Harrison's Pompey Move Confirmed
Friday, 21st Jun 2019 17:10

Striker Ellis Harrison’s move to Portsmouth has been confirmed with the Welshman signing a three-year deal at Fratton Park with Pompey having paid £450,000 for the Welshman.

Harrison travelled for talks and to undergo a medical yesterday with the loose ends on the deal for an officially undisclosed fee which is understood to be in the region of £450,000 tied up today.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Blues from Bristol Rovers for £750,000 last summer, was targeted by Pompey manager Kenny Jackett when he was still with the Pirates, again on loan in January and once more early in the close season.

Pompey's assistant manager Joe Gallen told their official website: “We’re really pleased to get Ellis here — he’s someone we’ve kept tabs on for around 18 months now.

“We’ve always liked him as a player. He can fit into our system as a number nine and hold the ball up, win headers and score goals.

“He also brings added mobility to that position and has the right attitude, which is really important for us and fits into our philosophy.

“Ellis has a good record in League One and all the attributes we need. We feel he has the whole package and can add to our squad.

“With the players that we’re starting to bring in, we’re confident that they can make the difference for us in getting out of this league.”

Harrison added: “Coming here is a no-brainer. I’ve got a manager who trusts me and has put his full faith in me, so I want to repay that.

“I’m very confident in my own ability and now it’s up to me to prove that on a Saturday. I don’t feel like I’ve hit my peak yet and there’s more to come.

“I didn’t really get going at Ipswich and show my full potential, but I was hindered by injury a lot of the time.

“Now I’m looking to really push on with Pompey next season and show everyone exactly what I can do.

“I remember playing at Fratton Park and it was very loud. I was trying to shout to the boys and they couldn’t hear me. Having those fans behind you — you can’t really ask for much more.

“It’s a new start for me and hopefully we can be pushing to get into the Championship, which is where the club deserves to be.”

He says he hopes he might benefit form playing alongside another ex-Blue at Pompey: “I’ve watched guys like Brett Pitman, who’s played at a high level for a number of years, and it’s something I can learn from.”

Former Welsh U21 international Harrison started last season in Paul Hurst’s XI but appeared very infrequently after Paul Lambert took charge with injuries sidelining him for spells.

Meanwhile, Blues keeper Bartosz Bialkowski's move to Millwall is not expected to be confirmed until early next week, although appears all but done.

Elsewhere, former Motherwell midfielder Alex Rodriguez Gorrin, who was linked with the Blues and Pompey earlier in the month, has joined fellow League One side Oxford United on a two-year contract.

Undisclosed sum probably means that we've sold him for next to nothing.

Will be lots of add ons......promoted to premiership, makes 100 Welsh caps, etc. Not likely to see anything then.

Must admit, I have a horrible feeling about this one. I can accept that he may of wanted to leave, but I'm worried about selling someone like him with his league 1 record to a promotion rival. I really hope I'm wrong, but this one isn't sitting right with me

I worry about Evans as a business man buy high sell low .I thought it was the other way around.

Hope Ellis does well for Pompey, no matter what happened here

I wish Ellis well. Never really given a consistent chance, so no surprise he moves on. Lower fee or not, it is still yet more revenue to help Evans fund the shortfall caused by relegation. Wages saved too.

anyone know the likely fee? stupid to sell to our rivals imo, hope i'm proven very wrong!

I loved his goal against the hammers last pre season and regret never seeing him at his best for us. Although I would rather have seen Jackson go than Harrison, I can only assume he just doesn't fit in to Lambert system properly. That said I bet he will have a 20+ season this year.

I hope we don't end up regretting this one AGAIN! And why sell cheap to a rival (which it seems we most probably are given the fee is undisclosed) when Pompey are about to get 5 million for Clarke? I realise we need to make changes to the squad given the big loss in earnings now we've dropped a league. But given all the fairly recent players we've let move on for next to nothing (or often nothing!) which have subsequently gone on to make a mockery of our transfer dealings, I always worry if the club are not learning from past mistakes. That said, Lambert has made a judgement call and I guess we have to trust in that. I'll probably get shot down in flames for saying this but I can think of one or two much more experienced players (on much higher wages I imagine) that I'd of rather seen go ahead of Ellis. One of them only passes sideways and scores so few goals that a miller with missing fingers from an industrial workshop accident could still count them on one hand.

The wrong striker has left. My opinion, for what it's worth is that he occasionally looked half decent when fit. Think he will score a few for Pompey.

Given away to a rival, hard to fathom. There better be hefty add-ons for when they are promoted and he scores more than 20 goals in the coming season...

No loss what so ever. The more of Hur*t garbage to go - the better. Hopefully we can offload Nsiala, Donacien, and Jackson soon too.

Any body else thin that was a dig at PL?
He is going to score against us in both legs this season.

leftie no, a lot of players say that stuff.

450k seems a very good price for a player of that age. I bet the Pompey manager is very happy. Surely they would of paid at least 500k or 600k if we'd of dug our feet in. Pompey have got a bit of money to spend now after selling Clarke.

All the best Ellis (hopefully not against us)...didn't think he started enough games to be judged and let go.

If Jackson went we would get nowhere near the 1.6 million we paid for him, so I suppose the lesser loss money man went

Looks like I'm in the minority here when I say that I'd rather keep Jackson anyway. Admittedly we didn't see enough of Harrison but I just don't fancy him as a ruthless goalscorer in the same way that someone like Norwood is. I could see Jackson doing quite well in League 1 if he manages to get a bit of momentum going.

Good luck Ellis, shame it did not work out, I think this will come back and bite ITFC on the backside!

£450k is more than he is worth IMO, but if we paid £750 then it is crazy business

Ipswichheritage I agree accept Nsiala I think he will play 40+ games next season and keep Chambers out

Ultimately with Norwood incoming, we needed to offload a striker. I imagine Harrison is the only striker another club is willing to pay for. We've got Norwood, Sears, Jackson. If we only play one through the middle then that's enough. We need to remember we have Drinan, Morris, and Folami that all need to be knocking on the door this year if they want a career at Ipswich. We've also got Brown who looks like he could make an impression come the end of the year. We need to pave a route for these guys to break through.

Agree for L1 Harrison is proven. Don't think he will ever be prolific in the Champ but equally we didn't see the best of him and if Sears or Lankaster were fit he'd be 3rd choice....

i remember paul lambert saying something sarcastic about his confidence one time in an interview basically alluding to being over confident read into that what may i was thinking is he trying to say hes a tad cocksure ? and it just didnt sit right,so im guessing that he had other ideas about ellis

I really liked this lad. Ok perhaps he didn't quite live up to his debut against Wet Spam but had great energy levels and has somewhat a proven record at Division 1 level and young enough to improve. Both Jackson and Norwood unproven at Division 1 but Norwood has all the signs of being able to step up even if he only scores half the tally he score last year for tranmere it will prove a good signing for us.

Back to Harrison, I can't help think that his sale will release wages and provide some space to bring in another striker of proven ability. Maybe Keene or Connor Washington who both would be good signings at this level, if so then letting Ellis go does make some sense
