Well there you go, having attended defeat after demoralising defeat last season I had vowed to take a little break from all things football for a while...then my son gave me a call 'fancy going to the match Dad, my treat?' How can you say no to that, but on the trip down we had both surmised that after an excellent start this one would be close but ultimately a defeat to a handy Brentford side.

After the first 5 minutes those same feelings of dread were rising, the Brentford fans were in fine voice and we were silent...the nerves simply bled down from the stands.

But then this was different, yes we were under pressure but we didn't appear nervous, or stressed, or panicky as we had in the past. It was like Ali on the ropes against Foreman...happy to sit back taking punches. Meanwhile, a very ineffective Brentford went about their business of running around in circles and falling over!

Then Freddie took off down the left and the Brentford defence flapped. Hello, this is different! As the game went on, Skuse appeared as did Ward. Spence looked as composed as any CB I've seen at the top level and after an initial nervy start, Kenlock grew and grew. Pessimism turned to faint hope then turned to manic delight as Skuse burst through the midfield before throwing his arms up realising he had ventured so far forward (I willed he 2nd half shot to hit the net)...allowing Didz to take over...

It was a clear foul and amongst my protestations to a referee who was clearly waving play on...I missed Waghorn tucking the ball into the corner...

Breathless at half time but even better, Nodge were losing and with Cardiff and Wolves drawing for an all to brief moment we were perched at the pinnacle!

Half number 2, why am I more nervous with a 1-0 lead?? I had expected that Brentford would come out and really put us under pressure. Hell no, at one point I thought every attack would finish with a Town goal and then there was Garner...2-0!

We had them in our pocket now and no fancy moves could bring them back into this game. I've heard the experts and read the reports but in all honesty I was incredibly disappointed with Brentford. The final ball was poor and the gamesmanship was La Liga-esque!!

A well deserved win, by forcing Brentford out wide and preventing any movement in the middle we suffocated them and they had neither the wit nor the will to do anything about it - luck had nothing to do with this win.

So who stood out? Well all of them...Knudsen and Skuse were at every ball, closing down brilliantly. Ward has started to come into his own. Kenlock and Spence are real prospects and Iorfa (for such a tall lad) is incredibly nimble with good feet (nice lad too, had a brief chat with him by the side of the pitch).

Sears ran himself into the ground although disappeared in the 2nd half, Didz can tackle now and put a real shift in. Waghorn - what a unit but what a fantastic signing! Garner, quickly becoming my favourite, looks like he could start a fight in an empty room and gave the Brentford defence real problems.

Final whistle went and for the players you would be mistaken for thinking they had just won the Champions League...there is a togetherness that isn't forced here. A blend of experience and youth, of young players that aren't burdened down with the troubles and woes of long disappointing seasons - they appear excited at the prospect and the older pro's are rolling with it!

Mick and his coaching team have to take credit for much of this, as do the club with the change in philosophy but then so do the fans. We could have sat back and quietly accepted our lot but the club now know what we perceive to be success, even with such limited resources and the last two seasons fell well short.

Who knows how long this will last, but let's take each game as it comes!
