Things I miss at the footer ...
at 16:56 13 Feb 2024

The tune is 'La Cucaracha'

I found out the story behind this a couple of years ago...A lady called Sheila spoke on Radio Suffolk and said that the horn was actually sounded by her brother who watched the games from his wheelchair. He had Motor Neurone Disease and because he was unable to clap or cheers the goals, he would sound his air horn attached to his wheelchair when we scored...

A question for the older supporters....
at 19:47 12 Nov 2023

Toilet, Chips, Chinese and Indian...

That was a rare chant by a group who would come into the back of the old North Stand about five minutes before kick off and push everyone forward whilst doing that chant.

One of them looked like Richard Dreyfuss's character in Jaws, and the youngest looking member of the group had a resemblance of Paul Gascoigne about him. They held him up when we played Newcastle, and they sung "we've got Gascoigne, we've got Gascoigne, you ain't, you ain't....."

Ok, cheers Phil. Certainly makes me feel bad for charging the prices I have done up to today. They could have waited as few more weeks lol.

Ah, I see. Strange how they have done it so quickly. When I published the book through them, I could obviously see their what their print costs are, and then they set their minimum amount that you have to list the book for so they make their cut, before you even consider any royalties on top of that. Unless they have since found a company to print the book for a lot less, they are now making a loss on this.

I had no idea about this. This has certainly not been reduced by me - it has only been out for less than two weeks. This is something Amazon have done. Anyone know how/why they would do this?

I can only offer apologies to those that have already bought the book at the original cost - but totally out of my control I'm afraid.

Superb. I've asked a few people about him but nobody can remember him.

Last time I saw him was many years ago on the pier at Walton on the Naze. He was on the ghost train. If you ever saw that, you'd know that in the middle, the car would come down a slope then go up a slope.

I heard a bloke screaming as a car did that manoeuvre. When I looked to see what was going on, it was McKenzie hanging out the car screaming and shouting. Suffice to say, he was well and truly high on something or other.

70s and 80s lost football songs
at 22:54 9 Nov 2022

My first ever trip to Carrow Rd was that game in 89. So yes, the whistle probably made its debut that game.

For home games, it would be blown for the first time just before kick off, just after the Haverhill lot would do their toilet, chips, Chinese and indian chant

5 blows of the whistle, followed by 4 claps and everyone shouting 'Ipswich' always got everyone involved.

On another note for that era, does anyone remember a character called McKenzie? Never knew his first name, I think he was from Manningtree and he had his own song as a fair number would sing McKenzie is a w**ker to him. A bit of a nutcase.

Regarding the North Stand whistle. That was me lol. The whistle got sent to Coventry - almost literally. I was at their old Highfield Road ground - a 2-2 draw in December 1992. We were 2-1 down and then Steve Whitton equalised from the penalty spot. We celebrated wildly on the terrace and the contents of my pocket emptied including my wallet with my train ticket home in it, and the whistle. Luckily the guy in front of me found my wallet (although it took some persuading for him to believe it was mine as when he said who's lost a wallet, about 10 blokes all answered 'me' at once), but we just couldn't find the whistle and it was never seen again. It must have been strange for Town fans to hear it when we scored our first that afternoon, but not for the second.

What is our record for live televised games in a season
at 11:38 20 Oct 2022

Thank you, Steve. The book was finished in May and was expected to be out for the start of this season. That it is only came out on 12 September and in time for Christmas is down to the publisher's processes.

Our win record in live games is not far off 1 in 3 which is not too bad. 3 wins in the last 36 makes it look a lot worse too.

Going back to the 1980/81 season, it is criminal that none of our UEFA Cup ties were screened live, especially, the two-legged final. When I think of some of the players of that era who never played in a live game for us, it's unbelievable that their skills were not showcased in everyone's homes for such a great side.

Yes I did admit in my column to shedding a tear in relation to Kevin Beattie's funeral. Is that so wrong?

John Duncan's Ipswich

Same here. During the summer it was released, Mick McNeil's shop in Clacton had both the home and away shirt on display in the window for two or three weeks. I had just started my first job then and every lunchtime, I walked past the window looking at them waiting until I got my first pay packet. Once that arrived, I then bought them both.

I recorded the goals from this game a few years ago onto my phone from an old video played on a TV and put them on youtube. Not the greatest quality窶ヲ..
