Edwards: I Want to Manage Town
Friday, 24th Jan 2014 06:00

His short-term future may be up in the air but Carlos Edwards is making no secret of his long-term ambition — he wants to manage Town!

Edwards has already taken the first steps towards a career in coaching and would like nothing more than to be a successful boss at Portman Road, even revealing the identity of his likely right hand man.

He said: “I’ve been putting things in place for coaching. It’s best that I start now, while I’m still playing. It’s better — and easier — that way and I’m waiting to hear back from the FA about it. One or two of the other players, Christophe Berra and Luke Chambers, are also looking to get started.

“We might be idols to the young kids while we are still playing but I think we still have a lot to offer after we retire. I would love to be a part of the history of the club and, who knows, I could be manager of Ipswich one day.

“I love Suffolk and I would never say never. You just never know what can happen and I am obviously keeping all my options open. One day someone, the owner or whoever, might want to offer Mr Edwards the job. If I get it I’ll have to bring in Jason Scotland as my assistant.”

But the experienced winger or full-back, out of contract in the summer, knows he is gazing quite a few years into the future and accepts he will first have to serve his apprenticeship as a coach, something he is keen to kick-start as soon as possible.

Ideally, he would like to take his first steps by joining the Portman Road academy staff alongside other ex-players like Gerard Nash, Kieron Dyer, James Scowcroft, Jason Dozzell and Alan Lee.

He added: “Both Bryan Klug and Mark Kennedy have been encouraging me and I also had a word with Dwight Yorke, who has started his UEFA badges. He said it was a good idea but also that it was a long process and that it would be best to get started now. It’s not often I take advice from him!”

Are you kidding me? He hasn't got the ability to lead us as captain let alone as a manager! Never in a million years will he manage town!

Edwards as manager, fine, but Scotland as assistant would be too laid back!!! Need a more experienced man alongside him.

This is completely tongue in cheek! Ignore it.

Jesus christ he has clearly made this comment lightly and is merely expressing his love for the club and dreams of management. One tounge in cheek comment and people are taking it as def info and moaning that Jason Scotland isn't the man for his number two.

I also love how people make assumptions of what Jason Scotland's personality is.

Unbelievable.

For what it's worth- I think Carlos has a lot of the qualities needed to have a career in the game after retiring from playing

Wouldn't throw the idea out totally. They'd have the team playing with a smile on their face and that makes a world of difference.

Well said RoyKeane's Dog: What is wrong with saying "I would love to manage Town"? DOesn't mean he will. Doesn't mean he would be either good or bad. Just means he loves the club and the area. After the revolving door of the last 5 years (MacAuley, Norris, Leadbitter, Bullard, Martin, Nigel Real Choker, to name but a few), how nice to hear some players that love our club and want to stay. Last time we had a number of players with this mind set for me was back in the days of Naylor, Wilnis, de Vos etc..

If all those minuses against me think that Carlos Edwards is a good skipper you are all mental.
Can anyone tell me what he offers as a Skipper? Chambers is far better.
