Ainsworth: A Few Clubs After Grant
Friday, 21st Jun 2013 20:19

Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth says Town target Joel Grant is interesting a number of clubs with his Adams Park contract up at the end of the month. The Blues are understood to have offered the winger a deal.

Ainsworth says the 25-year-old is still considering his options: "He’s taking his time. There’s obviously a few clubs talking to Joel and we’ll see what happens.

"If he signs here, fantastic. If he moves to a higher club and a higher division then we’ve all got to be proud of what we did at Wycombe.

“If that happens, it’s up to us to replace him and get the best out of something else, that’s football, especially in the lower leagues. When Joel’s ready, he’ll let us know."

I really hope he signs for us, got some skills, pace, has scored goals from the wings, jus what we need!! You never know as coming from lower league's but def worth a go - we need a player where when they get on the ball everyone thinks something good could happen here!

It's nice to be linked and offer terms to these sort of players nowadays. You hear of other clubs be linked to players that supporters know that are doing well in the leagues below and wish we'd take a chance. Adam Le Fondre come's to mind. Spent 3-4 years playing for rotherham scoring goals. Reading sign him for £250k! Players we have signed or been linked in the past 5-6 years have cost millions of pounds from the premiership, to take step down. We now seem to be linked wih players who have a motivation to do well and better themselves! And it's teriffic!

Lukeybluey spot on with your comments.
i think given we are short on the wing he would be daft to go somewhere else in the championship to sit on the bench.
hopefully we can get him as he looks a lively player

If we get him then let's see what he can do. If We don't , its not going to make a lot of difference imo

I hate to sound pessimistic but, the guy is nearly 26 and was released by Crewe in 2011 - is he right for us? In comparison to Carson & Martin does he offer us any more? It's make or break for this player.
Personally I feel there are better and younger players out there.
But in Mick I trust.

mr evans i totally agree!...but are there any better players out there who fit in with our wage structure and who we dont have to a pay fee for?...now those would be very few and far between.

We are, I feel going to have to get used to having freebies, who maybe are not quite as good as we need...i sincerely hope not of course and Mick unearths a few diamonds for us.

...... far too many fans / supporters suck up to these players, only helping them to become even bigger prima dona's - they are doing a job (just like MOST of us are) - and being paid EXTREMELY well for doing just that.

Do we really need to make them into something they are not - but I suppose some always will - for obvious reasons.

agre we should not suck up to them in a cringy way but we shoul support them encourage them even when the y make a mistake
too many fans are too quick to critisise.
encouragment of palyers has not made chambers or smith or hyam etc big headed they have just thanked fans and got on with there with a bit more confidence.
certain players may let it go to thier heads but it up to mick to assess there charecter before signing them.
sometimes a bit if arrogance in a winger is a good thing
and also if I was him i too would want to know exactly who was offering what before i make a decision.
i hope he chooses us as think he will get ball into the box and as a defender myself there is nothing worse than balls coming in from the wing

h32, I think that you are being too hard on the lad. He is 25 years old. His career may last until his early/mid thirties. This is a big move for him. It is only sensible that he takes a bit of time to think it through and weigh up his options. If I was going for a new job and had two or three employers after me then I would do the same thing.

I think we should take comfort from the fact that Mick McCarthy's scouting network pay very particular attention to a players character before they go after any player. Its not all about footballing skills.

If we have an initial interest in a player but then fail to pursue it , I'd say there are reasons for it other than the usual offered excuse by the fans and so called local media, of "we cant afford" it. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one significant signing that does cost a few bob. Not every player we sign has to cost millions.
