Academy midfielder Monty Patterson’s goal in New Zealand’s 5-1 win against Myanmar in Wellington earlier this month is in the running to be named the FIFA U20 World Cup Goal of the Tournament.

The tournament hosts came from behind to secure their first ever victory at the finals with 18-year-old Patterson netting their vital second goal two minutes after the restart.

The New Zealand youngsters were beaten 2-1 by Portugal in the round of 16 having achieved their pre-tournament aim of reaching the knockout phase.

Serbia went on to win the competition beating Brazil - who defeated the Portuguese in the quarter-finals - 2-1 after extra-time in Saturday's final in Auckland.

KiwiBlue2 added 22:34 - Jun 24 Monty looks a very good prospect. He more than held his own in the games he played. Only surprise to me was that he did not start the first two group games. It was a great goal in terms of the the lead up play and the finish but suspect that as it was scored by NZ as opposed to Brazil or someone like that it will not win.
