Watkins Won't Be Joining Town
Wednesday, 31st Aug 2016 08:29

Barnsley’s Marley Watkins won’t be amongst Town’s deadline day signings, TWTD understands.

The midfielder-turned-striker was the subject of a £1 million bid from the Blues yesterday but the Tykes are not willing to sell and Town are now looking elsewhere for their replacement for Daryl Murphy, who joined Newcastle over the weekend.

Another of their potential Murphy-like targeted, Burnley’s Lukas Jutkiewicz, is set to join Birmingham City on loan.

Jutkiewicz's move to St Andrew's has led to speculation that the Blues could target Birmingham striker Clayton Donaldson, 32, who was widely believed to be the player Town saw as a replacement for Murphy when clubs showed interest last summer.

However, manager Mick McCarthy hinted over the weekend that he would look to bring in a younger player, while the Midlanders would probably want a big fee for the Jamaican international.

It promises to be an uncharacteristically busy final day of the transfer window at Portman Road before it shuts at 11pm this evening.

The Blues are expected to sign at least one other player in addition to a striker with one deal believed to be close to completion.

Yesterday, Town signed trialist Leon Best on a one-year deal with an option for a further season, while Leicester's Tom Lawrence signed on a season-long loan.

Just because we have 3m from Murphy Sale doesn't mean we should exceed our valuation of a player.

Shame as if Mick could persuade ME to bid £1m+ then we must have rated him highly. We would have been looking at several other players in parallel so excited to see what the day brings.

However with it being deadline day other clubs know we are desperate and they know we have money. It could make it difficult to get the right deal as can't ever see ME reinvesting the full £3m, especially as we have already made a few signings yesterday. These wouldn't have been free in terms of wages at least.

And because we have a few quid to spend any selling club is going to hike up the price!

I believe this happened last week but as MM tries to keep things out of the public domain we only heard about it last night

Let's hope the two new players are permanent deals. Something to build with year on year. You would have thought the club had a deal virtually completed before letting Murphy go. A loan would be disappointing. Should be spending a few quid today. Great stuff.

The £7m sell on from the John Stones deal probably means Barnsley will be looking to build not sell. Next target please. Most interesting window for a long time. COYB

I see that Martyn Waghorn was linked with Bristol City, he would be a good buy. As for Clayton Donaldson, a great player but 32yrs old & Birmingham would want too much for him. I think Mick could get a good signing from the lower league, I'm sure he will have targets in mind. Cummings at Hibs is a great player, there has been plenty of interest in him but not sure if Hibs would sell

How about Billy Sharp? Still younger than Murph and a proven goalscorer, last season with Sheff Utd got 21 in 44
