Steijn: I've Not Spoken to Ipswich
Friday, 14th Apr 2017 10:17

Maurice Steijn, the manager of Dutch side VVV-Venlo, says rumoured interest in him from Town is “not an issue” and that he hasn’t spoken to the Blues.

Last week’s Steijn’s agent said he was aware of whispers linking Town and his client “through the grapevine” but said there had been no contact.

VVV will confirm promotion to the Eredivisie (Dutch top flight) if they win away against RKC Waalwijk this evening and look certain to be crowned Eerste Divisie champions.

Quizzed by Dutch TV channel L1 on the Town links, Steijn said: "It's not an issue. I have not spoken to Ipswich Town. First I want to win the match against RKC and then the championship.”

But VVV technical director, Stan Valckx, admitted that he expects interest in the 43-year-old: “I keep in mind that he might go. Good players can leave and it is the same with good coaches.”

Steijn is contracted to VVV for another year but with his deal allowing him to move on if he is offered the prospect of making a step up financially or football-wise. However, talks regarding a new contract are planned.

Current Blues boss McCarthy has another year on his Blues contract - with the club having an option for a further two seasons - but he said in January he will considering his future once Town are safe and having talked to owner Marcus Evans.

However, on Wednesday, McCarthy insisted had no intention of moving on of his own volition stating, “I’m not walking away from it. I’ll be here and I’ll be planning for next season and I’m looking forward to it.”

This link is so random if there isn't a lot of truth in it. Why would dutch to being asking him the question unless something has been linked. McCarthy has been making his comments recently because he knows he is going and maybe doesn't want to lose the rest of the dressing room before we are safe. A relegation doesn't look good on a C.V.

With regard to players. He tried to ruin Sears, plays everyone out of position, favours "more experienced" players, probably fills the younger players with self doubt and disillusionment (Bishop, dozzell, Emmanuel, Crowe, Patterson, to name a few). Clashes horribly with others: Best, Stewart, Pitman, Malarcyk. What's happened to Bru? He had a great season a couple of years ago.

It's time for a change and I think it would be business suicide for Evans to stick with the current regime. Steijn sounds like the perfect antidote to the poison that is slowly filling the veins of our club.

Seriously. WTF?

All the "yes pleases" and "dream signings"....

Why? He's managing a 2nd tier Dutch team with some success in a league which is nowhere near the same standard as the Championship. Has he previously provided success at bigger clubs (genuine question) or can anyone tell me how this guy has avoided being picked up by any big clubs up to this point? Just because he's different to MM does not mean he'll be successful. More than that he could have us relegated if he is handed the same hefty war chest that MM has been working with.

On top of all of that this is just speculation and the MM-outers will lap that up at this point.

A big difference between wanting better for the club and being anti Ipswich pragmatic, nobody is anti Ipswich that a ridiculous thing to say, hope everyone down arrows you, wanting a manager who respects fans and has some idea of creating a good side unlike MM is not anti anything its wanting better. to even mentioning his name in the same comment as SBR is disgraceful and show you know nothing.

Unable to get gist of itfc chorry's post.

itsonlyme however, like me and many others looks like wants MM to go;but thinks that because he has said he wont be,it is the end of the matter.

I know this arrogant Yorkshireman acts as though he is running the show, and not his boss Mr Evans who is keeping a lower profile than usual following the ticket debacle.

Our great leader sic has espoused in the EADT; refuting claims that he has ruined the club, states that after he saved Town from relegation, and had three top ten finishes,is a bit miffed that after one season people have turned their backs on him;as he considers he has done a good job

However he goes onto say that he doesn't read the local press or listen to the views of local radio;but has to answer their questions at news conferences. He ended by saying that if he p....s a lot of people off then so be it!

I feel that all he is doing is setting out a marker, basically giving his boss the ultimatum, either pay me off in full or I will be here next year regardless.

If he had a more conciliatory attitude, rather than being so belligerent, then I would have more sympathy with him.He has after all had to put up with a raft of injuries this season, and we do not know who's fault it was that Murph still hasn't been satisfactorily replaced. Then we have the owner only giving his Manager loose change in the transfer market, despite having regularly sold the best players.Something Mr Sheepshanks said wouldn't have to happen when he unfortunately sold Mr Evans to us shareholders.

I am therefor hopeful that the above rumour will eventually materialize. If not then somebody else.I would even give the brothers from Lincoln a chance;but they would need a Director of Football, somebody like George Burley, due to their lack of experience.

In the long term I should like to see a certain young man from Fram buy into our once great club;but I am dreaming now lol !!!

Well I hope that if MM stays to see out his contract, (please God no) then I think most fans will not invest in Season tickets, or attend home matches, I see this response as the only answer to shake up ME, and he gives Mick & Terry notice to quit at the end of the season, and as for Steijn rumours lets hope there true, and we can rid ourselves of the current incumbent, trying to manages our beloved Ipswich Town

Of course there has been contact. They have to say i know nothing. Only way this happens if this rumoured takeover happens. Not getting too excited though. Nowadays Town love to disappoint.

Seasider, agree totally. Pragmatic, I want MM out, as I want basically to be entertained, not the awful tripe that is served up each week. If that makes me stupid or thick or whatever you want to call me, then ok. I want a manager that plays half decent football and if this Dutchman can do it, irrespective of what league he coaches in, then so be it!

@Bohslegend : You mention the "MM-outers" above, sguesting that you want hI'm to remain at the helm.
Do you still believe MM is the best man for the job?
Is it just the fact that this link is to a young relatively unknown manager in the Dutch second tier that bothers you or would you feel the same about some young manager who is having success at a lower level in the English leagues, such as the guy at Lincoln?
Are you happy with how the team is performing under MM?
Are you happy with the quality of the football on display?
Do you recognise the link between falling attendances and the decisions made by MM?
Do you believe he has the full support of the dresing room?
Have you been happy with MM press conferences and in particular his comments about supporters who have been critical of him?

bluesi added 14:25 - Apr 14
bohslegend- I just think it shows how fed up town fans are with MM's style of play, tactics etc... A fresh Dutch manager, albeit without any major honours, it would at least give Town fans some fresh hope of attractive football, which we once used to produce! Maybe it's desperation, but anything must be better than what we have at the moment surely!!!

Sadly, mick McCarthy seems unlikely to be going anywhere.

midastouch added 14:52 - Apr 14
I'd rather pay to watch more attractive entertaining football in League 1 than diabolical negative football in the Championship. If we have to risk taking 1 step back to take 2 forwards so be it. Anything to get rid of Dino and to get in somebody more progressive that hopefully wants the team to play football on the deck rather than up in the sky! Dutch football is more about passing than hoofing so we know any manager from Holland would set the team up to pass rather than hoof!

Let's admit that none of really know how this would go if he did come in.

The fact that so many positive comments have been added shows just how bad things are under MM. We'd rather have a punt on someone nobody knows than stick with what we've got.i say we have a go for it. Wouldn't need to pay him as much as MM, and just give him a year or two year deal so it's a cheap exit if needed. The news would give the club a huge positive lift

Hmmm I think I better chip in here (although I much prefer to stay out this here seemingly pretty soon about to Core-Melt-Down sort of a debate, to be perfectly honest! LOL) .... but since I've actually watched live streams of Venlo about a handful of times last season and another handful this season ...Noooo! not because I'm a 'Dutch Uncle' :-) or have any sort of Dutch connections!, but rather for the simple "ludomania-related" :-) reason that I fairly frequently find myself betting on them (and for the past 2 years they have actually been a pretty "safe" bet: to A) either score at least over 1.5 goals themselves, or B) being part in a game where there is scored over 2.5 goals or even fairly often over 3.5 goals, or C) some form of 'Asian Handicap' with them as eventual winners) as predominantly the 'Eerste Divisie' plays mostly on Mondays and Fridays i.e. days where typically is not very much other European football action going on & and to possibly bet on.

Now Mr. Steijn arrived in Venlo for the start of the 2014/2015 season, having previously been employed as manager with the fairly globally '"inconspicuous" ADO Den Haag (whom he played just about 100 games for as a midfielder in the later part of the 90's btw) since 2011.

Anyway, at least during these last 2 years at Venlo I can thus partly attest to that in principal, Mr. Steijn seems to pretty much advocate the ****DIRECT OPPOSITE**** football style & mayhaps even ideology of what the Dino McCarthy prehistorically does ...and have been doing throughout this in his own dinosauric mind soooo über "glorious" 25 years in management!

I.E roughly put the tactical mindset of Stejin's (in my viewer experience) seems to be = "Attack Attack Attack first, Defend later ...maybe!" ---- as starkly opposed to the Dino's = "Defend Defend Defend first (and as we all know & seen innumerous times often with 7-8 defensive minded/preoccupied players on the field at once?!), Attack later ... MAYBE!
"
Thus with 2 games remaining of this here campaign where Steijn's very attack-minded looking 'proper blokes' :-) have already won promotion, Venlo has thus scored a rather staggering 155+ goals over these last 2 x 38 games ... HOWEVER please do take into your consideration that The Netherlands as a football nation, especially nowadays!!!, and their 1st + 2nd tier leagues etc. thus in particular, is widely (in)famously known for neither in general paying all that much attention to / or concentrating on defending, but more importantly nor in genereal FOSTERING any stand-out like great & strong defensive defenders!!! I.E. quality defensively strong defenders currently both in the national side but obviously also on the club level have for quite long now imho been FAR & FEW between .... say just to perhaps exaggerate a bit really since the generation of Dutch football in which an for instance then active Jaap Stamp were enjoying his PSV heydays (1996-1998), and among defenders as such was spearheading. And also during said period, alas in his capacity as a super strong defender, actually won himself the acclaimed 'Dutch Footballer of the Year' award!, which normally goes to someone ehmm shall we say a BIT more nimble & offensively creative, over there! :-)
