Rangers Striker Waghorn Set to Join Blues Sunday, 6th Aug 2017 23:37
Rangers are reported to have accepted a bid of around £1 million from Town for striker Martyn Waghorn.
According to the Daily Mail, the Blues have fought off opposition from Waghorn’s local club Sunderland, where he began his career, to land the 27-year-old frontman.
Town boss Mick McCarthy revealed on Friday that he was close to landing another striker, having sold Brett Pitman to Portsmouth last month.
At Saturday's game neither McCarthy nor MD Ian Milne would be drawn on the identity of the target - although Milne did reveal it was someone who was a familiar name - but we understand the Blues are expecting to confirm the signing on Monday.
South Shields-born Waghorn came through the Black Cats' youth system and made a handful of Premier League appearances while at the Stadium of Light as well as having spells on loan at Charlton and Leicester before joining the Foxes on a permanent basis for £3 million in August 2010.
The 5ft 10in tall former England U19 and U21 international was loaned to Hull City, Millwall and Wigan while a Leicester player before joining the Latics full-time on a free transfer in April 2014.
He moved on to Rangers in July 2015, signing a three-year deal. While with the Ibrox club Waghorn made 63 starts and 15 sub appearances, scoring 44 goals, 16 of them last season.
During 2015/16 Waghorn, who can also operate in wide areas, helped Rangers to carry off the Scottish Championship and Scottish Challenge Cup. He was also named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year for the Championship that season.
Waghorn was left out of the 18 for today's 2-1 victory over Motherwell, the Glasgow giants' opening league fixture of the season.
Previously he started the first leg of the Europa League qualifier against Niedercorn from Luxembourg at end of June but was left out of the second match the following week.
The Rangers squad is currently in a state of flux with manager Pedro Caixinha, who was appointed in March, looking to offload a number of players in order to bring in his own recruits.
The Blues have already benefited from Rangers' summer fire sale by signing Joe Garner, the scorer of a debut winner in yesterday's 1-0 victory over Birmingham, back in June.
Meanwhile, MK Dons blog On The Dot claims Town are closing in on the loan signing of young Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes.
The 19-year-old England U18 international spent a successful spell on loan with Milton Keynes in League One last season and is set to be sent out on loan again this season to gain further experience. Barnsley could also be showing interest.
While the addition of a striker has been the Blues' priority, another wideman is also certain to be on McCarthy's wish-list.

Rangers fans must hate us this summer. Doesn't exactly fit the description of a tall powerful target man. But at 27, a £1 mill pricetag isn't too bad. Don't know too much about him as a player so I wont judge too much. Although if it's true I'm glad that we've found a striker on a permanent rather than a loan.
An astute signing if he comes. Always caused Ipswich problems when he played against us. Powerful and with a real eye for goal. No Jon Dadi, so we'll have to keep the ball on the deck - great news! 27, so good age. Bit susceptible to hamstring and knee injuries. Keep him fit and he'll potentially score a hat-full.
I somehow doubt he was even on mccarthy's wish list at the start of the summer. He's not the tall target man that McCarthy has previously alluded to. This smacks of desperation and asking any new players if anyone's got a mate that can play (like Bru did with Toure). Having said that, I'd take Waghorn now over who we could potentially get if we miss out on him, and have to scrape the loan barrel on 31st August....Jonny Williams again anyone.
Would be pleased with this if it happens. He has always been a handful when he has played against us in the past and would give us another option whilst bolstering a threadbare in number squad. We still need a six foot plus lighthouse as well though because Waghorn is not a target man.
If true a very good signing. Waghorn much like Garner is a formidable opponent. Certainly someone you prefer to be alongside rather than against. Pleased to see this would be a permanent deal. I was dreading another loan.
Oooo I hope so :) don't really know the player but he looks like he had a very impressive past couple of seasons. Let's hope it can transition to us. Be interesting to see the strike partnership afterwards as I think Sears and Garner played really well on Saturday. As for Barnes if he is half as good as the last youngster we had from Leicester ;)
First thought was "I wonder who lifts more, him or Hyam?"
Not my kind of forward but for the money I'm sure he'd suit Mick's style. Not much else in our price range that isn't a huge gamble, and when we are desperately short of strikers a gamble maybe not the wisest choice.
Not the target man the team seem to lack but perhaps not getting such a player signals a change in tactics from McCarthy? Could this be the beginning of , ssshhhh, 'passing football'? 😫
Sounds like a decent signing! IMO our squad now feels positive with plenty of options. With everyone fit, and with the emergence of Downes, it's not easy to decide who to leave out. Starting 11? Bart Spence Chambers Webster Kenlock Ward Huws Adeyemi Celina Garner Waghorn
Leaving the following out: Iorfa, Smith, Knudsen, Skuse, Downes, Dozzell, Bishop, McGoldrick, Sears
27 years old, reasonable fee (in today's crazy market), potential for a ready-made partnership with Garner. Should be able to recoup the fee if it doesn't work out.
Used to watch him at this level when he was at Leicester. Often seemed a handful albeit without being prolific. That was a while ago so don't know how much he and his game have changed since but I'd keep an open mind at this stage.
I like the sound of Waghorn. He has a good scoring record and is used to playing with Garner. We'll need to send 2 or 3 of our defenders up for set plays. It's encouraging!!
This looks like a very attacking player. 63 starts, 44 goals is a fantastic record. So with these 4 [if he comes] they'll be a lot of competition for places up front but my guess would be for Barnsley, Garner and Sears as both had good games on Saturday. Sign him please.
strong and powerful now we are signing him, Fat and useless when he played for the opposition. Rangers as they were coming up through the leagues again were playing some easy opposition so I am eager to see how he does back in the championship - Honestly it is not a name that brings joy to my heart.
