Derby Confirm McClaren Appointment
Monday, 30th Sep 2013 17:48

Tuesday’s opponents Derby County have confirmed that former England boss Steve McClaren will take over as head coach on Wednesday after he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract.

McClaren will watch tomorrow’s game from the stands with academy manager Darren Wassell in charge against the Blues.

One-time Shrewsbury and Stockport boss Paul Simpson has been named the Rams' new first team coach and ex-Manchester United keeper-coach Eric Steele has also joined McClaren's staff.

Starting on Wednesday gives McClaren all tomorrow to lose his 'Dutch' accent and perfect his new Derbyshire twang!!

Following this news, I'll be more than happy with a point from this game. Tunni to score for us.

Derby are muppets for getting rid of Clough. Was doing a good job on low budget.Bringing in MacLaren - what has he done apart from the dutch team he won the title with (FC Twente?) They deserve F*** all. IMO.

This appointment stinks. Clough sacked on a Saturday and McClaren appointed on the Monday!!?
McClaren that desperate to get back into football he'd take this on and after just managing their bitter rivals?

That smiley face is a bit of a facade if you ask me. If the Derby fans were shocked at the sacking of Clough then they must be even more shocked at the appointment of McClaren within 48 hours!

If i were Derby fans i'd be asking serious questions of the board.

Glad i'm not a Derby fan right now. To sack a man popular with the fans who plays decent football for an absolute donkey is not a good idea.

He's not in charge, no, but will be watching from the stands, with the players keen to impress him.

With the life of a footbal fan being largely ruled by emotion, this article on the BBC website - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23724517 - is worth a read 'Does it make statistical sense to sack a football manager?'

Basically, research seems to bear out that teams that sack a manager get a short term boost in results before regressing to the mean. This is a common phenomenon known as the 'Paul Jewell effect' (previously the 'Roy Keane effect').

Not great news but we've got a good experienced team- keep them quiet for the first 20minutes of each half and we'll be OK.
Don't think I have seen us lose at Derby since Eddie Youds debut in 91. I'm too old for this caper can anyone explain why I'm going tomorrow night?

Forget about what's going on behind closed doors, it's 11v11 and we are due an away win, McGoldrick due an away goal too.

This could go two ways.

They could play out of their skins to impress the new manager in waiting, or,

They could try too hard or be afraid of making a mistake and play badly. I hope its the latter! I got relatives with Derby season tickets!

Too late to make an impact for tomorrows game? it's usually about the players mentality and getting off to a 'fresh start' and impressing him which impacts the team rather than the managers tactics/ethics or what ever you want to call it - but as said we're due a win and we have a good record their so fingers crossed.
