Hunt Especially Delighted With Debut Win
Wednesday, 13th Nov 2013 11:01

New Blues signing Stephen Hunt was happier than anyone with Town’s 3-2 win at Blackpool, feeling that he was treated “unfairly” by the Seasiders when he came close to joining them earlier in the season.

Debutant sub Hunt celebrated Daryl Murphy’s late, late winner in style and, speaking in an interview with Irish radio station Newstalk 106 (26mins, 25secs), he explained why: “I was excited going to Blackpool where I was unfairly treated, I wasn’t treated nice by them. That gave me a bigger incentive.

“If anyone has seen the goal celebrations, I was like a raving lunatic when we scored the third goal. I jumped about four or five foot in the air and it was directly pointed at the chairman [Karl Oyston] because he was the main one who didn’t treat me well. I was delighted to get the three points.”

On reflection, the 32-year-old says it was probably a good thing that Tangerines defender Gary MacKenzie headed his goalbound injury time shot over the bar moments before Murphy's winner.

“If that had gone in I would probably have been sent off,” he added. “I’d been booked on the halfway line and my goal celebration would have been something else!”

Having impressed in a trial, Hunt looked set to join Blackpool in September but the deal broke down with manager Paul Ince citing the Ireland international’s wage requirements: "The demands he wanted were just ridiculous for someone who had only played the last 10 games at Wolves.

"Myself and the chairman said we weren't prepared to pay that amount of money for someone who's been injured for quite a while and was coming here to show me his fitness.

"Don't get me wrong, he's a lovely lad and a good kid, but if those demands had been a little bit lower, we'd have done the deal four or five weeks ago."

Hunt, who previously played for boss Mick McCarthy at Molineux, joined Town on a two-month play-to-be-paid deal on Friday.

Gives us lots of width and is a very useful player on his day. Also adds experience to the squad so can only be a benefit. If he does well I can see us signing him until the end of the season. In the match highlights for Saturday you can see him going mental after the last 2 goals haha

His celebration was top class, you can see he just wants to play and his wages can't be as ridiculous as ince is making out otherwise he wouldn't be here.

If you want to settle in quickly at a new place and gain a rapport with the fans, then his celebration on the 3rd goal is a good way to start! I moaned when he signed, but if he can show that passion to win and stay fit then he's a very useful squad player.

I'd prefer he was celebrating because we'd won the game rather than a personal feud with Oyston. Fine if he felt that way, but don't talk about it afterwards, these things come back to bite you, don't they Chops?

The main thing I noticed about that goal was his celebration......love the passion already it's exactly what we need!

love him! What i really liked was when MM said i stuck him on at left back, he has never played there but i knew he would do a job - and he did! blackpools loss could be our gain and if he does well hopefully he will get a deal to end of season. lets hope he shows same commitment against Leicester though and that it wasnt just aimed at Blackpool!

Talk is cheap in football. I seem to remember us being interested in him much earlier in the season, although not offering him a deal (although not officially disclosed I expect also on the grounds of his extravagant wage demands). I can't help but get the feeling he only signed for us on his current deal as there was nothing else available to him, and some income is better than no income. I hope he is not using us just to get a big deal elsewhere, or to sign permanently and then put in no effort ala Jimmy Bullard. I hope for all our sakes he proves me wrong, time will tell.

He did infact admit he had been demanding a lot the day he signed for us. Hopefully he'll be an asset to the team now he is here regardless of pay issues!!

Not sure about this fella off the pitch, but have always liked his tenacity on it. Think this short term contract is ideal, and see how we go.

How much would Hunt get payed on pay as you play deal...£5k a match plus bonuses? Thats a big drop from the reportedly £32k a week he was on at Wolves plus he's prepared to play in the development squad matches as well so short term loan is quite good business!
