Jackson: We've Been Robbed
Saturday, 6th Jan 2024 23:10

AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson felt his side were hard done by following their 3-1 FA Cup defeat to the Blues at Plough Lane and was particularly unhappy with Harry Pell’s red card.

The Blues progressed to the fourth round for the second year running, the first time they have made it to that stage of the competition in successive seasons since 2010.

However, Jackson was delighted with his team’s display, believing they deserved better for their performance.

“To a man we were brilliant,” he told his club’s website. “It was a magnificent performance, we’ve gone toe to toe with a top Championship team.

“They’re a really good side with good players and I think we had it with them. Up until they got the third goal we were going for it – we competed even when we were down to 10.

“Ipswich will know they’ve been in a game today. We’re out the cup and that’s disappointing but I think we’ve been hard done by, I’m not sure the boys got entirely what they deserve.”

The Dons were reduced to 10 men in the 59th minute when Pell was dismissed for a second bookable offence having caught George Edmundson with a flailing arm.

“I don’t feel it was a red card at all,” Jackson insisted. “Harry Pell’s eyes don’t move from the ball. When you’re jumping for a header you have to use your arms to get off the ground.

“He’s caught their guy with an arm. He hasn’t swung his elbow in there, he was just trying to compete.

“It made things even more difficult for us against a top team but we still kept going and forced their keeper into some saves. We did our best to stay in the game, I can’t ask any more of the players, we’ve been robbed.”

I wouldn't say 20 shots to 9 shots is a "we've been robbed" situation.

If we had ended the game 3-1 and had 30% possession with 4 shots versus their 20 shots.....that's a "we've been robbed" situation.

I'll agree with him on the second yellow. Ridiculous decision.

Maybe it's not a red in League Two but was absolutely a second yellow offence, harsh as it may have been

I did wonder if the ref would try and even it out with Axel or Harness

Let's be honest, we were incredibly wasteful, we should have buried them frankly

That doesn't mean they didn't try and make it hard for us and actually do a good job at times but to say they deserved anything out of that is generous to say the least

I knew their big number 8 was gonna get sent off. That early yellow and the fact that he was a lanky old lump, he was never gonna go the 90 without another incident.

I have to say it was one of the most relaxing games to go to. Never felt like we were gonna have any problems after the first goal went in. Just managed the game from there. Old school with the keeper kicking it long all game. Never interested in playing it out from the back.

Johnnie Jackson bless him, just trying to keep the Womble fans fired up and believing in the team.

Great day out though, and enjoyed the trip to the Cherry Red Stadium!

I thought that the club kitty or the tea trolley had been stolen when I read the headline.

I thought they gave a creditable performance for a L2 side. We got a potentially trick job done and that’s about all I can say aside except huge kudos to Fridge and Cam for the way they’re coming into the side. Cam in particular showed his undoubted skills but now also looks so much more solid and versatile. But otherwise at times I thought we were rather sloppy and despite 20 chances, showed only glimpses of the fluidity of the earlier games this season, probably due to missing GH up front. Which brings me to Freddie.. I’ve always liked him as a bloke but as ever he always seems to be in the wrong place or half a yard off or behind the defender. Perhaps because of this he gets half chances instead of real ones and seldom looks like a threat. If this was his last chance he blew it. Not chasing that dead ball into the corner about summed it up.

If you read the report again his comments are reasonable enough (with the exception of the last sentence). Wimbledon scored 21 goals in December and his comments are just what a fanbase needs to hear to keep the momentum going. Fair play to him and Wimbledon.

if town supporters are happy with that performance then they are prepared for the down turn/

So if it was never a red, by his own logic, it was never a penalty!

Not a yellow card and, therefore, not a red card in my opinion. Players have to be allowed to compete and as long as it is not intentional or dangerous that’s ok with me. This was an accident, nothing worse!

Town were better and deserved the win. The second yellow looked more accidental to me, but that’s football

Definitely a second yellow in my eyes. You need a basic sense of awareness before you go swinging your arms about recklessly like that. He clobbered Edmundson.

I never felt at any point in the game that town were not going to win. It was a comfortable game and should have been a bigger margin. A non intentional handball is a penalty and a non intentional slap in the face is a yellow card. That's the rules.

The arm in the face may not have been deliberate but it still deserved a yellow card because it was dangerous play. For me Wimbledon's penalty was more questionable. I think the ball only hit Taylor's arm because the Wimbledon player jumped into him and the ball was going out of play anyway.

Wimbledon do deserve credit for their performance though, they worked their socks off and created some scoring opportunities but, even though we were nowhere near our best, with better finishing we could have scored five or six.

Has he actually watched it back? I saw it on Bet365 app where there was no commentary. I didn't know he had already been booked. Even if he hadn't, still looked deliberate to me and a probable red. He's already in the air when he moves his arm.

Chepstowblue. What? It was a stonewall yellow card. You cannot lead with ur arm into an opponents face. And Tuanzebe got booked for less than that. So how can u say it was ridiculous?

Watch the Newport/Eastleigh highlights. Similar incident -straight red - 3 match ban. Please appeal it Jackson if you feel that strongly about it. it could be upgraded to straight red and a three match ban. Although I’m not sure you can appeal a yellow. Having said that I thought Wimbledon gave a good account of themselves. A good hard fought cup tie. I’m glad we got through that one and hopefully no serious injuries.
