Wordsworth Available as Ambrose Joins in Training
Thursday, 21st Aug 2014 14:06

Town boss Mick McCarthy has made midfielder Anthony Wordsworth available for loan or permanent move. Meanwhile, ex-Blue Darren Ambrose is training back at Playford Road.

McCarthy told the club site: “I have spoken to Woody and he’s available now to go out on loan or to join a club permanently. He needs to be out there playing games.”

Wordsworth joined Town from Colchester in January 2013 but has never established himself as a regular in the side, making only 10 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring twice.

The 25-year-old was close to a loan move to Preston North End midway through last season.

McCarthy says free agent Ambrose, who was released by Birmingham at the end of last season following a loan spell with Greek side Apollon Smyrni, is simply training with the squad at present.

“It’s not a trial or anything like that,” he said. “It’s just like Jack Collison, who is also with us.

“Darren asked if he can train with us. We’re happy to let him do that but it’s no more than that.”

Ambrose, who moved to West Suffolk earlier in the summer, played for Colchester against the Blues in pre-season.

The 30-year-old came through the Town academy and made his senior debut at Arsenal close to the end of the Blues' 2001/02 Premier League campaign.

After establishing himself in the Town side after relegation he was sold less than a year later to Newcastle for £1 million as the club sought to raise cash having gone into administration.

The Harlow-born midfielder subsequently moved to Charlton before rejoining the Blues for two months on loan during the 2008/09 season but failed to win a permanent deal.

A spell with Crystal Palace followed before he joined Birmingham in July 2012.

Elsewhere, former Blues striker Michael Chopra has joined the Kerala Blasters in the new Indian Super League, a club owned by batting legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Blackburn Rovers have confirmed that they have received an offer from Premier League Hull City for another ex-Town striker, Jordan Rhodes.

...and it's a no for Ambrose, been out with injuries for the last couple of years and past his best.

Think Jonny Williams is injured, that's why he wasn't on the bench at the weekend.

Correct decision for me. He has had plenty of chances but he needed to show far more energy for MM. Crawley was the last straw for me as he had the chance to shine and he completely blew it with a very negative display. Will free up more wages but not to spend on Ambrose I hope as he will never be the player he was.

@peak - yeah mind and body but without the quality...

Mick has made no secret of the fact that as soon as the PL teams name their squads he hopes to bring some of those into the club.MM has given these guys a good chance but clearly he has a cunning plan - sign up Baldrick?

Another player not good enough for us. He will not end up at another Championship club. At last MM is cutting out the dead wood....

I hear we are in for a couple of forwards from Hull - - - - - Hull Kingston Rovers that is they're big, threatening and run around a lot.

Seems as if we will sign Collison then

Now to sell McGoldrick so we then have no creativity. This has not pleased me at all. He's our best passer, and however much I like McCarthy, I do think he needs to realise that we need an attacking midfielder...

Don't think Col U fans will be surprised by this ,they said he was a "sick note " as already been said the worrying thing is , they are players M. M signed and they cost us money ,

MM must have just realised we haven't got enough physical presence to out muscle teams. MM is the new Pullis and we are a poor Stoke look a like team.

(unfortunately we are giving away as many goals at set pieces as we are scoring.)

Really upset, never gave wordsmith a chance or a proper run of games. Only Taylor and wordsmith had any creative flair and he wants rid of them both. Not happy at all.

Not at all happy with this. He's literally the only midfield player we have with an ounce of creativity. How players like Skuse and Tabb get away with mediocre performances is beyond me. Fed up of it.

must be a great atmosphere at training these days?

Creative??! I must have missed all the chances he created. Good on MM for getting rid of the dead wood. Wordsworth is not & never has been good enough. As for team spirit, the players respect MMs honesty with them. Let's not forget Skuse was one of our better players up to last Xmas.

Mick seems to hate playing football. Wordsworth never got a real run of games or a chance just like Taylor. Such a shame. Mick is ruining our great tradition

Blimey! MM did happily play somebody with flair who was good enough last season. Sadly, he's registered with Crystal Palace. The potential that a player might, possibly do something match-winning - Taylor and Wordworth - is not enough to keep him in a team, especially if he's not doing the things the manager asks of him in general. He's not against flair and talent per se,MM, but if the flair and talent ain't good or effective enough, he'll play within his means. Fulham looked 100% more flamboyant and attractive than us! but what would the majority of our posters be saying to 3 defeats on the bounce? Obviously I'd love us to play lovely flowing attacking football too, but how many teams in this league have actually got the players to do it, and win?

Needs to be playing games- the standard line Mick gives out when he wants rid of players, usually the ones with any flair!!!

Different season ,same old sh*t!!!!!

So according to your logic, there is no quality in the side at all then.

Not something I'd agree with.

bigfatjoe87, sorry who is ruining our great tradition? The man who saved us from relegation under a decent man who couldn't cope, spending a fair bit of dough along the way, inheriting the mess created by a know-nothing egomaniac, who spunked away so much money and set us up for relegation too. Grammatically this one has gone a bit wonky, but I'm sure you get my point. COYB!

Well played PeakFreans! Much more concise than me, and all the better for it.

So, we are supposed to be strengthening the team, yet more players are made available. Recently it's potentially Nouble and Wordsworth out; Marriott and Taylor gone. Just Sammon in. This is in addition to being at least three players down on last season and no attacking goal scoring midfielder signed to replace Williams. I assume mick and ME have three or four new signings lined up. Squad us weak in terms of numbers and lacks more creative players than last season. This is disappointing.

This is a shame, for me I would have him ahead of Skuse and would be playing alongside Hyam as he is a creative player and has always done the defensive stuff well. And if we had any other manager that would be the case. Remember in the derby game at home he was outstanding. Must be a replacement (most likely Collison) or a couple as we have such a small squad.
I think people would of preferred it to of been Skuse that's off, doesn't show the passion for the club like the other players out on that field and since his MOTM performance against Millwall last year he has gone downhill. Disappointed by this, increases Teddy Bishops chances though, rate him very highly.

Last March I watched Wordy play a great game at Brighton (we won 2-0) than another great game against Derby here at Portman Road (we won 2-1) then, blow me down, MM dropped him for the next match against Nottingham Forest at home and we could only draw. Very odd.

It was hard to understand at the time, but we have to trust MM's judgement.

We can only hope that MM has someone better lined up. Or maybe two more?

Darren Ambrose, the one who was unsuccessful in trials at Colchester and Blackpool? No thanks. And what is Mick doing with Woody, he's literally our only creative centre midfielder in the team, we don't need BOTH Skuse and Hyam playing. I'd be happy with Collison.
