Murphy, Bishop and Coke Miss Trip, Touré and Varney Doubts, But Dozzell Will Travel
Thursday, 14th Apr 2016 14:23

Striker Daryl Murphy will miss the trip to face his former loan club Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, Larsen Touré and Luke Varney - another one-time Owls loanee - are both doubts and Teddy Bishop won’t be involved, while ex-Wednesday midfielder Giles Coke has been ruled out for the season, however, Andre Dozzell will be on the bus travelling to South Yorkshire.

“He’s been training, he’s no good for Saturday,” manager Mick McCarthy said regarding Murphy, who suffered a calf injury while away with the Republic of Ireland.

“I think he’s making noises that if he’s going to come back, Tuesday will be the game for him.

“There weren’t any other issues up until we went out and trained and Larsen Touré limped off with a bit of a groin and Reg Varney came off as well with a tight hamstring. We were fine up until that moment. We’ll see how they are.”

Regarding Coke, he added: “Giles is on crutches, he had his knee operated on. It’ll be next season the first time he’ll be back.

“He injured it in training and has subsequently had an operation on it and won’t be back until pre-season. He [hasn’t really had too chances] and it’s a nasty injury he’s got.’

McCarthy says he knows nothing of Liverpool’s reported interest in 16-year-old midfielder Andre Dozzell and says he’ll make the trip to Hillsborough.

“I would imagine there’s lots of people involved looking at our best young players and Doz is one of them, he goes away and plays with England,” he said.

“You can’t hide them, you can’t put them under lock and key but I’ve no idea about Liverpool or anybody else and I’ve certainly had no contact with anybody.

“He’ll be travelling with us on Saturday, he’ll travel to Sheffield Wednesday and not for any other reason other than I think he’s doing great and he’s probably due an opportunity. We’ll see over the next few games.

Teddy Bishop put in a quiet display in the U21s against the Owls on Monday, as Town won 1-0, and McCarthy says that was indicative of the 19-year-old’s current lack of match fitness.

“He’s miles away from playing in the first team, no, not miles away because he’s training great with us, but on 60x40 or half-size pitches it's one thing, and of course you get your breather and you don’t have to be in your shape,” he continued.

“He is training very, very well and I’m delighted with him. He won’t be involved this weekend, he’ll be playing with the U21s on Monday at Sheffield United and that’s with a view that he will get 90 minutes I hope and we will see him start a [first-team] game before the end of the season.

“He’s no problem with his injuries, but it’s 12 months since he played properly almost, he hasn’t played this season and he’d had little niggles before last season when he was fully fit, so the last thing I want him to do is be missing pre-season again.

“If we get him to play, it’ll be wonderful, but if we can’t and he has to just finish the season without having started a game and he’s fully fit and he can have his holiday and do his programme for the summer and then do a full pre-season, then we can look forward to him next season.

“If we got him back and we’ve got Didzy back, then we’ve got some quality back in the team.”

McCarthy continues to feel it’s very unlikely that loanee Ryan Fraser will return to Portman Road before the end of the season with the Scotland U21 international undergoing his rehab from his hamstring injury at parent club AFC Bournemouth.

“Ryan I doubt very much will be coming back. [Town physio] Matt Byard was speaking to him, I believe, and I think their physio and he’d have to be 100 per cent right.”

Midfielder Luke Hyam is banned for one game for his red card against Brentford last weekend.

In other words, Bishop is hideously unfit and won't play 90 minutes for us this season. I'd rather you just dispensed with your smoke and mirrors constantly MM.

and so the clear out begins......

This is a chance for us to look at younger players.
Coke, Toure, Varney, all should go. May as well pack their boots now.

I expect Dozzel will get no more than 30 minutes in the last game of the season and nothing more. Hopefully I am wrong but just can't see it happening.

Even if Dozzell " only got " 30 minutes that's quite something with the kid being just 16? Jesus christ some people love to moan.

For what it's worth, I don't think he'll be in the 18 but travel to get used to it and I'm sure he'll get some action between now and the season closing.

The academy seems to be back on track! WELL DONE Keane for getting rid of Klug and putting us back five years. Klug is an absolute hero.

Now Coke and Toure there are a couple of players who are on the wage bill, plus the loanees, with no benefit to the club.
Why does McCarthy have to say he will never play Stewart again;yet another bad acquisition

weevil: just because Mick didn't use the words 'hideously unfit' it doesn't mean that isn't what he said. Just read his comments, that is pretty much exactly what he said, no smoke and mirrors.

I'm as unhappy as the next man at our current form and quailty of football, but no need to find problems where there aren't any.

raycrawfordswig: do you really see Berra, Chambers and (to a lesser extent) Skuse as deadwood? Two of those are two of the best defenders in the league and Skuse is a very under-rated holding midfielder. It's not his fault Mick isn't pairing him with anyone with any creativity.

Town fans mystify me.
MM has no money, so has to gamble on what he can get. Sometimes we get a Berra, others time a Coke! That's what happens people when the owner doesn't want to spend a penny!

I would also like to add, I was appalled by the utter rejection and dismay Douglas received for extending his contract. A player wants to stay at our club and we (a term used rather loosely) knock him down!

Before you ask, I have seen the vast majority of games this season! COYB

Looking forward to Sheff Weds because even our dinosaur, stubborn arrogant manager can't fail to see that going for a point will be pointless. If you get my point.

Most of the dead wood referred to above are McCarthy's favourites so little hope of them being shipped out.

COYB - but McCarthy OUT

Bishop must be really unfit if he can't play his usual 60 mins

Frankly, Coke, Toure and Varney won't be missed. None of them are good enough for a promotion chasing team. Bishop clearly isn't fit and frankly, considering the play offs are highly unlikely it may be prudent not to risk injury so he is fully match fit for next seasons challenge.

heard a great quote from our very own Alan brazil on his talksport show which made me think ..they were discussing holding midfielders and he said that Is someone who is not good enough to play in defence or good enough to create in midfield... so how many holding type midfielders do we have? blimey we are full of them !!

ArnieM added 19:13 - Apr 14
can't see what the problem is with that list of injuries. the majority of them don't play first 11 anyway.
