Wordsworth Available as Ambrose Joins in Training
Thursday, 21st Aug 2014 14:06

Town boss Mick McCarthy has made midfielder Anthony Wordsworth available for loan or permanent move. Meanwhile, ex-Blue Darren Ambrose is training back at Playford Road.

McCarthy told the club site: “I have spoken to Woody and he’s available now to go out on loan or to join a club permanently. He needs to be out there playing games.”

Wordsworth joined Town from Colchester in January 2013 but has never established himself as a regular in the side, making only 10 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring twice.

The 25-year-old was close to a loan move to Preston North End midway through last season.

McCarthy says free agent Ambrose, who was released by Birmingham at the end of last season following a loan spell with Greek side Apollon Smyrni, is simply training with the squad at present.

“It’s not a trial or anything like that,” he said. “It’s just like Jack Collison, who is also with us.

“Darren asked if he can train with us. We’re happy to let him do that but it’s no more than that.”

Ambrose, who moved to West Suffolk earlier in the summer, played for Colchester against the Blues in pre-season.

The 30-year-old came through the Town academy and made his senior debut at Arsenal close to the end of the Blues' 2001/02 Premier League campaign.

After establishing himself in the Town side after relegation he was sold less than a year later to Newcastle for £1 million as the club sought to raise cash having gone into administration.

The Harlow-born midfielder subsequently moved to Charlton before rejoining the Blues for two months on loan during the 2008/09 season but failed to win a permanent deal.

A spell with Crystal Palace followed before he joined Birmingham in July 2012.

Elsewhere, former Blues striker Michael Chopra has joined the Kerala Blasters in the new Indian Super League, a club owned by batting legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Blackburn Rovers have confirmed that they have received an offer from Premier League Hull City for another ex-Town striker, Jordan Rhodes.

@Peek - from Midfield upwards other than McG very little!, efficient enough players with good work ethic and fairly organised but when it comes down to touch, fast passing, creativeness not much. Anderson (at times tries to create).

Not saying Wordsworth was a great player by any stretch, but he was the one of our only midfielders who got up and supported our strikers when he played.

Am I the only who thinks we are shockingly short of midfielder who can score 5-10 goal's a season???!

If we don't get one in either permanently or on loan for season, we can forget playoffs.

Collison isn't the answer, gods sake he's just a clone of hyam and skuse!

I fully support Mick, but must admit tad worried at lack of flair in squad or goalscorers, can't rely on central defender's to back strikers up over 46 games!

Disappointed with this, i think with Hyam as the more defensive minded midfielder and wordsworth as the not even attacking, more of an all round centre mid that would have worked perfectly. I really dont rate Skuse, for him to play the way he does he needs to complete nearly every pass he makes which he cant do, gives the ball away far too often which will cost us.

We were told there was money available from Cresswell sell, why the mass clear out after the season started? The squad is far weaker than last year hence Tabby has started every game . If we did not want to sign players early summer to avoid paying wages as stated by MM why did we pay wages for Nouble, Woody only to release them after paying them the summer ? Poor management and many contradictions coming out of the club over whole summer

What the fxck is McCarthy up to, the man is not good enough to manage a Sunday League pub team but we've got the prat for another 3 years.

Don't get me wrong, he hasn't set the world a light but he is definitely more creative than Skuse and Hyam. Would of been nice to see him in the centre with hyam. Fed up of seeing two defensive midfielders together. Can't help but feel all Skuse offers is some sideways and backward passing at a very slow pace.
Let's hope big mick has a trick up his sleeve as our squad is looking very thin with very few creative players. HardWork can only get you a certain somewhere I'm afraid.

??? Strange decision, Wordsworth is the only player we got in the squad who looks like he can actually play football. I guess the fact that he isn't 6'5 and cut out fir rugby must count against him. Jeez the squad mick has put together reminds me of a rubbish stoke city from a few years back!! Still if we can get promoted by chasing lost causes and harrying defenders I guess that will be nice?!

Ambrose has goals in him, he was great for Palace 2seasons ago, has he still got it? Let's hope so. Collision is quality, tough & likes to get forward, does he have a dodgy knee? Let's hope not. Wordsworth not really done it & haven't seen enough of him to know if he has what it takes at this level. Either way sounds like Mick is planning on some changes to the squad, let's hope we are not under whelmed! Whatever happens that midfield needs goals if we are to even sniff the play-offs.

Shock horror, A another Creative player cut lose, who has never really been given a fair run in the team. I ask you this, Is he any worse then Tabb and Skuse? every week we see poor performance by these two, not a bad word said, MM has his favourites, getting bored with the whole defensive physical approach, yes he done a great job keeping us up, we need move on from that, Look at the likes Of Bournemouth Eddie Howe, playing attractive football, Millwall have started well, Holloway is working his Magic there. Just hope he has same creative players lined up.

Woody is good but he is only a back up part of the squad. Football is his livelihood so it is more than likely that he has forced this situation. MM is right; he needs to play football. It's all very well some posters thinking he could do a better job than Cole but MM doesn't, and with all due respect it's his opinion that counts. We all want a chance of doing well this season; to achieve this we need the best players available. The general consensus is that we need creativity in midfield. A new creative midfielder may or not materialise but from MM's point of view Woody is not the answer and it would not surprise me if the player himself knows, understands, and accepts this fact and wants to move on.

@Surco - my point made earlier, we seem to currently want to release players or at least send them out on loan on top of the earlier summer exits and save further wage payments and I thought the club mentioned that the sale of Cresswell would aid the wages, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know more have gone out/going out than coming in . The Bru/Bajner signings would both be on relatively lower wages I would have thought, so whats going to happen to the Cresswell money? Some (plural) Premiership loan players coming in? - something fishy still going on at this club.

My god we have played three league games and have 4 points and the second team got knocked out of a crap cup competition. 4 games in and you are calling for MM's head. He must read this and laugh. What do you moan about in the summer the price of strawberries at Tesco??
I GUARANTEE if we win Saturday MM will be the best thing since sliced bread.

tractorkent added 20:38 - Aug 21
the only creative spark we have and Mick {i.m going to do it my way} makes him available .Which only enforces the fact that MM prefers players who run around and tackle than a player who can create.I am geting so down about our style of play, no wonder we are seen now as a boring team with a boring manager.

Boring Billy strikes again, now if he was more like Hyam and ran around like a headless chicken he would be second name on the team sheet

Maybe
Wordsworth went to Mick and said I don't want to be here any more?

Players have the power to do what they want, what ever it says on the contract
Every week you hear of one that will not train / play for his club because they will not give him a transfer.

From what I have seen of this league games are won and lost by being overrun in midfield so you have to have players that will cover and track back, maybe that's just not his style of play.

Something tell me things are not as cosy at the club as some players make out, MM shipping players out and no sign of new ones replacing them and the squad gets thinner and thinner very strange especial when he was supposed to be getting some of Creswell money for players wages. Someone either balancing the books for another high paid player or our accountants getting worried either way doesn't look good at all unless magic Mick got an ace card to play tomorrow,

I would be more than happy if we signed collison, Garvan and ambrose. They are all great players who have good experience of the game. Plus they would be free transfers.

Coey118,

They are all yesterday's men; unlikely to drive us forward. Yes, they are all good footballers but a player needs to offer clubs like ours more than basic skill. That none of them is being chased by other clubs at our level tells you all you need to know. Signing any of them would be a gamble. MM's job is to ensure that any new players improve the overall quality of the squad. Sadly in each case this would be arguable if looking long term.

Have seen several games including pre sesaon friendlies,Fulham and called in at Reading on Saturday coming back from Wales.
Was hopeful of good season but optimism started to wain a little already.
Doherty £20k already gone and Nouble £25k plus Wordsworth £100k available. These are the only three which has cost a transfer fee since MM took over!
He is still setting teams up not to lose away from home at least, and seems to be more critical of defensive errors than lack of scoring or creativity in midfield.
Our leading scorer Berra is an outstanding player but others not good enough to win promotion.Gerken not good enough 3 mistakes on Tuesday.Murphy looks out of sorts, and no one worse than lethargic Skuse, responsible for 2nd goal who I fear is carrying an injury.Tabby was the only player praised by Manager after Reading game !!!Their Manager likening team to Land of Giants.Talking of which Bajner is now at his 9th club in 6 countries,as is Bru (including loans).Does Marcus Evans really think any Manager can mould a team mostly from journeymen and those who are without a club, and hope to achieve anything!
The one bright spark is Henshall, who Mick has already criticised for one defensive frailty;but will he be able to displace favourite Tabby.I fear not but hope that McCarthy will set his team up to try and win on Saturday and not simply try and negate Norwich.
Please also dont tell us how tough it will be on Saturday and boost the Canaries,as you will give us all an inferiority complex!
