Varney Rejoins Town
Friday, 12th Aug 2016 11:07

Town have announced that striker Luke Varney has re-signed on a short-term contract until January.

Varney, 33, was released by the Blues at the end of last season, having signed a previous short-term deal after recovering from the achilles injury he suffered in the play-off semi-final against Norwich City at the end of 2014/15 when on loan from Blackburn.

The Leicester-born frontman, who has been given the number 12 shirt, will go straight into the squad for Saturday's game at Brentford.

The Blues are currently short of striker cover with Brett Pitman sidelined with a thigh injury.

In his previous two spells at Portman Road Varney has made 11 starts and 21 sub appearances, scoring two goals, the most recent in the 3-2 victory over the MK Dons in the final home game of last season in April.

Boss Mick McCarthy is continuing to look for additions with Premier League loan players remaining on his radar as well as permanent signings.

We need to be signing players for the future, not good enough our strikers are not scoring surely there is better in the lower leagues. Why not resign John Wark he is still better then most of our squad players and that says something.

& 2 goals in 51, that's up there with Stern John who for some crazy reason Keane seemed to prefer for a while than Rhodes or Wickham! I'd put him in the same bracket as Conor Sammon mediocre journeyman who is not likely to set the world alight. He's got about the same goal scoring record as Skuse!
And I've ripped into Skuse in the past, but after seeing Town Tue night, I'll concede we need Skuse in the starting line up as the other options (Douglas especially!) are simply not up to scratch.
Don't mean to sound negative about Varney but unless he steps his game up, based on his recent form he's not going to provide the goals we badly need! We need a 20 goal a season man, yet Varney (as far as I can see) is the sort of striker that will prob struggle to reach double figures.
The only thing in his favour is he might be raring to go after his bad injury and we might see a new LV and he could surprise some of us doubters. Let's hope so as we badly need some goals from somewhere. I remember when signed Alun Armstrong and I recall there were a few doubters but he certainly did the business. Although let's be honest, LV looks a long way below AA in terms of goal-scoring pedigree.

I just hope his agent isn't the same as Pogba's
He pockets £22 million for brokering that deal

I have to say the first time around we signed Varney, like many I thought " jesus christ what a poor poor signing " however first time around certainly he was a lot better than I thought.

Deceptively quick, very very good in the air and certainly in a 4-3-3 a very good wide right option. A bit of a poor mans Walters for us in that role.

Watford away the 1-0 he was head and shoulders our best player until weirdly at the time being subbed.

With Pitman out at the minute, McGoldrick made of glass and god knows what's happening with Freddy this is a wise move. Player happy to play when given the chance and won't cause issues behind the scenes.

Welcome back Reg.

Good business. We've probably had our eye on a big name striker coming in but I imagine it was dependant on one of ours going out for a good fee or as part-ex. If McGoldrick proves his fitness, that may happen in January. In the meantime, varney offers a decent option as cover. Welcome back Reg.

i'd imagine this is a result of Tuesday night and seeing the back four launch high balls hopelessly up to Sears who had no hope of winning them! Without Murphy we lack a target man so Mick has gone to his "in case of emergency break glass" back up of Varney.

in Varney's defence he always puts a shift in and jumps well.

Not a good signing in my opinion. 2 goals in 28 appearances says it all...

He's a nice guy but isn't good enough.

Cover for Murph. There have been loads of comments about how he brings others to the game and there is no-one else similar. Varney is the closest.

Still, good excuse for the moaners to moan.

Dear me...what's the point of this?, McCarthy says he'll try and entertain more - isn't resigning Reg just a sign nothing has changed, he's a physical player and not very clinical end of.

First post of this season and as usual an interesting first six days at PR and on TWTD!
MM lovers and haters abound, but whichever, here he is and little sign from any voice or viewpoint that he is going anywhere.
Having thought hard and long I renewed my season ticket and watched first half of Barnsley wondering why I had.
But by introducing one particular player, maybe too early in his MM career to do anything but go forward and shoot we won the match.
That was good, four goals, smiles appeared but cracks were papered over, we know where and lo and behold they seeped open on Tuesday
Ok some say "only a teeny weeny Cup"but it would be ok in our humdrum existence to do well in that teeny weeny Cup.
So Wednesday morning glum faces but only two games in so no need yet( maybe) to be too mournful, for there is still hope, the transfer window is open, at least another 44 games to go..MM has shown that he (or his clearer thinking scouts) believe in Youth , with the two Grants having appeared..
So says management, let's inspire the ITFC supporters, scour the land and unearth a goal scorer, a player with youth, and as was once said an " eye for goal"...and what happens, lets unveil" Cuddly Good Humoured Reg"
With respect, was that decision really paving the way for Non season ticket holders to return and for those already signed on to be satisfied with their investment.?
His goal scoring record in recent times , his ability to steer clear of injuries, makes him only an " almost man".... " we are down 3.1 ...stick Reg on , he will save the day" is that what this is about?
Was there really no other alternative?
Maybe " Cuddly Reg" will be inspired to make the doubter(s) eat these words

We can sign players from anywhere in Europe and Reg varney is the best Evans and McCarthy can find, it looks as though it could be a long painful one

Welcome back Reg! i always thought he was one of the very few that actually played for the shirt and gave it his all! very pleased to see the man back with us!
We have Freddie who can,t buy a goal, Murph who has lost his midas touch and Brett injured,
Its all down to Reg now to give us that spark up front!

Welcome back Reg. Low budget cover for Murphy will give us an outlet we were missing Tuesday with his aerial prowess

This is great news. We badly needed cover for Murphy and this is absolutely the right man for the job. Good in the air, gives his all and we may be able to agree to sign him until the end of the season. Excellent acquisition and knows our game plan by heart.

This is a panic signing as we have Pitman and sick note McColdrick out . Can't fault Varney for enthusiasm but he not the long term answer and even short term his goals record is not good enough .

We were never going to get a full season out of Murphy or McColdrick , so the need was already there for a new striker , but now it's vital .

Ward and Grant look like good signings , but have they really answered the need for wingers .

2 games in , with 3 bad halves and 1 good one , with Norwich next week , things are not looking good

Is this really the best we can get in to replace McGoldrick sort term or not.
