Ashton: First-Day Crowd Roar Will Be Special
Tuesday, 6th Jul 2021 12:47

Blues CEO Mark Ashton says it will be special to hear the roar of the Portman Road crowd when supporters return for the opening game of the season against Morecambe on Saturday 7th August.

Yesterday, prime minister Boris Johnson announced that football grounds will not have their capacity limited by Covid rules from July 19th.

“It’s obviously great news that we can start the season with supporters back in the stadium,” Ashton told the club site.

“Football is all about the fans. The game is nothing without them and I know everyone connected to Ipswich Town can’t wait to see supporters back at Portman Road.

“When I arrived at the club for my first day here, I looked around the stadium and even though it was empty, there was something atmospheric about it.

“I thought then how fantastic it will be to see the players walk out on the first day of the season and hear that roar from the crowd.

“It’s going to be special to hear that. I can’t wait and I know the manager and the players feel the same.”

Or at least some fairly loud muttering.

Football has felt empty and plastic ever since restrictions were put in place. I hope to actually enjoy a football season for the first time in a while.

It will be really nice to get back to Portman Road again and indeed the roar from the crowd on the opening day will be something special.
Twelve months ago I wouldn't have cared if I didn't watch another Town game but we now have so much to be optimistic about.
I think it could quite some experience for Morecambe too. Hopefully they will be like the proverbial rabbits in headlights!

Ashton loves getting in front of the press, usually an interview is followed up with a signing announcement... Or am I living in a dream world?

“On my command, unleash hell!”

Let's take the roof off on the 7th August and give the new squad a taste of what us Tractor Boys and Girls are all about.

You are concerned about getting abuse for not wearing a mask. A lot of us feel the same for wearing a mask. Also will those not wearing a mask be willing to wear one if the person next to them feels uneasy that they are not. The new health secretary said he would carry one for such an incident.

The trouble is masks prevent spreading of infection from someone infectious but are not so effective at stopping a person being infected. That's why some or many will be concerned about those not wearing masks sitting next to them

It will feel strange going back to PR since my last game against Burton. I feel nervous already and there's still weeks to go lol. Really looking forward to it and a virtually new team as well.

We are about to hit 50,000 new infections a day. Worried the decision is political not rational and science based. Worked for the same company as Boris for 9 years and everyone felt he was self serving…. I'm being kind with that assessment.

So looking forward to the season. If we can make it a place opposing teams fear, then all the better. Fortress Portman Road.

I get the feeling we have a lot of anti virus and anti Vaxxers on here? I bet you lot all voted for brexit and love Trump? And yes I know that's a sweeping generalisation but I got called a budgie for just thinking a player might not be that great. I played for the football team I didn't ever want to be in the cheerleading squad and like most of social media and society now, anyone who disagrees with you is your enemy. This site used to be fun and have debates where people could actually acknowledge a reasoned argument. Everywhere the restrictions have been lifted infections have shot up. Prepare for another autumn lockdown.

Very disappointed we've missed out on Wyke!!

Think we need more signings through the door before the end of the next two weeks.

It might be for everybody who is new to the club but it won't be that much different from recent seasons but it will have a different feel with so many new players coming in and new ownership.

Expectations for this season might differ...so many players bedding in and getting to know each other and Cook learning about each player as each day goes by...for me though play-offs have to be minimum requirement regardless of what I've mentioned, to be in the third tier of English football and to be in it 3 seasons without making the top 6 will be unforgiveable!

Dog: Viewed from the perspective of an "outsider," Brexit is a total disaster. But I agree with you about Trump!
