McCarthy Not Expecting Williams Return
Friday, 2nd Jan 2015 16:01

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he doesn’t expect Crystal Palace to make Jonny Williams available for a further loan. The 21-year-old’s most recent spell with the Blues was officially up after the Charlton game, although the Wales international had been out of action since suffering a groin injury in the Watford match in November.

“I don’t think there’s any chance of that,” McCarthy said. “If [prospective new Palace manager] Alan Pardew was to say to Jonny Williams ‘look, you’re not what I want, I’ll let you go out on loan’ then I think Jonny would be in the phone to us or his agent certainly would.

“But I don’t think that’ll be the case. He was injured so he went back but I think [previous boss] Neil Warnock would have used him once he got fit, and I think he’s probably getting to that level now.

“And I think Alan will want every single player that he’s got and have a look at them, judge them and then decide who is going to play.”

McCarthy says there have been no developments regarding Noel Hunt’s return, the Irishman’s loan spell having come to an end after the Charlton match: “There’s nothing on that at the moment, we took it January 3rd, he can’t play in the cup.

“He’s gone back. I’m just leaving to Hunty, I don’t know what’s going to happen there.”

He says he could look to another striker if an agreement can’t be reached with Leeds to bring Hunt back to Portman Road.

“If we can, if there’s somebody available, of course,” he added. “I don’t know yet if that person will be there.

“But we want to be as strong as we possibly can. Hunty helped us along but that’s for him and Leeds to sort out, there’s no arrangement to do anything there.”

Little bit confused by Mick's language here, what does "I don't know yet if that person will be there" mean? Has he let slip that he already has someone in mind, or am I reading into this too much?

What with derby and Bournemouth looking to strengthen we must ensure we do too. I hope ME backs Mick with some funds to get some quality players in. Will very much be quality and not quantity though, which is fine. For me another striker and goal scoring midfielder and we'll be fine. It's all well and good turning down big bids for didz and Mings etc, but we need to strengthen in key areas for the run in

SouperJim - It sounds to me that Mick is looking at the availability of other loan signings, presumably young premier strikers.

Jimmy86 - I agree. Other clubs will strengthen and we need to do the same. It would be really disappointing if we miss out on promotion because key players get injured and we don't have adequate back up options. Other clubs have squads capable of covering for injuries. We don't particularly up front.

I suspect MM is keeping his options open as I doubt, say, a striker will want to come here to warm the bench as McGoldrick and Murphy are nailed on starters. Remember, the emergency loan system operates until March and I'm sure he has plans up his sleeve if the worst happens

SouperJim, he means if we can, and if there is someone available - he's not sure if any players will be "there" as in available. "That person" seems to be used as a general term.

Lads at this stage we know that MM will keep everything hush about whatever is or isn't going on behind the scenes.. We won't hear a squeak about anything until it's done and dusted and he tells Phil and Gav and they tell us.

I see Chalobah has just been sent back to Chelsea from Burnley after not featuring much for them this season. Think he would be an excellent loan acquisition this month, provide great cover and some added quality to the midfield.

We're having a superb season but, apart from Murphy and McGoldrick, no other striker or midfelder has scored more than one goal. I reckon MM will look to acquire an attacking midfielder.

To be honest its getting a bit boring hearing about Williams now. I would like to start seeing some good press about us bringing some quality players in, not ones we have had and cant get back. Oh yes, Ming did get 3 points on his license, BORING again lol. Common get a grip.

Andy, I for one appreciate updates on JW. He is a proven player with us and would be a great addition to support Murphy and McGoldrick while scoring a few himself. And looking ahead with optimism, he also has the ability to play in the Prem. Sounds like it's a long shot, though...even if there is a potential opportunity, Mick will play this very coyly.
Thanks for keeping us informed Phil.

Anyone else think the more we hear Mick say Williams is not returning, the more likely he will?...(knowing the canny lad our Mick is).

I'm sure we heard the same thing last window just before Williams came back

As Souper Jim has pointed put Micks quote is a bit odd on strikers,i'm pretty sure he would want someone to come in who is better than the back up strikers we have, if possible!!
