Why wasn't Bishop in the squad yesterday?
at 09:17 16 Feb 2017

It’s ever so easy for fans to take Mick’s comments about Teddy Bishop and assume that his work ethic and attitude are at the root. This seems to be what Mick was getting at in his press conference yesterday.

However, word around the training ground suggests Mick’s own attitude to the midfielder has little if anything to do with his fitness, or how hard or how well he has been training, and more to do with the fact that he has somehow managed to needle his manager. Apparently Bishop is by nature very quiet — even shy — and this can sometimes be seen as him as being aloof, and not bothered. To be fair, none of us are going to ever know what’s really been going on, but I can well imagine that once Mick makes his mind up about someone, there’s not a lot they or anyone else can do to change it.

I read an interesting comment attached to twtd’s original story — that Mick was quick to praise Rowe after the under 23’s game against Watford, but did not once mention Bishop’s own performance. I was at the game, and Bishop was outstanding and worked tirelessly for the full 90 minutes. This makes me wonder if there is a clash of personalities here?

I do have sympathy for Bishop. Maybe I'm wrong and Mick was genuinely trying to fire him up, but his comments yesterday and all the ensuing speculation will have done little to boost the lad’s confidence, already depleted by a string of injuries. We can only hope that it doesn’t have the same effect on him that all the negativity and abuse has undoubtedly had on Douglas.
