Town Gallagher Interest "Significant"
Thursday, 28th Mar 2024 15:17

Blackburn’s director of football Gregg Broughton says there was “significant interest” from the Blues in striker Sam Gallagher during the January transfer window.

As TWTD reported at the time, Town had offers up to £1.5 million turned down with Rovers, who they face at Ewood Park on Good Friday, initially appearing not unwilling to do a deal before ultimately opting against selling.

Gallagher, 28, Blackburn’s highest-paid player, was understood to be keen on the switch. His contract at Ewood Park is up this summer but with a new deal on the table.

The Blues eventually resigned former striker Kieffer Moore on loan from AFC Bournemouth on deadline day and the Wales international has netted six goals in nine starts and one sub appearance.

“There was significant interest from Ipswich Town amongst others for Sam Gallagher in January,” Broughton told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“That's no surprise, their main centre-forward, George Hirst, was injured and using the same metrics we used to identify George for us last summer, we know the best alternative for them to sign on the market was Sam Gallagher.

“My recommendation to the board was very clear. To sign a replacement for Sam would have been a significant cost in January and not one I felt we would be able to invest in.

“You're able to do a lot more creative business in the summer. We have to come to a decision with Sam, not on behalf of him, to work out what his future looks like.

“We have an open dialogue with the player and his representatives over what that might be. There is an offer on the table for him to sign a brand new deal.”

As it always seem to be these days, we’re the big winners here.

Equal or better option found in Kieffer.

If we still want Gallagher, he’ll be free in the summer.

Basket case Blackburn blew their big pay day out of fear of relegation.

Old news, and he isn't required any Moore.

"Best alternative for them to sign was Sam gallagher"? Incorrect, Moore is twice the player.

Chris he is not out of contract in the summer as we have a year's option on him until 2025. So until you know facts it's best to concentrate on Ipswich.

If we do make it to the promised land,I'd imagine we will be looking for an upgrade on Gallagher.
If we find ourselves still in the championship,we may well go back in for him in the summer, and get him on a free transfer.

We were looking for 2 strikers in January, with Scarlett & Ladapo gone as well as us losing Hirst through injury, so I don't think it was a straight choice of Gallagher or Moore; it was likely a wish for getting both.
Al Hamadi was probably the big winner in the Blackburn decision not to sell, and hopefully he'll prove to be an even better investment for Ipswich over the next few years.

Cambsrover14 - no club in its right mind triggers an extension against the player's wishes - the extension clause secures a fee at the cost of his inflated wages (over 600K per year). By the summer Rovers will have paid a £300K fee to keep him. With Rovers' form his market value will be steadily decreasing and if relegated he'll practically go on a free.

Whatever the conversations were, I’m very happy indeed we managed to get Big Kieffer back.
Promotion or not, I hope a deal can be done to secure him for next season.

I’ve been totally amazed at the player Keiffer Moore has become since his time with us. He works so hard, holds the ball up and scores some very fine goals for us too.

If we can't sign Moore permanently in the summer, then I would be hopefully of us getting Gallagher in. If we are in the Premier League, then maybe not, but if still in the Championship, I wouldn't say no.

Think we should make Kieffer our number one priority in the summer - whatever league we're in - the guy has been a revelation.

Think we got a much better player, certainly more prolific 1 in 5 for Gallagher 1 in 3 for more. Enough said!

who we sign next season will depend on what league we are in. I don't think people realise what a huge golf in class there is when you get promoted.
