Berra Wins Cap as Irish Duo Unused in Defeat
Sunday, 11th Oct 2015 21:58

Blues central defender Christophe Berra won his 31st Scotland cap as his side thrashed Gibraltar 6-0 in Portugal in their final Euro 2016 qualifier, while strikers Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick were unused subs as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-1 in Poland and now face a play-off for a place at the finals in France next summer.

Berra played the full 90 minutes for the Scots who were unable to qualify via any route regardless of today’s result and finished fourth in the group.

Ireland, who ended their game with 10 men after John O’Shea’s late red card, finished third following their defeat in Warsaw with ex-Blues skipper Jon Walters netting their goal from the penalty spot in the first half.

They now face a two-legged play-off in November and will learn their opponents when the draw takes place on 18th October.

Well done Christophe.

I am pleased Murph and Didzy didn't play to be honest. We certainly don't want any injuries at this time of the season.

Wasn't Shane Longer taken off on a stretcher yesterday evening?

Was it after the stretcher that Shane Long became Longer then, Bluebell?

Its ideal for Murphs, he played a big part in the win against World Champions Germany and was rested yesterday, he should be fresh and more focused when he gets back to Ipswich.

He has a point to prove now to get his place in the Ireland team for the Qualifiers, same for Didz.

Ooops Hoppy. I blame the auto correct.

I didn't know you can't edit the news section. Will have to read what I type next time.

I see a pattern here:
Ireland play an ITFC player vs Germany and WIN
Scotland don't play an ITFC player vs Poland and DRAW
Ireland don't play an ITFC player vs Poland and LOSE
Scotland play an ITFC player vs Gibralter and WIN
Seems obvious what you need to do to win!! ;-)

Hopefully it'll be an England, Scotland 1,2 in the World Cup quals. If Scots can't get through that group as runners up, there's no hope for them.
