Doncaster Midfielder Offered Training Chance
Wednesday, 12th Jun 2013 09:32

Town and Bristol City are reported to have offered released Doncaster Rovers midfielder Martin Woods the chance to join them for pre-season training. The 27-year-old, who played for Mick McCarthy during his time as boss at Sunderland, has spent much of the last three seasons on the sidelines due to a groin injury.

The Scot, who was previously linked with a loan move to the Blues in September last year, is hoping to be fit for pre-season — which Town start in the final week of this month - having been recommended an orthodontic approach to his injury problems, which will realign his body, by specialists in Italy.

Last season he made 19 appearances, the year before only five and in 2010/11 he appeared 15 times.

Airdrie-born Woods started his career with then-Premier League Leeds, spending a month on loan with Hartlepool in 2004/05.

After the Whites, for whom he had made only one senior sub appearance, dropped out of the top flight he moved on to Sunderland, where he made two starts and six sub appearances, before joining Rotherham on a free in the summer of 2007.

A year later Woods, who has been capped by Scotland at U17, U19 and U21 levels, moved on to Doncaster, where he played under current Bristol City boss Sean O'Driscoll, and aside from a month on loan at Yeovil in 2008 he remained there until his release this summer.

linked with 2 of his former managers. They may have an idea of his potential, if fit, which most others will never have seen

Never seen someone injured for 3 years with a groin injury but i trust Mick's judgement. Really need some creative midfielders and wingers now though.

Orthodontic approach! Does he have teeth problems as well as groin? :-))

Assuming that Phil meant 'Orthopedic' there!

Sort your teeth out and the rest of your body is perfectly aligned

BrightBlue - orthodontic approach is used for assessment of many kinds of asymmetries - often skeletal asymmetries, and not only dental... ;)
What is worrying is that is probably a long lasting injury (or set of injuries). I've seen the lad play a few times for Doncaster, seemed more than decent...

itfcserbia .... You're clearly a switched on cookie. You're putting us 'thickies' to shame.

He's got the chance to join for pre-season, but he's not out of the woods yet..

Dental records are one of the first thing top European clubs check on a player ,before even offering a medical . If two previous managers want him then offer pay as you play contract

Er...
Cash might be short but a we reduced to this!? Bloody hell!

ME you must have some cash for MM this summer!? If not woe betide you! A tiny bit if cash investment now is a must. Plenty of worthy, decent players at clubs with one year left on their contract and with clubs clambering to abide my FFS surely we can be a bit more prudent in the market!?

What's happened to the forrestor link? This one can not pass us by!! Tired of missing out on promising players of this ilk...

Get a grip Keaneish. He's a free agent and Mick has worked with him before, no harm having a look.

Keaneish is right on this one,a very ordinary player plus he is a sick note

Yeah you're right Kesgrave, Mick hasn't got a clue, we're in a much better position to judge using wikipedia and google...

Im just slightly concerned that currently we only seem to be signing midfielders, when we still need at least one goalkeeper and a few defenders

Following on from Keaneish point that MM not being given money to spend ,have heard a rumour MM has been seen at DW stadium

Saw Forrestor at Wembley and he was very average. Certainly no better than Martin.

Get a grip people....

Reported to have offered a trial is not 'signed another midfielder' and even if the boy impresses and gets a contract I'm sure it'll be on merit where MM is concerned

You all want us to unearth some hidden gems... Then complain you haven't heard of anyone we're linked to (again this is not signing someone, just journalists with nothing else to talk about in the summer)

You all so busy with the doom and gloom and wanting to be the first to say I told you so, seriously .....be grateful we're not Wolves fans?.....

Te sound of the barrel being scrapped gets louder by the week. I know te club said that MM would have to rely upon out of contract players (freebies) but if we are scrabbling about at this level, then MM will have his work cut out to keep us much above the bottom three. Any wonder the club are not releasing the season ticket sales - most have taken to the hills.

I'm sure everyone here is as desperate as me to hear his opinion on our training facilities.

Theres nothing wrong with having a look but how many trialists have ever amounted to anything at Town? I can't remember any. Agree with Harry10, there's a definite feel of barrel scraping at the moment. Still, plenty of the transfer window left....

At 27 not too old to recover from long term injury. Many top players have had their own "achilles heel" type injuries until modern methods came along and fixed them. Well worth a look with nothing to lose,
