Berra Nets Winner for Scotland
Wednesday, 25th Mar 2015 21:50

Town centre-half Christophe Berra netted the winning goal as Scotland beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in a friendly at Hampden Park.

Berra, on as a half-time sub, headed home Bournemouth winger Matt Ritchie’s right-sided corner with five minutes left on the clock.

It was the 30-year-old’s third international goal in his 29th full international appearance.

"It was a difficult game, they made it very difficult," the Blues defender said afterwards. "When teams do that it's very hard to break them down.

"Sometimes games are won on set pieces and luckily enough I managed to get my head on the end of a good corner kick and it just sneaked in."

Berra is the first Town player to score for Scotland since John Wark netted in a 2-2 draw with Switzerland in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park in March 1983.

The Scots are in action again on Sunday when they face Gibraltar in a European Championships qualifer, also at Hampden Park.

Good for you man. Always wonder if a Town player has played or scored on international nights.

Still can't understand why Wolves thought it was a good idea to let him go. They must have been mad.

Why are neither team wearing their home kits?

I agree what a signing - the best central defender we have had for years.

Yeah it works well when you've got Ritchie taking the corners. Tabb, not so much.

He is such a great pro really, understated but a quality player and I'm guessing a top bloke as well!
I have to give MM credit that he does try to get good people in his team.

Chambo may have better rapport with the fans but Berra is the rock of Towns defence. Micks best signing no doubt about that.

Apparently they are the colours of Lord Rosebury, which Scotland wore for a while after WWII. They are wearing them for their qualifying games.
