Fry: Town Among Clubs After Taylor
Monday, 12th Jun 2023 11:39

Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry says he expects midfielder Jack Taylor to move to the Championship this summer with clubs including Town interested in the 24-year-old.

In March, Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed his club had turned down almost £2 million for Taylor in January from a League One club who had made four offers with Town having known to have been chasing the former Barnet man.

Fry says he anticipates Taylor, who has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for their June internationals, moving to the second tier following Peterborough’s League One play-off disappointment.

“I expect Jack Taylor to end up in the Championship and there are clubs after him, including Ipswich who bid three times for him in January,” Fry told the Peterborough Telegraph.

“It’s been very quiet overall though. Clubs don’t want to pay players’ wages in the summer if they can help it.”

We understand Taylor, who has a year left on his contract at London Road, remains on the Blues’ radar as they look to strengthen ahead of 2023/24, despite the expectation that Massimo Luongo, who joined Town on a short-term deal in January, will sign the new terms he was offered last month.

They absolutely love talking about us at Peterborough, don't they?

24, 6ft 1, 17 goals in 125 for Peterborough
Seems decent although the Fry- McAnthony jibber-jabber is off putting. would they consider Jackson as part of the deal ?

I have to say, I would be terrible at building a team, because I wouldn't even be thinking to bring in a player to replace Morsy or Luongo, because you aren't paying 2 million for a squad player at this level. Obviously, KM knows better than all of us, especially me.

Depends on who are we moving out from our current Midfield collective - we don't need him if we stay as we are but I can see some movement ahead

do you take Taylor and forget about Massimo? Or does Taylor give us the longevity once Massimo's two year extension ends?

Rumour mill starting and being fed by absolute maters at manipulation and financial profiteering .
Mind you, over the years they do seem to have turned up some valuable talent to sell on and perpetuate success .
Nothing to be concerned about here. : ITFC top team ( US owners down) will have strategy and plans well thought through .

Fry is ever the salesman trying to bump the price up by claiming that there's lots of interest.

We went in for him in the summer & (apparently) with three £1m -£2m offers in January just gone, so it's safe to assume that McKenna not only wants him, but wants/sees him as a Championship player for us.
He is a different type of player to Luongo, so I wouldn't necessarily be thinking that signing one would rule out the other. The question then becomes about how many of the current midfielders that would have, could be moved out.
El Mizouni would have had a good chance of coming back & playing here had we not been promoted, but he probably has to step up to League 1 regular now, & I could see Humphreys getting a similar loan at a promotion chasing side in that Division too.
Ball has proven himself at Championship level, so I'd expect he'll be part of the squad, as of course has Morsi.
Due to the lost season with injury, it's hard to see Panutche Camara getting a game at a higher level that he's been used to & It's possible that Evans could find himself surplus to requirements too, despite a great period last season.
We saw how necessarily ruthless McKenna, Ashton & the new owners can be, when the chance of bringing in better players came along, so I would be expecting more of the same this season, with the club having an eye of those who can get us up & even be Premier League players.
Rakeem Harper will be sold of course.

Oooo what a surprise, Posh now talking up Taylor… let the haggling begin , unless we decide to look elsewhere now .

I'd be off loading Ball out of our MF

If we want to do well in the Championship, we need to be looking at lower Prem players. Plenty of "hidden gems" in lower leagues that are exceptions to that, but not sure Taylor is all that at this new level for the price. We bought up Championship/ Prem players to help with the push to promotion and look how that's turned out. I think we need to set our heights higher.
If KM thinks he is or can be in time, then I'll support him until he says otherwise.

Fry at it yet again. I certainly wouldn't buy a car from him.

When/if we made offers for Taylor, it was before we knew the impact Massimo would have on the team, so our interest now could be zero.

El Mizouni & Harper plus £1.75m.
Humphreys on loan for the season if they want more.
Maybe even start at the 2 players & £1.5m, Mr Ashton loves trading.

The championship season is physically harder than L1 and Sam and Mass are not getting younger. We absolutely need cover for them. So who is that? Not Rakeem. Could be Dom Ball but he's been injury prone as has LE and PC. Cam H is more of a central MF talent and we still don't know if he's (yet) physical enough. El Miz could be a surprise package but I'd be surprised if we don't loan him out at least for half a season. Add it all up and we absolutely need talent in MF and suspect it'll be someone of Taylor's age who KMcK thinks he can coach to EPL standard. Taylor gonna be a strong candidate imo.

Wild card. Am old enough to have witnessed the initial impact Arnold had… is there an offshore talent who wants to join the project? And all evidence suggests we can't succeed with home talent alone..???

Taylor should be worth significantly less a year on.

PhuketPete The problem is that when you have a settled side you are buying to replace the established players. It's a bit harsh, but it is a professional team, not just a group of friends. Most players coming in will at least want a guaranteed start in the first match or understand that the plan is for them to get a certain proportion of minutes. Ideally, the back up players are younger and know that they will have to earn their place in the team.
I like the idea of some Dutch players who have to get up to speed with the league coming in as squad players looking to claim a starting place.

I like Len Brennan and RUnner's comments. if we want this lad we need to think about a MF with Massimo, Morsy, Camara and Taylor in it which one assumes would be the top 4. So using Can (Loan), Harper Evans Ball etc etc as makeweights and keeping those four top plus 1-2 cover for injuries is the maximum we would want.
Ashton knows his onions, and he will have a plan in mind, I expected nothing less than this usual Peterborough bullsh*t this time of the year, they do love to talk about our business don't they!! But Taylor is a good player, and KM would make him better too

I'm not sure Taylor would cut it in the Championship. I'd leave him at Posh and move on to someone who has played at Championship level for a few seasons and knows all about it.

If McKenna thinks Taylor is good enough for the championship that's good enough for me. We need another top class midfielder now that we are in the championship. Ball, Evans and Camara all have one thing in common they are injured quite a lot and even when fully fit can only be considered as squad players at best. Wouldn't be surprised if one of either Ball or Evans is sold and Camara if he's ever fit going out on loan.
