Town in Running for Gunning?
Wednesday, 12th Mar 2014 10:24

Town are reported to be keeping tabs on Dundee United central defender Gavin Gunning.

According to the Dundee Evening Telegraph, the 23-year-old, who was previously linked with the Blues in the summer of 2012, is also believed to be interesting Italian side Palermo, as well as Rangers and Celtic, with his contract at Tannadice up in the summer.

Dubliner Gunning played youth football with St Joseph’s Boys Club and Crumlin United before moving to England and joining the Blackburn Rovers academy in 2006.

The 6ft 2in tall centre-half or left-back subsequently went out on loan to Tranmere, Rotherham, Bury and Motherwell but failed to make a senior appearance for the Ewood Park club.

The former Republic of Ireland U21 international signed for Dundee United in the summer of 2012, turning down Aberdeen, former loan side Motherwell and Scunthorpe, and since moving to Tannidice he has made 83 starts and three sub appearances, scoring 10 goals.

Surely we dont need another left footed centre half? We already have 3.

I think the key words are "keeping tabs on". Yes we do have 3 left footed defenders but Berra is on a short contract, Smith may attract attention from other clubs and Mings is primarily a full-back and as yet unproven. It would be surprising therefore if the club weren't "keeping tabs on" a number of possible alternatives if needed.

Decent player, but our current back 4 are actually very good. Would argue we need creativity and goals in the midfield and another striker to play alongside mcGoldrick. Oh, and both keepers are average at best!

If we are aiming for the play offs and promotion I would hope we are 'keeping tabs' on another 20 players at least ! but focusing on our Academy boys first !!

We may have a great back four but we need a great squad of players vying for those places. We can't not sign someone because our starting line up is strong enough in that area. We have no long term alternatives if Smith, Berra, Mings or Cresswell gets injured. It'll be great to have the kind of depth in the squad that MM wants in order to keep up with the growing number of rich Championship clubs with huge squads.

One imagines we are keeping tabbs on numerous players at this stage, it would be most deliqiuent not to have an idea of who maybe avialble, especially on frees. Town always get linked with an entire new teams worth of players every season anyway.

My feeling would be that if we are looking at defenders a RWB is main priority. Also think we should prepare ourselves for Cressies moving, I think we will do really well to hold onto him this summer. Shaw to a big club would leave a huge hole at LB for them and any prem club looking for one must have him in mind, so perhaps we should be keeping Tabbs on some Lb's aswell? Having said all that, I really hope he stays.

Cressie warrents at least 6 million plus a huge sell on clause and various others surely?

Really a CB we have 3 good ones in Chambers, Smith and Berra. Mings can also play there, why not try and improve our Midfield which is where we need improving, or re-call Hewitt for RB and actually try Chambers in CB if MM thinks we need another 1

Is it all part of the plan to have us renamed as Ipswich Sinisters?

Yes we do need players in other positions but that doesn't mean MM shouldn't try build up a squad and not just a first eleven. Plus this guy might be better than our current CB??
If this link is true then I think I will just trust that MM knows what he is doing.

Can play left back, offers in for Cresswell?

I suppose it depends on what happens in the summer, Tommy may attract an offer, and personally i think Chambers may be knocking on the door at some stage to point out he's spent a season at full back but thats enough, he'd like to play inside, 3 into 2 doesnt go so one may go and leave a gap to cover, we'll see but if Mick stil doesnt trust Hewitt for next year we have to get a right back in

we should have some senior back up but mainly have a strong 16 and use our academy players who never seem to get a proper chance before being released or let go for sod all.
tom eastman is now playing superbly we should have kept him not to mention rhodes upson and trotter-if we dont give them a chance we will never know how good they are.
blueandwhitebadger im not sure about trusting micks judgment he did bring in tabb and nouble and plays them every week

We will sell Cresswell move Smith to left back and two full backs out of position!!!!!!!

Oh well done thanks for the minus.
No, I don't want us to lose Cresswell, but if we are sniffing around a player who can play in that position, and we seem to have the centre backs places sorted, we either need back up for Mings who would replace Cresswell or a direct replcement for him.
If Cresswell has any ambition in him does anyone on here actually think he would turn down the chance of Premiership football to stay at PR if a good club came in for him.
Mind you we could always stick a right sided player in, might balance Berra up.

We are not the only ones looking at him. I don't see him coming here with those other clubs interested.
