Hyam Set to Sign New Deal
Tuesday, 10th May 2016 13:40

TWTD understands that midfielder Luke Hyam will put pen to paper on his new contract within the next 24 hours. The 24-year-old has agreed a new two-year deal running until 2018 with an option for a further season.

As previously reported, the club and Hyam initially failed to agree new terms but the player accepted a revised offer towards the end of last month, as manager Mick McCarthy confirmed, the Blues having already activated an option for another season in his previous contract.

Hyam came through Town academy and having made his debut at Middlesbrough on the opening day of the 2010/11 campaign has now made 114 starts and 17 sub appearances, scoring three goals.

The former Northgate High School pupil missed the early part of 2014/15 having undergone knee surgery but, having spent a month on loan at Rotherham, returned to the side just after Christmas and went on to make 11 starts and six sub appearances.

Shame. Don't rate him. The 'local lad' tag has carried him for a while.

Really hasn't kicked on and improved (In my opinion)... good back up I suppose but not a name I would put on the starting sheet. Love to be proved wrong.

2 out of Douglas, Skuse and Hyam again in the middle again next year then? That's progressive :-/

Casanova ... I agree with your concern - especially now we have others free from injury - but look on the bright side --- let's at least hope that it is never all three of them again !

Hyam could be a long term servant of the club - but I agree he hasn't kicked on yet - maybe the injury time off has slowed this and we can hope for more?

Hyam has termandous workrate as well as tenacity but is simply too bang average whilst in possession of the ball to be a good enough midfielder for a promotion push. Wheras Skuse isn't too bad on the ball but lacks that cutting edge and dynamism to control the midfield.

Pity we can't mode them into one player.

I actually like Hyam, does the dirty bits. Does lose his head sometimes, but been plagued with injuries so I would be happy with the new contract.

He won't be on huge money and is solid backup for Skuse. No brainer really.

He's 24, so not a kid anymore, and really does not seem to have matured. Much as I like the idea of having locals in the team, I don't think that he will cut it for us next season.

I'd be happy for him to prove me wrong though!

Happy to have him in the squad don't get me wrong, but annoyed at the club offering him a new deal after he rejected the initial one ( which I doubt was anything other than a payrise ) I would have at that point told him to jog on to be bluntly honest. Sums up all that's wrong with the modern day game in my opinion, players like this dictating. Grow some balls clubs, if they feel the offer is sub-standard then they are welcome to go and find a new club.

All that being said a decent squad player but I hope the deal is 2 years maximum.

Looking good for the future. Would like to see Hyam, Bishop and Dozzell playing midfield for Town some day soon.

I think the problem people don't rate Hyam is because he's usually been asked to do a more offensive job than his skill-set allows.
If you have him in the Skuse role protecting the defence and just giving the ball to a more skillful teammate he'll do a good job, but he's usually asked to play with Skuse and get forwards more which he isn't much good at.

Anyway - I'm happy he'll provide good competition/cover for Skuse

Currie10, it won't have been Hyam who rejected it, it would have been his agent which is a problem in football these days.

Then his agent should have been told in no uncertain terms " no ta ". Clubs seriously need a backbone. That said we're a lot better than your Fulham, Blackburn, Forest, QPR of this league. Crikey moses it must be an agents dream how thick clubs are.

Not as though Hyam is guaranteed to be fit before this big injury he's had a few.

very rare picture of Hyam, there (he's not touching his hair).

Back up for skuse???? He's better than skuse....dozzell with more goals and kentlock with more assists.....neither of them are going to be good enough to get us up....you can't keep quoting the " does all the dirty work" tag anymore...we need goals and assists from midfield to get us up.

I like hyam but the problem is he's to much of a liability

The best XI's we've played under ME under every manager has featured Hyam. So underrated, hopefully no more injuries and can show his importance in next season's promotion!

Great stuff!

Fortunately, and this is the main thing, this report confirms that Hyam's a former Northgate High pupil. That rarely ever gets mentioned on TWTD. Just thankful to finally have that detail confirmed.

Local lad he may be, but he's not really good enough to play a prominent role in a promotion-chasing team. Fine as a back up but personally I would have moved him on when the first contract offer was rejected. Just a very average player.

Lathers added 15:19 - May 10
It's surely better to have Hyam type players as a back up for next season to play League/FA Cup matches than Toure, Coke, Varney etc. I think the only loser here is Hyam himself, as at his age he would surely benefit more from moving somewhere where he was going to get a regular game.
