McCarthy: Litany of Reasons Why Clubs Won't Let Players Move
Friday, 6th Jan 2017 06:00

Blues manager Mick McCarthy says clubs have come up with a variety of reasons why they won’t let their players go when he has made enquiries as he looks to add to his squad during the January transfer window.

McCarthy’s primary objective is to add to his options up front with Daryl Murphy having joined Newcastle in August, while a second striker is also thought to be on his radar with Luke Varney having moved on to Burton Albion this week with the 34-year-old’s short-term contract coming to an end.

Rotherham’s Danny Ward and Fulham’s Cauley Woodrow are believed to be top of his list with discussions believed to be ongoing.

The Town boss has also said he is looking to add to other areas of his squad, among them central midfield.

We understand Brighton’s Richie Towell is one of those being eyed, the Irishman having been unable to break into the Seagulls’ side since moving from Dundalk a year ago.

The 25-year-old made one FA Cup start and one play-off sub appearance last season, but one Championship match as an unused sub and two Checkatrade Trophy games for their U23s is the nearest he has come to the first team this term.

Goalscoring midfielder Towell was watched by Blues boss McCarthy in 2014 before he signed a one-year deal with Dundalk.

So far McCarthy has been unable to add anyone to his squad and at yesterday’s press conference said he didn’t expect to do so before Saturday’s FA Cup tie with Lincoln with clubs rebuffing their interest in players for a mix of reasons.

“So far we’re not having any joy, we’re just getting the same custard pies in the face,” he said.

Why is that? “I could give you a litany of reasons - they haven’t got their players, they’re looking to sign somebody in, they haven’t got a big enough squad, he’s in for cover, I’ve got an injury or a couple of African Nations [call-ups mean other players aren’t available], there are loads of reasons why.

“And they’re legitimate reasons why, I’m not giving them as excuses. All the reasons I would have used or have used in the past.”

January is notoriously a hard month in which to do business but McCarthy says sometimes the completion of one deal leads to movement on others.

“I think so and I also think that the ones who have got the player that people are wanting will be asking for the absolute maximum. I don’t blame them at all, as we would,” he added.

“And sometimes it gets near the end of the window and it’s almost inevitable that they’re going to go and then they do go for maybe a bit more than has been [offered] and a bit less than they were wanting and then it’s like a pack of cards going over when deals start to get done. But we’ll see. We’ll see what happens.”

It’s no secret that Town are after a striker with Murphy having moved on in the summer, does that mean clubs are upping their prices knowing the Blues’ situation?

“Yes, of course, and Luke Varney’s gone to Burton,” McCarthy continued. “That was always likely, though. When we signed him he was an emergency signing really, he answered the call.

“He’s scored a couple for us and he’s been great around the place as usual. I thank him for that, put that on the record, he’s been great.

“But we signed him to that date because we knew that would probably happen anyway because he wants to go back and be up near his family.”

When questioned on his interest in Millers frontman Ward, McCarthy has remained tightlipped: “I wouldn’t tell you if there was.”

He added: “I won’t talk about anybody else’s players because that’s grossly unfair. If there was a manager talking about David McGoldrick or Skusey or one of my players I’d be seriously upset with them. In fact the first thing I would do is ring him.”

Asked whether it is a case of watching this space for further developments, McCarthy said: “It is.”

Useless tw&t

Get out of our club. Players that are here don't wanna play for you so why would any come here.

Let our new manager bring in his players to replace the dross this dinosaur won't drop while we're flying so high !!!!

Heard all this before in the last couple of windows, "we're gonna sign him", "we're looking at a new player in this position" "we know we need to strengthen" and 100 more sound bites.

To then be slapped in the face as other clubs suddenly sneak in ahead of us, offer a little bit more money & beat us to a signature, to then be told by the club, "there was never any truth in the rumour we wanted to sign him anyway"

Then in the last few days of the window, we announce the panic signing of 2 or 3 loans of players that bring nothing to the squad other than "great character" someone who's "great to have around the place"

Just hope I'm wrong, let's see...... I'll believe it when I see it.....

Why would other managers be talking about Skuse?

OwainG1992 added 07:35 - Jan 6
Because MattinLondon though he aint the most exciting he is a solid DM. People like to slate Skuse but it aint his fault he's lumbered with Douglas. Look at when it was him and Bru looked a lot better.

Might be worth remembering we got a good price for murphy - we will have to pay a good fee to replace him.

Also shows we had no plan B for the Murthy exit! The signs had been there that he might be on his way. Was that poor management? Have we now got to accept Barnsley bullSh-t!

Very late on,Murphy handed in a transfer request.ITFC took the decision it was best if Murphy didn't want to play for Ipswich,it was best all round to accept a very good offer.
However,it was too late to get another incoming player. Not poor management, these things happen. Now is the time to sort it out.

I'd like to know the reasons why some managers don't move.

Prebbs007 you do my head in. You obviously dont actually go to matches or you would see the amount of effort the players put in under MM.

When you don't want to spend money you are bound to get knock backs and excuses. Why should anyone assist with our master plan of hiring cheap and cheerful cast offs.

Sometimes in life just a few changes will make all the difference , I don't think we are a million miles away from doing well, the players do put in a shift we just lack some quality in key areas. I do however worry about what the club offers players and that we cannot compete with even smaller clubs. Is the manager selling the club? Or is Evans ripping us all off, I suspect the latter sadly.

ffretwell.... really because after the Fulham game even the strongest MM supporters were saying they had never seen such a lack lustre display of effort and commitment from an Ipswich side in many years ?

On the signing front I cannot believe managers and clubs wont let there players go unless they have replacemnents or cover to make their squad weaker , its as if they know what they are doing !!
Same old excuses that come out every year , soon it will be the "we couldn't find anyone better than what we have " joke
Biggest change we need is a new manager with new ideas to get what is a capable squad going

What you say is true geminimustang but also remember there had been Murthy speculation for the last couple of transfer windows, Mick did say of course he would want to go double his wages sercurity for his family ect. These things dont happen overnight, as we well know from our own transfer dealings. What we now know if a decent bid comes in for one of our players it will be accepted to set against the running loss of our club. Accounts dont lie.

I imagine the main excuse we get is 'How much?, You're having a laugh!'
2

mrshallisfit added 09:42 - Jan 6
Odd that while we have to wait for other clubs to get in replacements we are quite happy to sell on such a pivotal player as Murphy without similar back-up.

First of all let me declare that I am an old and a very loyal supporter of the town. I do not admire MM and think his style and his football stink and we would be much better off without him and to get entertaining football back at Portman Road.
Now the bit most of you will not like. With respect the club have not announced anyone they are trying to sign. It is all media speculation including this site, it is therefore ridiculous for the majiority of your complaints to be made in this way. The only complaints that are currently valid are concerning events we do know about (Murphy and Varney) which do show a lack of management on behalf of the club (I cannot say if this is MM or ME).
Given this , lets wait and see what ensues. I hope it is better than I expect it to be !
