Wednesday Continue to Eye McGoldrick
Wednesday, 27th Jul 2016 13:31

Sheffield Wednesday are continuing to keep tabs on Town striker David McGoldrick, TWTD having first reported their interest in the Republic of Ireland international a month ago.

The Owls, with whom McGoldrick was briefly on loan in 2011, are one of a number of Championship clubs eyeing the 28-year-old, who returned to action at Cambridge on Saturday having missed the first few weeks of pre-season with a hip flexor problem.

Dutch side FC Twente, who were previously keen on McGoldrick during his time at Nottingham Forest, have also shown interest but the financial side of any proposed deal would appear to rule them out of the running.

McGoldrick, among the top earners at Portman Road, probably the highest, is contracted until the summer of 2018 and Town are likely to want a significant fee, although the Nottingham-born frontman’s valuation is unlikely to be close to the £7 million they turned down from Leicester in the summer of 2014.

He has that something special, it carries a huge premium. Would hate to see him go but if it's unavoidable I would expect a bumper fee.

He has quality, cannot deny it and once he gets into a flow of games, the guy is class - we cannot afford to let him go, considering the fact that we most likely won't get a replacement in and with the squad looking thin as it is already, it would be a big gamble. Having said that, can he be guaranteed fit 100% and take him to the levels we saw 2 years ago? only time will tell, COYB

We turned down £7m 2 years ago, so don't accept anything less than that now, regardless of his fitness problems. He's under contract and if anyone wants him they must pay top dollar

If we let him go, it shows a great deal of what this club is aiming for. We need to keep our best players and last season - as everyone knows - if Bishop and McGoldrick were fit, then playoffs would have been a lot more likely. They are serious game changers!

However, IF we do sell, the money MUST be reinvested. Countless times Milne has stated that money is there to be spent and that the Mings money will be reinvested etc, but we have spent £750'000 of the potential £8M, which is appalling.

Would also be absolutely devastated to Didzy him leave!

Keep hold and recruit some good quality players.

Now this will show Mr Evans metal. He has said no one needs to be sold so with such a valuable if fragile asset what would he do if a decent offer came in. I also feel if there was he would HAVE to spend money now or January. My own opinion not that it is worth much is he wont sell he will keep hold of him

Id let him go, we won't get a good season out of him. The money we get for him could be spent on painting the turnstiles, it has been a few years since clegg painted them!

To those who go on about the millions from sale of players in the last few years.

It has paid some small fees for players, loans, agent costs and wage increases/ new contracts

Take the money and run. McGoldrick will ALWAYS be injury prone.

To be honest we have no chance of getting near the teams that have come down as they have far too much money and there will be 4 or 5 teams pushing for the other 3 places (Derby Brighton Wolves Sheff Wed etc.)

We can never get near the prem teams as again they have far too much money. Rooney in a month earns more that we spend on players.

We have the same side as last year and McGoldrick was out most of it, so we will be lucky to get 10 this year so who really cares.

Had enough of the season already

Boring hoof ball football and the same teams on MOTD every weeks. Yawn

Karlos what ever happened to parachute money being to help balance books and pay wages while getting down to championship wages. Was meant to stop the likes of Portsmouth happening again but instead its used to get players and stay in debt while hope to go straight back up to prem

Take the £££ and run as far as I'm concerned.

I love a fully fit on the ball Didsy. However, that's less than 10 games a season and he's supposedly our top earner. We need players fit 40 games plus not 10.

Never sell one of your best assets to a competitor. If Premier League clubs do not come after McGoldrick - or any other of our top players for that matter - encourage him to bring out the best in him, play him in his best position and give him every opportunity to excel !

Cannot see us letting one of our top players go to a rival. It's a shame most of the links this summer have been outs rather than ins.

There is likely to be an element of truth in this rumour.
Should he so depart,
I do wonder if by some miracle
he would suddenly appear week in week out for his new club! Fitness restored. Hallelujah. Glory be... He has been healed, A definite Miracle..

Whereas remain here and he would be almost be permanently sidelined with some concurrent ailment, and only putting in an occasional guest appearance.

Why sell for big money when the money fails to be reinvested into the squad to the same magnitude? Given our inactivity and inability to land targets, its a no brainer, he stays. Unless i thought that 7 million would go straight off our debt immediately...which doesn't ever appear to happen.

Well, we didn't sell Murphy a year ago when Boro offered over £4m. With some hindsight, it wouldn't have been a bad bit of business, but presumably Mick didn't want to lose his main striker just before the start of the season. The same applied to McGoldrick the year before. I wouldn't have objected to either sale, but the real problem is that the proceeds seem to go in funding operating losses rather than being reinvested in replacements - see Mings & Cresswell.

When McCarthy relies on old physio and an agent in finding a trialist winger..
ask yourself
Where the "Hell" is going to start looking for a striker this late in the close season?

He is certainly no "DYNAMO"
He can't conjure up anything, unless of course... We get Maitland-Niles back
Then we can relax as he is gonna be our saviour... Ha Ha, Hee Hee, Ho Ho

One of only a couple of players at our club who have quality. If he goes we will be worse off in that extent, but alas the other argument is he misses so many games through injury. However, the big question is whether all of the fee received and wages saved will be reinvested into the playing squad. If not, then under no circus stances should we sell anyone.

DM definitely has quality, but as we all know, he sure is injury prone! And his goal tally has dried up as a result and he certainly seems to have lost another yard of pace (not that he was ever the quickest).
I guess it really depends on how much could we get for him? Also, does he want to go? Sadly, probably I expect if the right offer comes along. And last and certainly not least, would we reinvest the money or would it vanish without a trace? In light of this, I hate to say it but I have to agree with something Alex Neil said in the local rag in my parts today: http://www.edp24.co.uk/sport/norwich-city/alex_neil_insists_norwich_city_prepare
“The market has gone crazy at the moment. There is a left back from Liverpool who has just gone to Bournemouth for £6m. If that is a left back then what are strikers worth? (Andre) Gray went into Burnley for £7m plus another £2m and that was last year before the hike in terms of the television money. You either join in or get left behind.”
If we do sell DM surely we must reinvest most of the cash or we risk getting left further behind, and that unfortunately includes Naaaaridge!
:-(
I'm all for the kids and perhaps throwing them in the deep end might turn out to be a blessing in disguise, we may reap the rewards a year or 2 from now. However, if they look too good guess what, they'll be gone in no time! That is just how football is these days, give a young player a platform, and you put them straight in the shop window for the big boys to snap up. That's the catch 22 of it all, no easy answers to any of this I'm afraid!
I fear we're getting left further behind and our only chance to plug the gap is our youth, but if they shine will we be able to hang on to them for long enough for them to get us out of the hole? Easier said than done in the current climate.

Hard for me to fault ME's financial commitment when he turns down £7mill for McG. Just baffles me why we didnt invest a small to reasonable amount during last two January windows.

Bring on the Barnsley an COYB

Given his injury record I cant see anyone offering much up front - its going to be payment based on appearances I would guess!

........ will always miss more games than he plays - too lightweight - although has undoubted talent.

What a waste ? ....... cash in and paint the turnstiles (probably need doing again).
