Connolly Close to Debut
Thursday, 19th Mar 2015 06:00

Winger Dylan Connolly is close to make his senior debut having impressed manager Mick McCarthy since joining the Blues in the January transfer window, having left Shelbourne at the end of the Irish season in November.

The 19-year-old, named in the Irish U21 squad last week, has been on the first-team bench on a number of occasions already but without making it on to the field so far.

“He is [getting closer to a game],” McCarthy said. “I think Dylan’s going to be a really good player for us. He played up front in the U21s game [against Colchester last week] and did really well.

“I think he’s going to be a really good player, a good right winger for us. He’s very, very quick, very direct, brave with the ball, he wants to take people on and he’s a good supplier of crosses. He’s getting closer.”

“But it’s a big ask for him to come from Shelbourne to start in a Championship side which is pushing for promotion. I think he would be hard to handle for any left-back, to be honest.”

Let's hope he's the winger we so desperately need, after the apparent failure of Henshall & Stewart to impress MM. Get him in!

He could be just the unknown impact player that Bolton had the other night with their Portuguese player. In the run in he could be that bit of difference we do lack. As we say on here many teams have worked us out but a player no one is likely to have seen could be great Hope to see him at Vicarage Road - even for 30 mins

I expect Mick has been molding him into a defensive right winger so he can defend our box before he lets him in the team, hope to see him sooner rather than later.

Sorry the headline is misleading.

“He is [getting closer to a game],”
“But it's a big ask for him to come from Shelbourne to start in a Championship side which is pushing for promotion."

I read that as, "It's not likely this season".

@commuterblue just like Mick went out and signed Stewart and Henshall you mean..... Seemingly they're not doing enough to get in the squad, let alone get in ahead of Tabb, who was told he could find another club in the summer. Both Stewart and Henshall looked good in pre season, Henshall linked up well with Mings when he has played. Could be that they don't run around like headless chickens. Having said that Tabb does a good job at what he does, shouldn't be on set pieces though

Oh for an attacking winger!!
Unfortunately MM made his thoughts on attacking wide players clear with his statements about Henshall. Essentially you've got to be able to defend in your own box or you wont play. Somehow cant seeing that being at the top of Ronaldo's, Di Maria's or Bale's priority list! Attacking widemen are there to create goals and score goals. Let these lads express themselves please Mick.

Not a MM player? look at Micks wingers at Wolves, I have no doubt he'll be looking at these positions for next season but for now hes working with what he has.

Be last game of the season nothing to play for and he will skin Blackburn, then we will all be saying once again, if only

If henshall and Stewart are considered not good enough it's up to them to prove mm wrong. At the moment, anyone watching their under 21 games would wonder what they are doing in that side let alone first team.

@ theipswichman, "but for now hes working with what he has."

Sorry, are Stewart, Henshall and Connelly currently what he has?

Ive 2 points (1) give him a go don't wait till last game find him score a hattrick and say any damage cause by inexperience could be repaired, and (2) Left back thought he was a winger hope that's a typo.

Wide men is what we have been missing, instead of the long ball, go through the flanks, Daryl, wood, varney have the ability in the air to do damage

That'll be him playing in centre mid then, or as a full back . What square peg will this round hole fit in ?

bluesince84, do you mean what round hole will this square peg fit?

What is people's problems... that lad is 19 and come from the equivalent of possibly non-league English football - you really want to throw him in whilst we're not playing our best or a passing game and he makes a mistake?
Let's stop the rot, get the two tricky games out the way and unleash him on the mid-table teams run in to the end of the season we have!

Everyone is assuming that it is the wingers not being good enough that is the problem but it may be that the defensive players who would be behind them cannot be trusted to cover quick enough, or to tackle cleanly enough, when the ball is lost to the opposition (which can happen when you take them on) and we find ourselves on the back foot.

if you remember anything about my posts you will know that I am confused as to why Mick has spoken so VERY positively about this lad and was SO desperate to get his work permit/compensation payments sorted so he could play (unless I've got the wrong Irish man?) - only to never (yet) play him

Like others i have cried out for a pacy winger to be on the bench. I'm saying we should start with him but like others i agree that 20 - 30 minutes (or the whole second half) if we need an injection.

To date our benches have been largely pointless as they are only like for like

Last game the Varney substitution changed the game, but that so seldom the case!

I'd stick him on the bench every game from what I've heard - and get him on the pitch if we need a goal !!!

Just a comment to those who criticise Mick for wanting everyone to defend as well as attack. How many teams have Glenn Hoddle's that cannot do it ?

I saw mention of Bale - he started as a full back and is OFTEN back defending AS WELL AS being up for the attacks - Rooney gets booked in defensive positions as often as for mouthing off - so why not expect that of Connolly ? Hasn't it been the modern game for many years that full backs and wingers interchange - giving the defence more to think about ?? So of course Connolly has to defend as well !!!!

Just saying?!

Young, talented player close to making their first team debut?

Jack Marriott . . . our next potential goal machine. I seem to remember he came on for the final ten minutes of our final home game last season.

And arguably our pre-season wonder boy, the talented Alex Henshall, the creative crosser of the ball that we all hoped to see in a Town shirt this season. I believe MM gave him ten minutes against Birmingham away (where incidently he looked a real handful).

I'd recommend people who don't usually watch our pre-season friendlys to go along, as it's the only chance you get to see some of these lads.

I hope I'm proved wrong and he gives Connolly 90 minutes some time soon!

OOOPS word missing ...

I'm ... NOT ... saying we should start with him but like others i agree that 20 - 30 minutes (or the whole second half) if we need an injection.

Makes more sense !

(HOPEFULY !!!)

We need to start taking the odd gamble or two, otherwise we are not going to make play-offs. Most posts on here concede that we are unlikely to get anything from Watford, so why not put Connolly, Clarke in and mix it up?
