Agent Says No Town Contact With Dutch Boss But Aware of Rumours
Saturday, 8th Apr 2017 12:33

Maurice Steijn, the manager of Dutch side VVV-Venlo, has emerged as a potential candidate to succeed Mick McCarthy if the Town boss moves on in the summer. Steijn’s agent says he has heard of the Blues’ apparent interest “through the grapevine” but says there has so far been no contact.

Steijn and VVV are all but certain to be confirmed as champions of the Jupiler League (Dutch second tier) with a lead of eight points and only five games remaining.

The 43-year-old took over as manager a VVV in the summer of 2014, having been sacked by ADO Den Haag in the February of the same year.

Steijn had been a midfielder with ADO as well as NAC Breda and FC Kranenburg during his playing days. He returned to ADO to start his coaching career and progressed through the ranks to become their first-team boss in 2011.

His agent, Rodger Linse, says he has heard whispers of Town’s interest but up to now no more than that.

“I heard through the grapevine also that Maurice is mentioned as a candidate at Ipswich Town, but there has been no contact,” he said.

Linse says Steijn has enjoyed his time with VVV making progress year on year: “In his time as coach of ADO Den Haag Maurice lacked the support of the technical management and the board. He therefore had to do a lot of work that really was not in his job description.

“At VVV-Venlo he has had the support of the technical management and the board, and therefore he could build a team.

“In the first year that led to qualification for the play-offs, as they did in the second season when VVV finished second behind Sparta Rotterdam, the champions. And this season the dream of the title is probably coming true.”

Steijn is contracted to VVV for another year but with his deal allowing him to move on if he is offered the prospect of making a step up financially or football-wise. However, talks regarding a new contract are planned.

“Soon there will be talks anyway, because the board of VVV wants to renew his contract,” Linse added.

Current Blues boss McCarthy has another year on his Blues contract - with the club having an option for a further two seasons - but he has said he will considering his future once Town are safe and having talked to owner Marcus Evans.

Given McCarthy’s possible departure, Town are likely to be looking around for potential successors.

Wow... I'd want to see what that would be like. This guy wants to play football. And by that I mean in a totally different way than we have seen in recent time.

Young and Dutch. That alone should be good enough, but winning the Dutch 2nd tier as well, he must know wht he's doing. Sounds positive.

Obviously a gamble but I'd take a Dutch style of football at PR over MM's style any day!!

Let's be honest if MM does leave in the Summer. ANY incoming manager would be in dream land for 6 months at least, so many Town fans want a change we'd welcome anyone who wants to play "football" :)

Dutch football not in a good state of affairs currently but as others have mentioned wouldn't bring a defense minded game that McCarthy offers, would be a gamble though with limited knowledge of this competitive league - other foreign managers have come and gone in this quickly. Just a rumour though.

You never know MM could be kicked up stairs as director of football which means we would not have to pay him to leave he could just go to the end of contract and go and save another club not.

I think without a shadow of a doubt that Micks time is up. Even if he had millions to spend I fear that the style of football would still be dire.

But can people stop with the personal abuse. For all of his faults, he kept us up and somehow made us challengers for the play-offs. Is a bit of respect too much to ask for.

If Mick wants respect he should stop winding up the fans and clean his mouth out.

I would absolutely love this to happen, his current side are extremely attack minded and score freely! Not saying we would win this and that but we would see entertaining football, what a bloody relief that would be after the last 2 years or so!

The idea of a young Dutch manager who wants to play football sounds appealing but what worries me is whether many if any of the current playing staff at Portman Road could adapt to the passing and moving style after 4 years of hoof ball.

Would be an interesting choice. About time we had a foreign coach, would spread the net wider on signings abd would hopefully go the same way as Wagner at Huddersfield. Only downside is that it would take him a while to get used to the rough and tumble of this league.

As underwhelming a suggestion as any I've heard : some unknown foreigner with no knowledge of English football, currently doing a mediocre job at an obscure Dutch club. No thank you : he'd be gone by Christmas anyway with us rock bottom. McCarthy will be here for another 3 years anyway : I predict 9th / 11th / 11th finishes, with crowds of around 10k by the end. There is no light at the end of this tunnel for the foreseeable future ; probably not in my lifetime.

I'd happily row a boat over the pond to bring him over here and rescue us from Mick!!! Maybe he might be able to bring over a new Frans Thijssen or Arnold Mühren type of player, wouldn't that be sweet!!! This is potentially the best story I've read on this site in a long long time! Some of the current crop of players would find it hard to adjust to a more pretty style of play, but there's always Colchester for them! :-)

100%, young Dutch manager, if nothing else at least we can be guaranteed no boring football and that's all we ask. Would acquire young signings on a budget and they are walking away with the league to be honest

Feels a little like an Agent trying to manipulate a better deal for his client with his current club to me.

Christ the early bird season ticket sales must be crap if ITFC are feeding us new manager
rumours already.
Mick needs to go before 17th April or a lot will not renew.
