Varney Rejoins Town
Friday, 12th Aug 2016 11:07

Town have announced that striker Luke Varney has re-signed on a short-term contract until January.

Varney, 33, was released by the Blues at the end of last season, having signed a previous short-term deal after recovering from the achilles injury he suffered in the play-off semi-final against Norwich City at the end of 2014/15 when on loan from Blackburn.

The Leicester-born frontman, who has been given the number 12 shirt, will go straight into the squad for Saturday's game at Brentford.

The Blues are currently short of striker cover with Brett Pitman sidelined with a thigh injury.

In his previous two spells at Portman Road Varney has made 11 starts and 21 sub appearances, scoring two goals, the most recent in the 3-2 victory over the MK Dons in the final home game of last season in April.

Boss Mick McCarthy is continuing to look for additions with Premier League loan players remaining on his radar as well as permanent signings.

We need some quick cover in the striking department - for the bench, if nothing else.

He is instantly available, knows the club, the manager and the set-up. He has played in this team before, very recently. He is liable to be inexpensive and is willing to take a short-term deal. A lot of us thought he did ok in his first stint with Ipswich (when he wasn't returning from a major injury).

He is evidently not intended to be a long-term answer to our striking needs, as it's only a four and a half month contract.

I fail to see the serious downside which is causing some people to go off the deep end.
