Patterson Nets Twice
Tuesday, 6th May 2014 09:34

Academy midfielder Monty Patterson was on target twice as New Zealand’s U20s beat Fiji 4-1 in a friendly in Auckland this morning.

Patterson, who starts a two-year scholarship at Playford Road in July, netted a freekick in the 23rd minute, then converted a penalty after he had been fouled in the area six minutes later to put his side two goals in front at the break.

On Sunday, the 17-year-old was amongst the scorers as the New Zealand youngsters beat the same opposition 5-0 in another friendly.

The Junior All Whites play Papua New Guinea in the last of this week’s three friendlies on Thursday. The games are part of New Zealand's early preparations for the 2015 U20 World Cup which they are hosting.

Let's not jizz ourselves too much over this lad just yet. Let's just remember who the opposition are - I doubt they're much better than a lot of the teams competing in the SIL most weekends.

That said, he is only 17 years old, and does sound like quite a talent. Lets have a look at how he gets on in our U21 team first of all and maybe even give him an opportunity in one or two pre-season friendlies. Then we'll have a better idea quite how good this lad is.
