Varney Rejoins Town
Friday, 12th Aug 2016 11:07

Town have announced that striker Luke Varney has re-signed on a short-term contract until January.

Varney, 33, was released by the Blues at the end of last season, having signed a previous short-term deal after recovering from the achilles injury he suffered in the play-off semi-final against Norwich City at the end of 2014/15 when on loan from Blackburn.

The Leicester-born frontman, who has been given the number 12 shirt, will go straight into the squad for Saturday's game at Brentford.

The Blues are currently short of striker cover with Brett Pitman sidelined with a thigh injury.

In his previous two spells at Portman Road Varney has made 11 starts and 21 sub appearances, scoring two goals, the most recent in the 3-2 victory over the MK Dons in the final home game of last season in April.

Boss Mick McCarthy is continuing to look for additions with Premier League loan players remaining on his radar as well as permanent signings.

Good signing.

Will act as a battery ram for the last 15 when Murphy is knackered.

Knows the club, popular fella, not sure why we let him go?

A bit of perspective is required from us fans and not just negative posts on every story.
In the last two days Brett Pitman and Didzy have both picked up injuries depleting attacking options.
We have acted quickly for a temporary solution in someone we know that fits in and provides short term cover, presumably while we look for better and longer term replacements.
That is sensible management surely?
If my secretary when ill today, I would need to get a temp in until I found a more suitable solution.
I doubt he will start and it will force Murphy/Sears upfront which might be a good think, Dozzell or Bishop with Skuse and Ward/Grant on the wings is still good for me.

As far as I know he has been training with the club since last season and had an offer from Preston.
He wont set the world on fire but will never let you down, also heard that he was being groomed as Kennedys replacement or heading for a place as an academy coach.
As cover he will do for me.

Welcome back Reg. One up front on Saturday, or three ?

Check book out for Billy Sharp up front .......................and Mr Hourihane for midfield while we're at it. (one goal in four last season).

McCarthy relying on the kids when required, again ... or rather not, again. Farcical.

Maybe not good enough for league one but certainly good enough for us ! Decent player.

If Varney was rated by anybody elsewhere wouldn't he already of been signed up? The fact that he's available and nobody else came calling either means Mick is a genius and can see something that nobody else can, or the total opposite. Which one is it? Answers on the back of a postcard please. :-)

I fear this LV insurance for DM isn't going to pay out! :-)

Expect the attendance will be up by at least 2000 for our next home game with fans waiting in great anticipation of watching Varney come on for the last 5 minutes so our back 4 can launch some hit and hope long balls into the stratosphere for him to try and most likely fail to get on the end of! Man, I can't take this any more, if this is the best Mick and Marcus can come up with ahead of the Derby then we may as well all head down to watch Ipswich Wanderers and save a few quid and heartache in the process!!!
& so now we know the hot topic of conversation at the Algarve Classic between Mick and Marcus on the 18th hole, Luke Varney! It all falls into place! HOOF AND JOKE!!!

BlueySwede. I sure hope so! I obviously meant from the Barnsley game. I've already erased Tue night from my memory, it was that bad! Took 2 hours to get to as the A12 was shut and there was a big hold up, and for what, to watch Jonathan Rasputin Douglas et al do sod all! As I said in an earlier post, definitely one best forgotten!
And how about the Academy? it may as well get a Category Zero status as most of the budding talent that goes through it get rewarded with Zero hour contracts by Mick in favour of the likes of Jonathan Rasputin Douglas and Luke Abracadabra Varney.
When it rains it pours! :-(

I don't see anything wrong with this tbh. Here until January, will be cheap, we know he'll run himself into the ground and will put himself about, decent in the air, strong, quick, experienced (will be good for Ward and Grant). Decent enough squad signing until someone more permanent can come in.

Knows the club and is very used to the rocket balls that our defenders always deliver, so for me a positive signing. I thought he was on trial at Grimsby so thought he was long gone. So team against Brentford.

Bart
Chambers, Berra, Smith, Knudsen
Ward, Skuse, Dozzell, Sears
Varney, Murphy

We will look way more balanced with two target men. Just wish we hadn't let Foley go.

In his last 268 games stretching all the way back to his spell at Charlton starting in 2007, Luke Abracadabra Varney has scored 42 goals in all. Since the start of the 2014 season he has scored a total of 2 goals in 2 seasons! His overall goals to games ratio since 2007 is one goal every 6.38 matches. I bet those lot down the A140 must be s**ting themselves! Or more like p**sing themselves with laughter! :-(

He typically averages around 4 or 5 goals a season, prolific he most certainly aint!!!

Rearrange words "barrel think scraping we are"....bit yoda. Last Saturday was excellent but small cracks show problems with our small squad. With McGoldrick off for yet another stint (sell), would really hope for something new and more ambition. Come on ITFC!

The traffic must of been flowing freely on the M25 today if not we might of been gazumped for LV as there must of been a string of other clubs keen to get in there first! :-)
Mick is clearly growing impatient as I'm surprised he hasn't been circling round his old club Wolves like a vulture as they are prob about to have a mega clear out of all the old deadwood to make way for their 20 million transfer arrival! I'm sure Mick must be rubbing his hands at the prospect.
Failing that, maybe he'll take another look at the Hunt brothers, or if they're otherwise engaged on trials at some illustrious stomping ground like Grimsby, maybe the Chuckle Brothers can do a job just until DM is fit again, either this side or next side of Xmas!

Clearly not the long term answer and a backwards step. But I do like Varney so good to see him back. We need to sign a permanent striker though.

Sorry, but he's rubbish. Do we not have anything in the youth setup or could we not take a punt on a younger League 1 striker for a modest fee?
