Owner Evans Could Pay Big Fees
Saturday, 30th Apr 2016 06:30

Town owner Marcus Evans says the Blues could return to spending significant fees again this summer, having largely relied on free transfers, loans and players available for bargain sums in recent seasons after paying out big money for players in his early years at the club.

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview in today’s match programme, which also appears on the club site, Evans says that if manager Mick McCarthy wants to sign a player who would cost a significant fee then it would be discussed and revealed that a large offer was rebuffed in January.

“If Mick identifies a player that will cost us, say, a million, then we will look at it and discuss it,” Evans writes.

“I will look at transfer fees and we made a substantial bid for a player in January that was turned down but I will always weigh up how best the money we have available can be spent.

“I work closely with Mick on that, obviously. I spend the money and he has the fun! But seriously I feel we work well together.

“I provide hopefully a stable environment into which new players want to come and existing players want to stay.

“He works to get the best out of whatever squad we have available and we both look at how I can support a year-on-year improvement in the squad.

“Mick’s shown an excellent recruitment in his time here and we invested in the squad last summer which I felt was a step up from the previous year when we got to the play-offs.”

He feels that injuries seriously hampered the Blues this season with too many of the more creative players unavailable too often.

“Ultimately injuries have held us back this year from reaching our full potential,” he adds. “I think the injuries to our creative players have had a big impact.

“I’ve heard the criticism of our style of play at home games over the last month or two but I think any team would be affected by the loss of their most creative players, their most influential players and we have clearly missed David McGoldrick, Teddy Bishop, Ryan Fraser and Daryl Murphy.”

Evans also writes about what he has learnt during his eight and a half years at the club, manager Mick McCarthy and the academy, and also brands the current situation with Financial Fair Play “a total farce”. The full interview appears in today’s programme and is on the club site.

Action required, just a column in the programme whilst the club are trying to sell S/Ts won't cut it.

So by the sounds of it MM doesn't actually have a set budget.

Just if he finds a player he likes he has to ask ME.

Am I wrong in thinking that owners normally set a budget? Or do I play to much FIFA.

Sometimes the secrecy around attempts to sign players is too much. Yes, discretion around targets is important, but the fans didn't know that Mick tried to sign someone in January, all we could see was no action, and an apparent lack of desire from the owner. That has caused a lot of disillusionment amongst the fans. With an ageing squad and the loss of Fraser, we need to see early signs of activity, not leaving it to see who can be picked up free in August.

I would love to know who we tried to sign in January. Whilst I don't enjoy Mm's 'style' of 'football' I do like the way he gets transfer Walsh done without weeks of rumours surrounding them.

I often read on here that us ' moaners' total about 20 people and the majority of 'real' Town fans love MM and will always renew their STs. I think that argument is floored by listening to the crowd. Bored, frustrated and resorting to sarcasm. Whilst some fans choose to ignore that it's good to read that it hasn't gone unnoticed by ME.

I don't know where the word Walsh came from in the above!

Lies lies and more lies. The fans are fed up of your bull sh1t. Are you honestly telling us it is all the dinosaurs fault ?? He has the money to spend but has chosen the dross idiots we see each week ??? Then why give him a new contract because we are abysmal.

Significant investment last summer ??? Coke Toure Malyrszk Knudsen Douglas Pitman Yorwerth - which of these have made a material improvement to our squad ?? Pitman would be the only one. The investment you made was to significantly increase the wages of the McCarthy favourites who are ALL not good enough.

Gerken Chambers Smith Berra Excuse Murphy Sears are all league 1 or lower end championship at best and you're paying them top end wages. This squad is nowhere near capable of promotion and fans are voting with their feet at a rapid rate and therefore you choose now to come out with this utter bollox about big fees and rejected offers from January. We have not paid out a transfer fee if over 300k for years and the lack of spending is horrendously crippling the team now.

Your dinosaur manager plays one style of hoofball since reading away this season and even with funds would only buy better versions of dross because he sets teams up to not lose rather than to win ( Rotherham at home we had 7 at the back) he has no clue what he's doing. As for hiding behind FFP what another absolute liars of cr&p you talk. Leicester ignored FFP and I think they've done ok and they are no bigger a club than us. Next season they will be playing Barcelona and Bayern Munich we will be facing Burton Albion and Wigan Athletuc !!!!

So do one Marcus, we've heard all your rubbish and we're bored with it now. Enjoy the 12k crowds next season and the dire football played by below average journeymen. After 30+ years it won't be watched by me until there are massive changes 😂😂😂

I think the rumour was that we had made a bid for Bradley Dack from Gillingham. Evans is spot on though - injuries have definitely stopped us from having the same success as last season. We all thought with the added depth last summer, in the form of Toure, Malarczyk, Coke etc, that there was a chance we could go one step further... Only to discover most of last summer's signings were poor!! We need a summer of top recruitment otherwise we'll be in and around mid table again.

If ME is intending to invest in ITFC this Summer, that has got to be really good news. The real problem is the kind of funds that are needed to bring the right players in. A Bournemouth fan recently said that Fraser would cost 7 million and it sounds like Williams would cost at the very least 3 million. Obviously we are not going to be able to afford these kinds of fees. My guess is that we will be looking to buy from failed Championship sides or League 1 sides. The FFP is a total farce so agree with ME on that. Leicester City's success has really rubber stamped how much of a farce it actually is. QPR just found easy ways around the system to avoid their fine and Bournemouth, Forrest and Fulham seem to be doing the same. I can see the logic behind FFP but any rules MUST be able to be enforced. If they seriously wanted the system to work they should give huge points deductions at the beginning of the clubs next season to encourage them to get in line. A threat of 15 points deduction might do the trick.

Just read the interview. It's frustrating how much money Keane and Jewell both spent on sub standard players or players with serious issues. Magilton spent on Norris who was solid and Civelli who is now part of the Argentina squad. Makes me think we should never have got rid of Magilton! Maybe we'd be at the top of the Premiership now.....

Having just read the entire interview on ITFC site i can say the opening couple of lines got my back up immediately.
"Dont dare suggest and dont question"

However overall all, ME comes across well and i would suggest he does this type of interview more often.

I still do not feel that MM is the right fit for our club and to suggest that fans have only become frustrated at style of play for the last couple of months is blinkered.

So I guess what im questioning is, do i have the stomach to watch MM grind his way up the league for another season?

Still its youth today and that has me more cheerful on this Sat morning than i have been in months!!

Reading between the lines ME is disappointed that the players MM recruited have turned out to be so poor
Pitman and Knudsen have been sound investments, but the rest have been his cash down the drain, ie tens of thousands per week in wages
Prebbs assessment of the quality of some of our decent players shows equally poor judgement. Thank god fans don't make the decisions!

Vic added 07:37 - Apr 30
Prebbs, investment n the swqud is not just about money spent on transfers; Fraser and AMN would not be cheap on wages, and I'd suggest that it's reasonable for Douglas to be seen as a step up from several of the squad from the previous season. I think you'll also find that several of the others you mention were signed later to give a bit more depth to the squad and were never really looked at as likely first team players..

It's clear all he's doing is repeating the lines he's read off those MickInners types! Why isn't he publicly explaining what we all deserve to know? How are we supposed to judge the job done if he won't reveal the plans of who we're signing?

Investment is a must this summer. 4 or 5 million spent in the right areas with our academy players also coming into the reckoning would at least give us hope

Prebbs007 why dont you just do one. Good job you aren't the manager, we would be down among the Boltons and Blackpools

Prebbs - as you are turning your back on the club until there is a change do you think you have now disqualified yourself from commenting on the quality of our play and players?

In future that is Prebbs.

Yes. Big investment last summer. Does he think we are stupid. Don't believe a word until we see some ambition.

Jimmy86 added 07:58 - Apr 30
Makes me laugh. The article talks about spending big fees and then ME said if Mick finds a player for say a million!!! That sums it up. A million is a modest fee not a big fee... a big fee would be 2-3 million or more

Think we need to spend money but wouldn't trust MM to buy wisely as for every decent signing Berra there's been a few dodgy ones Coke,Toure etc . Believe Dack was the player we bid for but missed the boat as heard he's off to Palace for 2.5 million. What happened to the days when they took our rejects Delaney,Garvan. Anyway ME needs to do something as a black cloud is hanging over Portman Road at the moment in complete contrast to last season .

Let's face it any money spent has to be on a player who will improve the team not the squad. Ones for the future should be produced in-house. Any player that requires a trial no thanks may be only if he's a youngster. Sir Bobby only bought players that improved the team with the exception of one or two. We can't afford to keep bringing players that make up the numbers. Yes we need a decent squad perhaps a lot of the current first are really only squad standard at the moment.

The sad thing is that if relatively modest investments had been in either of the last two Januaries when our league position was very strong, the evidence is that we could have pushed on. Now we are faced with bigger close season spending (knee jerk to slump in season ticket sales?) on a potential team who will be strangers to each other.

I think we are all getting a bit over excited over these comments from the owner.we will never know what goes on between Evans and MM.We are all getting very frustrated at the decline this season, and we of course want a vast improvement during the summer and next season whoever is the manager or the squad we have. This season has really p@@@@d me off and at one stage, yes I was going to stop my season ticket.BUT,I just feel the penny has dropped with the owner and I just think the club will turn it's self round.Having said that I think we should get behind the club and fingers crossed this hopefully will improve otherwise I can see major changes mid season. If things don't improve ,next season will be my last as a season ticket holder.!
