Things are Looking Dark at the Moment - Notes for Bristol City
at 10:21:06

Good read thanks Harry, so a 3-5-2 system! Oh I hope they stick with that and our wingers have a field day...

I'm going for a positive 4-0 here to kick start a good run!

McCarthy Expected Barnsley and Blackpool to Be Tough
at 09:10:26

This is the stock standard response to a home draw against a team that is clearly struggling.

The team is set up to counter the threat from the opposition which is MM's instruction. I fail to see where we take the initiative in these games and take the match to the opposition, the odd point here and there is well enough but if we finish in roughly the same position as we have over the previous three or four years where is the progress?

I firmly believe that we have a squad capable of taking the game to the middle and lower placed teams in the championship and making a fist of clashes against the top 6!

But I am getting tired of the excuses and spin, "our squad isn't very big", "we are better than we were under Jewell/Keane", "the team spirit is great!"

No, we have just brought in another pony central midfielder to play out of position in a flat 4 that will do nothing than strangle the middle of the pitch! There is no attacking intent or creativity and we have square pegs in round holes again, just as we had with Jewell.

Are English Football Clubs Becoming Just Global Consumer Brands (And What Are the Implications)?
at 16:10:30

That's a very interesting blog, I enjoyed that but it is clear evidence that football - particularly in this country is in dire need to chase the almighty dollar (so to speak).

The importance of money has very quickly overtaken the historical significance within these clubs, who started this mad scramble? Could it be Sky or perhaps UEFA's revitalised Champions League, or maybe the Bosman ruling??

What is clear is that the fan is losing the game, the importance of the FA Cup has been devalued...what next?

Good blog though giving food for thought!

“A Bright New Future”
at 10:41:51

Time and not change is what we require. We are not the force we once were and are a very normal Championship and, dare I say it League One outfit.

With the new FFP rules coming into effect it is important that we stabilise what has been an extremely rocky patch over the past few years. The risk of spending to reach the Premier League hasn't paid off and we now need a pragmatic approach.

Although Mick isn't everyone's cup of tea, he is at least pragmatic which we have witnessed ever since he took over from Jewell.

What we need now is for Mick to carry on laying the foundations that we can hope to build on using the category 1 academy to bolster the ranks in the coming years (exactly as Man Utd did...)

By replacing the manager now creates yet another merry go round of players coming in and out of the club using money we haven't got and building more debt we can ill afford.

The Birth of the German Masterplan
at 22:52:59

budgieplucker -- exactly, have a thumb!

You have hit the nail on the head and that is why we love the game so much. If everyone played the same it would be dull. The Spanish revival will come to an end just as the German one will, that is the nature of the game but only by being progressive will you manage to replace them. My own personal view is that of 'OK Barca have pushed the boundaries, what next...'

I would dearly love Town to be the next progressive club - you never know we might just be that but in order to challenge and feed from the top table we simply can't keep doing the same thing over and over again.

Did Einstein not say that the definition of madness was to do the same thing over again yet expecting different results each time?

Its not a case of over analysing though, as a coach that is the game of football - as a fan its slightly different. I believe that there is a style, method - call it what you will that incorporates the strength of the English game yet will be open to other cultural influences that will place English football at the top of the pile again.

Can you imagine the pace of English football with the awareness of the Spanish game and discipline of German football?

A Rumbling in the Northern Regions
at 09:31:42

bluefeast - thanks for your comments however comparison wasn't the primary point of the article, it was discussed yes but the point of the article was the results of different coaching techniques following on from a previous blog. Comparisons can always be drawn between any club. Partick faced financial problems, as have we - Partick have languished in the second tier of their national league, as have we...

I could just as easily used Swansea as an example but I had previously focussed on Michel Bruyninckx which is where the link to Partick comes from.

Yes the quality of football is poor compared to England, but then this is relative isn't it? The quality of football in England is generally poor in comparison to say Germany or Spain. My belief remains though that we could deviate from the norm, be a little more innovative and create momentum that would bring a little bit of 'colour' and success to the club

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

Mike, you are correct and there were opportunities throughout where the statistics would have weighed heavily in our favour (particularly in the area Lee Martin was operating) however the trend in both halves remained the same, we are simply not set up to stamp our control on the game. This vast majority of loaness have arrived with serious lack of match fitness which is a factor but ultimately this is the responsibility of the coaching staff as is the way we are set up. It's pointless being controlled for 10 minutes here and 20 minutes there, if Cardiff had turned up I would have feared the worst.

Whymark, I agree I miss SE1's blogs!

Cheick One For The Future

One for the future yet given a one year contract, the very nature of our recent ability to convert short contracts into longer deals is a worry!

Maybe he was brought in to bolster the U21 ranks after all...
