McCarthy Confirms Murphy Joining Newcastle
Saturday, 27th Aug 2016 17:35

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that striker Daryl Murphy will be joining Newcastle United having handed in a transfer request.

“It's disappointing to lose Daryl but I can understand his reasons for wanting to go to Newcastle and we wish him well,” McCarthy told Ipswich Town HD

"Murph has been great for me over the past few years but it's a good deal all round. I didn't want to keep an unhappy player.”

Disappointed but good luck to him because he deserves this chance but it's what we do with the money is more important!

Good luck Daryl. Feel we've seen his best years at Portman Road which was nice. Been a hard worker for us so thank you and all the best.

I expect he was a fairly big earner in terms of wages and hopefully getting a coupla million (anybody know the rough figure as anything between £2m and £5m has been flying about?) for a 33 year old who isn't a prolific goal scorer is good business for us. Just need all of that to go into replacements as I fear we're now two goal scorers/strikers short. Dig deep, Evans.

Totally agree Tractorboy1985, some people saying a free transfer won't replace Murphy yet we signed him, initially on loan and then as a free transfer.
Millions does not need to be spent, just the right player and right coaching.

Good luck Murph

Brownie- think it will be Best and Shelton on one year deals and Sulley on a season long loan. We played with Pittman in the target-man role and it seems to have worked out ok. I don't think this will give us a promotion chasing side but if either a Best or Shelton catch form we could do ok. I was just reading the background on Shelton. He's been released because his old clubs been dissolved. The whole team is available for free, unreal situation.

I with Daryl all the best, as he has been a great servant over the years and excellent value for the two loans and the free transfer permanent signing. Although he can still do a job his best days are behind him, so to get a few million for him now is great IF we can sign a younger replacement or two. The question is, who fits the mould? We need someone up front good in the air, so let's hope the scouts have done their homework and we are ready to move.

All the best Daryl! - he had a pretty average last seaSon but has been a good aquisition. Expecting the club to reinvest ALL the transfer money (doubt it will happen though).

Whats happened to the KaiKai story of earlier?...seen in the directors box, maybe it was a dude who looked like him. :)

Why isn't Leon Best the answer? We haven't seen him play in a town shirt ye, that's even if he's coming here. Watch him first before you judge him!!
He could be the answer you never know, strong, quick, good in the air.
Give him a go COYB

Miltonsnephew. I watch a lot of SheffUtd and believe me, Sharp is definitively not the answer.

I'm just merely commenting other possibilities.

I just don't see us getting the right replacement, but I do hope I'm wrong.

Would love us to sign Kaikai permanently.

I thing we need to spend more money then the money were getting from the sale of Murphy.

I hope I'm wrong.

I believe that we have seen the best of Murphy the season before last. At end of last season Murphy looked tired and jaded, although he was looking sharper in the Euro's. But at 33 and only 2-3 weeks rest this summer, I cannot see Murphy lasting the pace. £3.5M is a good price for a striker on his way down, in hindsight wish we had taken the £7M for McG before he got injured.

The only question is reinvestment. Murphy would have been on top wages at the club, so surely we can offer this and pay a decent price for a replacement. I will not be happy with freebies or loans.

Darryl Murphy has served this club well and amazed most of us with the freak top goalscorer 2 yrs ago. However, at 33 i think his best years are behind him, maybe has one more season in him. Hopefully now, we can get a recognised striker in with the proceeds, if not another player in the mould of Ward to play on the left.

Best of luck Murph, thanks for all the endeavour you've shown for us. Gonna be very tough to find a replacement

Miltonsnephew

Mate Vatsadze is a good call, but it looks like he played for them a couple of years back. Shelton in the directors box at Portman road for Preston game by the sounds of things. So Shelton and Best before the end of the transfer window. Best looks like a lively player who likes to run at defenders and is good in the air. I know next to nothing about Shelton but he's got a phenomenal scoring record for Jamaica but never seems to have found any form at club level. Still only 30 and got 70 odd caps for Jamaica. Maybe a double unveiling in the next two days after Murphy has officially signed for Newcastle?

He can sprint 40 metres in 4.59 seconds...holds the Bundisliga 2 record for fastest player of all time. That could be handy at the end of a mighty hoof!

Get Best for free , Kakai on season loan with view to permanent move and spend a £1.5 million on Dack a very good goal scoring box to box midfielder

He didn't say he was unhappy, he was saying he didn't want to make him unhappy by making him stay when he's handed in a request.

one last big payday for him before retiring, 3 million for us, not really hitting the heights of a couple of years back...can't argue with that really! Thanks for everything, been a great servent to the club for many years now, good luck to him! Hope we can get in a good, young replacement.
