clobbered by idiot foreign owners gambling their clubs as a vanity project. Sweet FA.

The parachute payments are just bewildeing, it basically says "their you go, I'm sorry about the relegation but spend this £23m right and you can get straight back up". Whlst the likes of us and Peterborough know that every decision counts because we have to keep a lid on everything financially. I dont want to moan too much though because it could be a blessing in descise, Nouble cost £25k, Stearman on loan, Tabb may join on a free and lets not forget the signings of Jarvis and Kightly at Wolves which were quite modest fees. So Mick seems the perfect manager to deal with this situation. Keane and Jewell I wouldn't of been as confident. It also makes me feel a certain pride, we will do things the hard but honest way and we have a manager with a stiff upper lip who revels in fighting the odds.

please, please can some of you calm down with the over the top cringe worthy appreciation of our management team. Fair enough, enough to look forward to after our previous coach. To say parachute payments are unfair is a bit schoolboy jargon, and pathetic. Once any team gets in this league, money or no money, it wont matter, you need to be up for it every minute of every game

At the end of the day it's 11 against 11. The overpaid relegated teams with puffed up ideas of status will still need to compete with teams hungry to claim a place in the upper echelon. The perceived quality gap can be overcome with all the recognised Championship qualities of desire, effort and not a little talent mixed with organisation and steadfastness. On the evidence of the overall performances under MM we have nothing to fear facing a QPR or Reading whatever resources they may have.

I see us as another Cardiff; we may have to wait a few seasons to achieve the ambitions we all have. But the there are several other Championship clubs who might feel the same. Whatever, history shows that relegated teams, whatever the personnel in tow, rarely rise to the occasion the league demands, and therefore good, solid, aspiring teams can be successful. Our record since MM's appointment in November last suggests that we might be one of those 'good aspiring' teams next year.

When the relegated teams get promoted again, any further amounts due to them as parachute payments are cancelled and distributed amongst the Football League clubs. I guess this means we should all be backing Bolton for the playoffs to help level the playing field a bit next season.

adamisablue added 13:37 - Apr 23
parachute payments are a direct result of what happened to us 10 or so seasons ago. loss of lucrative sky (in our case itv) money plus prem wage bill plus everyday running of the club means administration, points deductions and maybe drop out of the professional league. although it seems like a silly situation, it does save a lot of clubs from (worst case scenario) going under maybe a better plan from the fa would be to introduce wage caps AT ALL CLUBS for every league. for instance a player in the prem from man u to reading is paided 20k, upon relegation its automatically slashed to 10k and so on and so fourth. this would make it fair for everyone, a good business model and money saved in wages could go into academys tou bring youths through

these relegated clubs may have bigger names but you have to stick together and playa s a team to win.we should keep this group together keep the workrate up and i cant see why we cant do well next season.
