McCarthy Speculation Continues in Irish Press
Monday, 21st Oct 2013 10:15

Speculation regarding Mick McCarthy and the vacant Ireland manager’s job continues apace in the Irish press this morning.

The Irish Independent claims the FAI have set an annual budget of €1.2 million (just over £1 million) to fund the wages of Giovanni Trapattoni’s successor, with billionaire businessman Denis O’Brien again understood to be helping to finance the appointment.

However, it’s said that any compensation which would be payable to Town for McCarthy, or to another club should their boss be the man they want, would come from that figure.

How much Town would want for McCarthy, who is contracted until June 2015, is unknown but it’s claimed it would be somewhere between €500,000 and €1 million.

An Ireland player is also said to have been told that McCarthy is the frontrunner by an FAI official last week: "The impression from the conversation was clear — that Mick will get the job."

Meanwhile, the FAI’s headhunters, Ray Houghton and Ruud Dokter, are reportedly going through a short-list of candidates, which is believed to include the likes of Hector Cuper, Walter Zenga, Alex McLeish, Dick Advocaat and Carlos Quieroz, while it’s claimed two Premier League bosses have been contacted but are no longer being considered for the job.

Elsewhere, it’s reported that initial favourite Martin O’Neill will pull out of the race this week, having opted against taking the role which seemed his a month ago and that the FAI will make an approach to Town regarding McCarthy this week offering €500,000 in compensation.

I totally agree with your comments blueboy 1981 but I think Mick Mills has been out of the managerial scene for far too long and Matty would be a great asset to the club with a good manager with him!

I am afraid the whole ethos of the club has totally changed in recent years and they are no longer the "family club " they once were.
It unfortunately has become a business and I am concerned that attendances will continue to fall if we don't improve and appoint well next time. How depressing!

Agreed Elizabeth - I just feel that Mick Mills knowledge of the game would more than make up for the time he has been out of Management, and he never really had decent crack at it anyway.

Would just love to see Mick Mills / Matty Holland working together as a Management Team at ITFC.
Loyalty would never need to be questioned - and these two would bring people through the turnstiles again.

I would put money on them being successful on both Club, and Team fronts.

Blue boy

Sadly, bleeding blue blood isn't enough for some. Thus legends like George and Jim lost critical support among some fans when results weren't as good as they might have been. It's not just here. It seems that fan pressure has forced Tony Mowbray out at Middlesbrough and history is littered with similar examples eg Billy Bonds / Harry Redknapp at WHU, Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool, Ossie Ardiles at Spurs, Joe Royle at Everton etc, etc, etc. Maybe it's better to be free of the shackles of historic loyalty/affiliation to a club and manage dispassionately without fear or favour. Those that accuse MM of disloyalty to ITFC in this affair are are being unfair and unrealistic.

As a final example our own Bobby Robson was a playing legend at Fulham, but couldn't hack it as a manager with them. He became a managerial legend with us but his lifelong accumulation of knowledge, experience, peer respect and general widespread admiration throughout the game, did not save him from the sack at his spiritual home at Newcastle.

As BC famously said- if football was made to be played in the air, there would be grass on it..

I think we all realise that this is causing unrest at the club and Tommy Smith has publicly spoken about this so it proves that it is getting to the players. Mick has done a wonderful job with us. Kept us up when we looked certain for Relegation and we haven't started this season badly in my eyes. However the 4-4-2 formation and defensive approach needs to go. We have a damn good squad and if the right manager comes in (IF MICK GOES) he will have to be a manager who can play that attacking side to entertain and win games but also be able to keep solid and i personally feel that Nigel Clough is that man. He will get our back line up to scratch again and im sure he will play a style and formation that will spice it up and make us deadly going forward. HOWEVER Mick has not gone but thats what i would do if he does. The thing is Mick is dragging this along saying 'MAYBE I JUST WANT TO BE ASKED'. NO manager would say that if they didn't want the job tbh, i think we all no that.

Keanesh- I think you're in the minority mate! And choosing a name akin to Roy (Who is incidentally a step down from MM) is interesting...

Keanish- you say how the championship is a lottery, you've got to be hard to beat and play safe etc... How do you explain Burnley's success? Pass and move play, hard to break down- premiership stuff, but on a budget- and without their previous target man. .... Now how come they can do this and not us... I wonder

If Mick goes I'll be hoping that Tony Mowbray and Mark Venus take over. Having a former skipper at the club who played under Burley would be really positive.
Burley played under the best manager ever in Sir Bobby and George had a legendary spell as our manager.
Who's to say that the same thing might happen with Mowbray?
Last three managers had no prior connection with Town and haven't got us promoted, time to try someone who is town through and through.

Ha! I knew it Walk the wark!! Using Barcelona and Arsenal as a footballing reference for how you expect a championship side to play. Get real fella, you're living in cloud cuckoo land...
If you think i'm in the minority wanting MM and TC to stay you're more out of touch with this club than i thought.

Blueboy - Mick Mills to manage in place of Mick McCarthy?? Based on what? Stabbing in the dark. You cant just pick ipswich and ipswich and hope they form a good managerial understanding. Mick Mills last time in management was very mediocre at best. Terry Butcher would be a better shout if your hell bent on getting rid of a very solid managerial reign in MM and TC for no reason...

There are certain parallels in our situation as compared with Spurs when the England job last came up. Harry made it clear he wanted it, but expected the approach to come from the FA. In the end the FA offered the job to Roy H and Harry was left in limbo at Spurs and ended up getting the elbow. In the eyes of a fan living in the UK the Ireland job is no where as prestigious, or as well paid, as the England job but MM was obviously proud to do it before and clearly believed that the opportunity to do it again might be on the cards. Why else would he have had the release clause in his original Ipswich contract?

Now that this possibility is looming, I think it is unrealistic to expect MM to rule himself out before any formal approach by the FAI is made and while I can understand the wails of despair from certain quarters that he is not being fair to the club, the players and supporters by not definitively ruling himself in, or out, of consideration, I can equally understand his wish to play the waiting game. Of course this strategy might be a risky one (as Harry ultimately discovered) and judging by certain comments on here things are never going to be the same now whatever the outcome. There is a trenchant view of opinion on here which is rising day by day which is anti MM which we saw with JM, RK & PJ none of whom were able to reverse. I find it so depressing!

Elizabeth. agree with a lot u say but you really must realise that in this day and age every club in the land must be run as a business. if we were to go back to the ideals of the cobbold era and run itfc purely as a family club then we would disappear from existence. sad, but true im afraid.

It's not so much the footballing side that would be missed if Mick goes...it's the man management side. That is what the players have responded so well to in my opinion..they haven't necessarily become better players. The next manager would have to be a similar man to maintain the standards we have reached, especially in defence.
