It was - it stayed there for much longer than expected. I had some photos of it somewhere - but long since lost. I wondered if anyone would remember it !
When i was a teenager (over 40 years ago) a group of us were at a friends house when his dad came back from the pub, fairly hammered. He then proceeded to give this passionate, very left wing, speech which totally encapsulated us. Our reaction was to immediately drive to Tuddenham Road and paint the above on the bridge near the hockey place. It remained there for years, relatively untouched, and in it's incorrectly spelt format.
I very rarely post on here, but having seen someone go through a very similar experience to you at close hand, want to verbally underline everything said above. If there's one thing that will help you and your children more than anything its the knowledge that you are acting with restrained dignity at all times.
And also important, again as stated above, is keeping records of everything that is exchanged between you and anyone involved, screenshots too of anything detrimental posted on line.
Good luck, and always talk to those you trust when you need to.
I was at the Villa league game - a great night - I can remember climbing to the top of the fence at the front of the away section a the final whistle - whilst home fans starting to rush in a cause a few fights. I too missed the semi-final - having been to most of the games that season, i had to attend my grandparents silver bleedin wedding celebrations, in Dartford. It's the sort of thing you couldn't get out of in my family... All day people said "I thought you'd be at the game today" grrrr
I expect the trip was much more arduous then, but you're right, the general fanbase was much lower - such a different social environment - including hooliganism.
I was at a sweet spot age then - earning enough on my paper round to afford to get to games, but too young to feel too threatened by those wanting to beat you up (with knives beginning to make more of an appearance then). Saying that, although i went on the coaches alone, I'd often pretend to be with other 'parent-like' people to avoid being smacked !
I remember being at Ayresome Park that day, stuck in the open terracing in one of the corners I believe. Part of that (fading) memory is that there weren't really many Town fans there, considering the magnitude of the game. No more than a few hundred ? Have I got that right - 'cos on today's standards, we'd have had thousands !
Lord knows if this will work, but it's Slippery People for me - just love it.
I remember people applauding the film when I first watched it in the 80's - everyone felt a bit odd for doing so in a cinema - but felt you couldn't simply get up, and quietly walk out !
Oddly, this game prompts a memory for me. The awful experience of the game, followed by dreadful traffic on a lovely sunny day, was not diminished whe we saw Jamie Clapham, also in a Range Rover. JC gave smiley thumbs up to my son. I think he scored our goal and in my young son's mind, seeing the goal scorer and getting a 'thumbs up' totally eclipsed the football misery. I was still entrenched in the misery of the game.
I can guarantee that the Norwich home game, which I'm probably looking forward to more than any other, will clash with the one week I can't get to PR - being 19th to 26th Sept.
DESFILE DE LLAMADAS 2023 is what you want - two days of home-spun carnaval. Just wander down to the Isla des Flores (think that's what it's called) where the procession takes place early in the day and buy a ticket to sit near the front - front row ideally, from one of the locals. Or, just watch for free standing a few feet behind the rows of seats. Two memorable nights spent watching this spectacle. Then just drive around the country admiring a cool lifestyle - the gauchos really are living the dream ........
Would strongly suggest going into Uruguay - especially if you want to see somewhere unspoilt by tourism. And the Carnaval (mid Feb) in Montevideo is fantastic !
Has anyone highlights of the 4-0 win back in the early 80's - never been able to find anything on youtube. Apparently there were a couple of contenders for goal of the season - at least one from Eric Gates.......
